Deep Impact Film Review

Believe it or not there was once a time in the nineties were it seemed like the only type of film that was getting made was the disaster movie. With there being alot of disaster films being made all because of the fact that the makers of those films didn't have a story that was worth telling but because of the fact that they now had the computer effects to make those movies possible in the first place with one of the examples of this being the film that i'm going to be talking to you all about today and so then join me as I review the film that features Morgan Freeman as the president of America with the film in question being called simply just "Deep Impact" enjoy.

The plot of this film is when it's discovered that an Asteroid the size of New York City is heading straight towards Earth a few astronauts don't have long to try and stop it from colliding with Earth. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad as it was a plot that does treat it's audience with respect and like there smart but at the same time tho you don't go to a disaster movie you go to one of these movies wanting to be thrilled and by having a plot that's this dense it does make it hard to be entertained by the film when this is the kind of film that whilst it is great that they were as scientifically accurate as they could have been in regards to the films plot they also forgot to be the first thing that a movie should be and that's entertaining but in fairness to this film it does have a really strong plot that does get alot of focus alot of the time which is something that does make this films plot feel like it's one of the more better disaster movie plots out there but at the same time tho this film does take it self a bit two seriously as this is a plot that does allow itself to be a bit more fun and bit more goofy with this film not really taking as full advantage of that as it could have done which is something that does make this films plot be a bit hard to sit through with the plot of this film not really being really rather entertaining and nor is it really rather engaging either in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Starring in this film is Robert Duvall as Captain Spurgeon "Fish" Tanner and Ron Eldard as Commander Oren Monash. Also starring in this film is Jon Favreau as Dr. Gus Partenza , Aleksandr Baluev as Colonel Mikhail "Mick" Tulchinsky , Mary McCormack as Andrea "Andy" Baker , Blair Underwood as Mark Simon , Kimberly Huie as Wendy Mogel , Kurtwood Smith as Otis "Mitch" Hefter , James Cromwell as Alan Rittenhouse , O'Neal Compton as Morten Entriken , Francis X. McCarthy as General Scott , Téa Leoni as Jenny Lerner , Derek de Lint as Theo Van Sertema , Vanessa Redgrave as Robin Lerner , Maximilian Schell as Jason Lerner , Rya Kihlstedt as Chloe Lerner , Laura Innes as Beth Stanley , Mark Moses as Tim Urbanski , Dougray Scott as Eric Vennekor , Bruce Weitz as Stuart Caley , Elijah Wood as Leo Biederman , Charles Martin Smith as Marcus Wolf , Richard Schiff as Don Biederman , Betsy Brantley as Ellen Biederman , Leelee Sobieski as Sarah Hotchner , Denise Crosby as Vicky Hotchner , Gary Werntz as Chuck Hotchner , Jason Dohring as Jason Thurman , Mike O'Malley as Mike Perry and Morgan Freeman as Tom Beck.

Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With this films acting being shockingly really good as it's alot more better then what it really had any right to be with all pf this films actors giving us some truly heartbreaking performances all of which do suit there characters perfectly as all of this films characters would be emotional during alot of this film given what alot of them either have to give up or loose in the process and while the film very easily could have had some really bad acting in it as the plot of the film alone really doesn't allow for good acting the very fact that all of this films actors knew that they had to bring there A game in order to make this films plot work does show that they understood the material that was given to them and that all of them make the most of what was given to them to use in the first place with the best actor in this film being the terrific Morgan Freeman as he gives this truly heartbreaking speech not long after the attempt to deflect the asteroid fails where he basically condemns a huge number of the American population to possible death and yet you can see the sadness in his eyes as he knows that this is the absolutely last resort and it's one that he doesn't want to make but he has to make it ensure that some resemblance of the human race survives with the acting that's in this film really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so good that all this films actors have to do is just say the lines as they are written and a good performance will come out of them naturally which is something that really does help to raise the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.

Doing the CGI for this film is Industrial Light & Magic , Pacific Title Digital , CIS Hollywood and Pacific Title and Art Studio. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good with all of this films effects looking really good even almost thirty years later with this mainly being due to the fact that the makers of this film put alot of thought and effort into the films effects which is something that does make alot of sense as the main attraction for these kind of films has always been and will always be the films effects with it being made crystal clear that alot of this films budget went into making this films effects look as good as they could have dine and my god does it pay off as we get alot of scenes done fully in a computer that would be hard to do today let alone in 1997 when this film was being made with the best example pf this being when one half of the asteroid is seen going across a rive and you see the impact on the water that it leaves behind with that kind of effect being something that is barely done today due to how hard it is to emulate water in a computer and yet they were pulling it off really well in this movie and it's those kinds of effects that do make this movie stand out from all of the disaster films out as lot of them just use fire which yes is just as hard to do as water but with fire you know what it is that your going to be getting when something hits it whereas with water your going to be getting something different each and every time that it happens

While it's not unusual for there to be disaster movies with the exact theme just look at oth Dante's Peak and Volcano as proof of that. However we very rarely if ever got two of them not only released in the exact same year but just about a month apart from each other as was the case with both this film and Armageddon both of which came out in 1998 with this film being released on May 8th and Armageddon coming out on July 1st but while this film is more scientifically accurate it's Armageddon that many people consider to be the more entertaining film which does make sense when you take into account that that film was directed by Michael Bay and was co-written by J.J. Abrams however tho both films got very mixed reviews from critics and fans alike which is something that does make alot sense as both films were coming out on the tail end of the disaster film phase and yet at the same time they did still manage to make quite the amount of money at the box office with this film earning around $345.5 million American dollars against a budget of eighty million where as Armageddon earned around $553.7 million at the box office against a budget of one hundred and forty million dollars which is something that does make alot of sense as that film was basically made by Disney as it was released under there Touchstone Pictures studio and had some big names starring in it whereas here while both Paramount and Dreamworks today have the same staying power as Disney back in the nineties not so much as Dreamworks was a new company at the time and Paramount hadn't had a hit film in years so the fact that this film made a big profit at the box office against a small budget is still something that's to be congratulated.

