Assassin's Creed Film Review
The worst thing that can be said about any film is that it's forgettable and for alot of bad video game movies that's exactly what they are alot of the time. While yes granted you get some that are so bad it's hard to forget about them that is something that absolutely cannot be said for the film that i'm going to be talking to you all about today as it's just a bad film that is also a really forgettable film that alot of us had forgotten was even a thing in the first place and so then join me as I review the film that let's be honest here we all forget about even being a thing in the first place with the film in question being called simply just "Assassin's Creed" enjoy.
The plot of this film is when a group people known as the Templars plan to steal something called the Apple of Eden it's up to an organization of assassin's to stop them before it's far to late. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that good. As to be frank much like alot of things with this film the plot to this film was pretty bad as it has nothing to do with the Assassin's Creed franchise outside of borrowing the name of the machine that's used to transplant the hero of the film Cal into his ancestors body and that the assassin's and templars have been feuding for decades and that's really as this is a plot that could be the plot to any action film and it would work just as well as it's that boring , that bland and that generic of plot with there being nothing in this film from a plot point of view that makes it feel like that it belongs in that world and whereas the Prince Of Persia movie pretty much had to make up a plot because of the fact that the source material basically had no plot to speak of whatsoever with this film it's really the opposite that's true as the all of the games back from when they were actually good were rich with plot and so the makers of this film could have chosen to use plot elements from any of the games and it still would have worked but they instead chose to create a whole new plot for literally no reason whatsoever with the plot of this film also being not really rather entertaining and nor is it really rather engaging either in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is this films producer Michael Fassbender as Callum "Cal" Lynch and Aguilar De Nerha. Also starring in this film is Marion Cotillard as Dr. Sofia Rikkin , Brendan Gleeson as Joseph Lynch , Charlotte Rampling as Ellen Kaye , Michael K. Williams as Moussa , Denis Ménochet as McGowen , Essie Davis as Mary Lynch , Ariane Labed as María , Carlos Bardem as Benedicto , Khalid Abdalla as Sultan Muhammad XII , Javier Gutiérrez as Tomás De Torquemada , Hovik Keuchkerian as Ojeda , Matias Varela as Emir , Callum Turner as Nathan , Michelle H. Lin as Lin and Jeremy Irons as Alan Rikkin.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. With it being fair to say that this films acting is one of the more better aspects of this film and even then that's not really saying all that much due to how bad alot of the other aspects of the film including it's acting is it's just that this films acting is one of the least bad things in it as while every single actor that's in this film is horribly miscast almost to the point where it's laughable at how bad the casting for this film really was you can still tell that the actors in this film are still trying to turn in a good performance with it being being made perfectly clear that this films director Justin Kurzel really does have no idea how to direct his actors as by all rights this film should have some really good acting in it but even good actors still need direction to help them out and that's something that's sorely lacking in this film with there not even being a good actor in this film which again is not the fault of the actors but rather it's the fault of the director for not giving them the direction that they so sorely needed as even Jeremy Irons who is someone that you can usually depend upon to turn in a good performance here just feels wasted and underused alot of the time with both Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard just feeling lost and unsure of themselves all of the time with the acting that's in this film not really being helped by the fact that the script for this film is just so bad as it gives none of this films actors absolutely nothing to work with interms of what it is that there actual characters personalities are even meant to be in the first place which is something that really does harm the overall quality of the acting that's on this very film.
Doing the CGI for this film is Double Negative , Cinesite , One Of Us , Hybride Technologies , Image Engine Design , Raynault VFX , Rodeo FX , Vitality Visual Effects , Peerless Camera Company , Milk Visual Effects , Dazzle Pictures , Atomic Arts and Blue Spill. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad however much like the rest of this film this films CGI wasn't all that good either with it seeming like that the moto for this film was "let's just use CGI at every chance we get" as there is alot of CGI to be found in this film and alot of it is in scenes where it's not needed as they have a fully computer animated shot of both Aguilar and Maria climbing up the side of a church when that's not needed as you very easily could have just got a real shot of a church in Spain and then added on CGI doubles of the characters or just had there stunt doubles to the climb from a certain bit on the building and that's it and while yes this film does use CGI in places where it really needed to like for example the machine that Cal has to use to transplant himself in his ancestors body becomes fully CGI when it starts moving around and that's great as that's something that you couldn't possibly do in CGI but for whatever reason the makers of this film chose to use CGI even in scenes where they really didn't need to all because of the fact that they could and they did it so often that they didn't stop to think if they should because all it does is make this live action film suddenly look like an animated film with the CGI not being bad alot of the time but the times where it is really doesn't help the film out neither does the fact that even tho this film is nine years old it's CGI looks to be really dated.
If films like The Super Mario Bros Movie and Sonic The Hedgehog are films that we get when you hire people that are actually fans of the source material then surely this film and even Mortal Kombat: Annihilation are the kinds of films that you get when the people involved are clearly not fans of the source material. As while Mortal Kombat: Annihilation is one of the most well known films for being so bad it's good it doesn't change the fact that it's still a bad film that doesn't respect either the film that came before it or the source material with the same thing being true for this film as well as this film doesn't even feel like an Assassin's Creed movie it instead feels like someone in Hollywood saw that video game movies where being made and wanted to make one with a popular IP which given that the Assassin's Creed games were doing well back in 2016 it made them the obvious go to choice only the makers of this film stripped the film of anything and everything that made the games standout and only did the bare minimum to keep them connected to the games and that's really it and yet movies like The Super Mario Bros Movie and Sonic The Hedgehog while yes they did come out after this film are still good examples of what happens when you listen to the fans and give them exactly what they not only want to also expect in the film versions of those games and heck even the Prince Of Persia movie at least tried to be like the games here tho there's none of that as it feels like everyone involved in making this film wasn't making it because they loved the games but rather because of the fact that they wanted a pay check and that's really it.