In what could be seen as being a huge knock against the film is the fact that this film does have far two many main characters and plot lines to follow. As we have the plot with the kid who first discovered the asteroid Leo trying to his girlfriend and later wife Sarah to safety when all she wants to do is be with her parents and then we have the plot line with Jenny who just wants her dad to reconnect with her mom even tho he's already moved on gotten re-married and then you have the plot of the crew of the The Messiah as they have to plan out each and every thing that there trying to do to the asteroid in the first place which is in of it self tied into the plot with the President who is just trying to be the best person that he could possibly be in the first place with all of these plot lines being far to many for this film to have as it does make it hard to follow along with what's going on in the film as the film will cut away from certain characters for large portions of it's running time and then suddenly cut back to them by which point we the audience have already long forgotten where they are interms of there own personal plot line with the only thing that could have fixed this being if the film cut down on the amount of main characters that it had and heck you can see by all of the actors that were credited in this review that it has alot of characters and alot of those characters are main characters where as if the makers of this film just picked a few main characters and had the vast majority of the film focus on them then it would have gone a long way in making the film alot more easier to follow as we wouldn't be struggling to remember certain characters plot when the film does suddenly cut back to them.

The one thing that this film has other disaster movies that came out in the nineties it's the fact that they actually take the time to make you care about it's characters. With the film spending a good portion of it's running time just letting you get to know the characters and what there thinking and how there feeling about the fact that they could be wiped out and that is something that does make all the difference as it then means that when the film does get to those heart wrenching moments they hit home all the more because of the fact that we'd gotten to know them as people and not just as one dimensional characters and while yes alot of this films characters are still very one dimensional characters that doesn't change the fact that we do get to spend lot of time with these characters and it's this films characters that do help this film stand apart from films like Dante's Peak and Armageddon for example as in those films the focus was more on the effects and not on the characters and while that is still great as people did come to these movies for the effects it's the characters that make them memorable and because of the fact that we the audience do get to spent alot more time with the films characters when they do break down or when they do give an emotion speech it means something because of the fact that we know what it is that there going through just to go back to Morgan Freemans Tom character for a minuet his speech where he explains that eight hundred thousand Americans will be taken to these safe places while the rest can basically just die wouldn't hit the same if we hadn't spent alot of time with both him and Jenny before hand as it would seem out of left field but because we did spend that time with both characters and because both characters are acted really well in that moment it hits all the more harder and it makes what could have been seen as being a dark , boring and generic speech seem all the more upsetting and impactful because of it.

Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly two hours and one minuet and eleven seconds. Which is a pretty solid running time for this film to have as alot of these disaster films did also have very similar running times with this film even having the right amount of plot there to really cover that amount of running time in the first place however tho with that being said this film really doesn't use it's running time all that wisely as the plot of the film despite getting alot of focus it's not that well developed as the film has far two many characters in it that it really can't develop it's plot all that well as it has to keep on shifting the scene to one of it's other characters and therefor can't spend the time that it really does need to in order to develop it's plot with the same thing also being true for the films characters as even tho they get alot of attention none of them can be that well developed due to the fact that the film has so many characters in the first place with there only being two things that could fixed this issue the first of which being that the film got back to the script writing stage to cut down on the amount of main characters or the second thing being that the film have an extra twenty to thirty minuets added to it's running time as either one would allow for both the main plot of the film and it's characters to be alot more well developed then what they actually because as things stand neither can be that well developed due to the fact that the film does have quite alot of main characters when it really doesn't need to have as many characters as it presently has but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.

So now the as this is an action film that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. As even tho this film really only has two action scenes all throughout it it makes them count by having them mean something to either the plot of the film or the films characters and isn't just there for the sake of having an action scene in it which is something that this film very easily could have done by showing the crew of the Messiah making another attempt to destroy the asteroid before it gets to the earth which would make it seem dull and repetitive but by minimizing it to just two it means that both action scenes can be impactful even if they are both really short with the best action scene in the whole film being when one half of the asteroid hits flies across Earth and we get to see the kind of damage that it does as when it hits the lake that Jenny and her father are standing near we see it create a huge wave that not only whips them out but also goes across several states taking out anyone and anything in it's path which is something that does make it a really entertaining action scene in it's own right and while it would have been helped if we got to see the damage that it caused worldwide instead of just hearing about it as that would have made the asteroid attack on earth feel all the more impactful then what it already is but to this films credit both of it's action scenes are a pair of really good action scenes in their own in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Overall while this film isn't as good as it really could have been as it does have quite alot of faults in it it's still alot more better then what it really had any right to be as the film does take it's time to let get to know the characters and let us the audience form a connection with them and decide on if we like the or not with this being something that does show that the film did have the potential to be a really good film in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 7 out of 10 from me.

Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from IMP Awards . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images really from this very film being the really great Google Images this is really because of the fact that really all of the images that I really indeed got and really used from Google Images are all really high quality really with all of the images that really are all and of course really currently up and on the really great and the really solid Google Images really are all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