While there are alot and I really do mean alot of really bad things to say about this film there are alot some small positive things to say about it as well. Like the fact that even tho the plot of this film is really generic you do have to give the makers of this film at the very least some form of credit for trying to come up with an original story granted it's not that works well in the world of Assassin's Creed and also highlights the fact that the makers of this film weren't fans of the franchise to begin with it does also show that there is some level of creativity put into the film and that is something that cannot by denied much like the fact that the music for this film is decent ay best with the film being scored by the directors Jed Kurzel with it making sense as to why this films music is as good as it is as Jed is himself a musician and a singer and songwriter so he does know how to make music and given the fact that he would score several films even as recently as this year it is fair to say that he is a mildly successful film composer with it not really being hard to see why as while yes granted the music for this film isn't as good as it really good have been as the music makes no attempt to create mood or tension when it does standout then it is something that is worth talking about but with that being said this film is one that does have alot more negative things about it with those things more then overshadowing the more positive aspects of the film as they are things that just cannot be ignored but when the film does do something good it is something that should be mentioned due to the fact that it's a rare bit of sunshine and hope in a film that is just so bad.
Let's take a second to talk about the main villain of the film Alan Rikkin with him being a woefully underused character. With the character not really getting alot of screen time as even his daughter Dr. Sofia Rikkin gets more screen time then he does and she's not even meant to be the main villain of the film but little screen time that Alan does get does make the film a little bit more better to watch just because of the fact that Jeremy Irons is decent in this film and does play the character as well as can be expected given the overall quality of the film but with that being said he is still a character that can at times be sorely lacking as while he does have a clear end goal in mind that being steal the Apple Of Eden which is a device which he believes will allow him to control the free will of human kind and that is a decent plan to have and does feel like something that he would do as a character but there's still nothing really to him as a character as he's not that interesting of a character and due to the fact that the makers of this film choose not to have him be in more scenes in the film it does mean that we the audience have no reason to either care for or hate him as a character outside of the fact that the film tells us that he's the bad guy and that's it and heck we don't even seen him acting or even doing anything in the film which does make it hard to believe him as a villain whereas if you look at another Jeremy Irons villain in this case Scar then you'll get to see just what a good and well done villain looks like as Scar does have a clear end goal in mind and is featured on screen alot more then Alan with the makers of that film even taking the time to show us just how evil that he can be which does make it so much more easier to by into Scar as a main villain and yet here with Alan none of that happens.
Now then this film has b/ had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and fifty five minuets and thirty seconds. Which to be fair to this film is a pretty solid running time for this film to have but in saying that tho it's also far more longer then what a film like this one should have as this is the kind of film that should run for no longer then one hour and thirty minuets and the maximum but in saying that tho this film really does have just about the right amount of plot there to really cover that amount of running time in the first place even if it really doesn't use it's running time all that wisely in the first place due to the fact that it doesn't fully develop it's plot all that well so much so that at times it was hard to tell just what the main plot of the film was even meant to be in the first place as the film has scenes that add nothing to the plot of the film other then explaining more of Callum's backstory and that's really it and alot of the time that's screen time that could have been used to further develop the main plot of the film with the film not even taking the time to develop quite literally any of its characters as all of them come across as being very dimensional personality less planks of wood as again alot of the scenes tat could have been used to develop the characters alot more is instead spent on pointless scenes with Aguilar which while alot of those scenes are important to the films plot they also go on for far two long and that does eat up screen time that would have been far more better spent on developing both the main plot of the film and it's characters but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is an action film that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. However tho yet again much like everything else in this film this films action really isn't all that good either as there's nothing that really stands out in this film from an action point of view either with it feeling like that the makers of this film were just going through the motions and therefor didn't bother to make the action in an action film that's based off of an action video game be worth watching as alot of it is just dull and predictable which is something that does make it pointless in this film with there not really being any good action scene in this film as all of this films action is just very repetitive say what you will about the action in the both the Prince Of Persia film and in Mortal Kombat: Annihilation but those films have at the very least one action scene that you remember and that stands out because of it be it because it's really good or most likely because it's really bad but here tho much alot of this film all of this films action is just really bland , generic and at best just down right forgettable all of which are things that do come together in making what could have been a really action packed film with tons of great action scenes now seem like a really bad film when all the makers of this film had to do was give us ONE memorable action scene as that is something that would have made the film at the very least somewhat memorable in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall while many myself included will say that Mortal Kombat: Annihilation is the worst video game movie of all time this film surely has to be up there just due to the fact that it is so bland , boring and generic all of which are signs of a really bad film with Mortal Kombat: Annihilation having one thing over this film and that's the fact that you at least remember Mortal Kombat: Annihilation the same thing however cannot be said for this film as that's just how forgettable that this film really is in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 4.5 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from the official Mario fandom wiki page , the official Assassin's Creed fandom wiki page , IMP Awards . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images really from this very film being the really great the official Assassin's Creed fandom wiki page this is really because of the fact that really all of the images that I really indeed got and really used from the official Assassin's Creed fandom wiki page are all really high quality really with all of the images that really are all and of course really currently up and on the really great and the really solid the official Assassin's Creed fandom wiki page really are all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
