Carry On Teacher Film Review
The Carry On films are a staple of British television with at least one of the films being played at least once every single bank holiday. With the film that i'm going to be talking to you all about today being one that's oddly well timed due to the fact that British school kids have just returned to school thus making this review one that's oddly really well timed and so then join me as I review the film that is basically a British version of Saved By The Bell with the film in question being called simply just "Carry On Teacher" enjoy.
The plot of this film is when a beloved Headmaster is offered a job at a new school all of the pupils try to make him look bad. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual lot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very fil was in all honesty really good. With this films plot bein one that's delightfully simple which is something that does work well for the Carry On films as that does allow them to hold them a candle up to what was then present day Britain with the same thing being true here for better or for worse as while the plot of this film is delightfully simple it's plot is also one that's not that strong as it does get hard to tell just what the plot of the film is even meant to be in the first place as the films plot does come and go as and when it pleases an barely gets alot of focus which is great one one respect as it does allow fr the film to focus more on it's gags then it does plot but that's also the problem as the plot of the film should always come first and while there are indeed some really positive things to say about this films plot there's not enough in the plot to make it one that's worth watching this is despite the fact that the plot of this film is also one that can at times be really enjoyable even if it does appear to be a really dated with how certain aspects of the plot do play out with that being said this is still a really good plot with the plot of this film being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Ted Ray as Mr William Wakefield , Kenneth Connor as Mr Gregory Adams and Charles Hawtrey as Mr Michael Bean. Also starring in this film is Leslie Phillips as Mr Alistair Grigg , Kenneth Williams as Mr Edwin Milton , Hattie Jacques as Miss Grace Short , Joan Sims as Miss Sarah Allcock , Rosalind Knight as Miss Felicity Wheeler , Cyril Chamberlain as Mr Alf Hodgson , Richard O'Sullivan as Robin Stevens , George Howell as Billy Haig , Roy Hines as Harry Bird , Diana Beevers as Penny Lee , Jacqueline Lewis as Pat Gordon , Carol White as Sheila Dale , Jane White as Irene Ambrose , Paul Cole as John Atkins , Larry Dann as A Pupil and Irene French as Monica.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting tat's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With this film having alot of really god acting in it something which is quite shocking and yet at the same time not that shocking either as while you don't usually expect nor even get alot of good acting in these early Carry On film this films actors are still a bunch of really good actors in their own right and have proven that not only in the other Carry On films but in other projects as well with there acting in this film being really good with all of this films actors turning in some really top notch performances that whilst they don't match up to what they would do in other Carry On films and projects it is still really good acting in it's own right with the best actor in the whole film being Kenneth Connor who outside of Ted Rey is one of the films main characters with him getting alot of screen time to really show us just what it is that he can really do as an actor and what we get is a performance that can be equally dramatic as it can be comedic something which does make Kenneth Connor look like a really versatile actor with the acting that's in this film really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so good that all this films actors have to do is just say the lines as they are written and a good performance will come out of them naturally which is something that really does help to raise the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
While this films characters aren't exactly the most memorable characters that the Carry On franchise has ever had. Which in all fairness to the film might be part of the point of the film as these characters are meant to be real people in that there meant to be people that we all know but in saying that tho none of the films characters be it the teachers or the students are written all that well with all of them being really plain characters which could to make us the audience see our selves in each and everyone of the characters which if that is the case then all that does s make the characters seem more bland and more forgettable then what they already are and while the characters might have faired a little bit better in the fifties when this film would have been at its most popular then like alot of aspects of the film really haven't aged all that well with all of them being characators or characters instead of being there own fully formed characters with all of the students not really having anything that makes them stand out from one another and while the teachers do fair a little bit better in this regard that's mainly due to who is playing them as really any of the actors that are playing the teachers could have played the others roles and nothing would need to be changed as all of the teachers are so interchangeable almost to the point where it makes you wonder where alot of the effort is going because it's clearly not going to any of the characters or into giving any of the characters anything that makes them stand out from all of the other characters with this being an odd thing as when the Carry On films get there characters right they really do get it right just look at films such as Carry On Screaming and Carry On Camping as proof of that but when they get it wrong may god do they get it wrong.
To put it bluntly this is a film that is very much of the time that it was made and released with this being something that really could alot of people off of watching this film. As the film does frequently talk about caning students with one of the teachers even being in favor of bringing it back with this being something that does date the film quite alot and it's something that would have dated the film quite badly in the seventies and eighties but even looking past that for a second the film is even dated by how the classrooms look and how the teachers dress which granted is a very minor thing and is one that you can look past when you take into account that the Carry On films aren't meant to be taking a look at the world today there rather taking a look at the world when that film was being made and so of course we are going to be getting a lot of things that date all of the films and sometimes it's not for the better either case in point the film talking about caning something which was dated when I was primary school in the early nineties whilst to the films credit it doesn't take a full blown stance on it either way and the fact that they do have a teacher keep on bringing it up does make sense for there character it is also something that the then modern audience wouldn't want to hear about as they'd just spent all day either hearing about it at the best of times or either hearing it going on in their school or going throughout themselves at the worst of times with it being something that kids today and today's audience thankfully won't ever go through and will mist likely know about in the first place it is something that does however date this film quite badly tho.
To give this film some credit it does have alot of heart to it which is something that work really well in the films advantage. With it being revealed quite early on the reason why the kids are behaving the way that they are is because of the fact that they actually love there current Headmaster and don't want to see him leave which is quite a sweet thing to see in the film and to the films credit it is something that does work really well due to the fact that we get to see just how much the Headmaster means to the kids by how they speak about him and the fact there all willing to get themselves into a lot of trouble with various teachers does help with that point but in saying that tho if they really did like him then they would want him to be happy and him accepting this new job is something that would make him happy due to the fact that he'd be getting a pay raise and better hours and yet by forcing to stay at there school then all it does is make them look selfish as there not willing to accept the fact that this teacher could also be happy teaching at another school and while that would mean that we wouldn't get this film at all it is something that would make the kids look like better people and while the teenagers in this film aren't meant to be the best people they are presented as being kids with hearts of gold even tho how there going about telling this teacher that they don't want him to leave isn't the best way to go about it as that could also mean that all of the teachers loose there jobs and more stricter set of teachers come in and replace it is something that seeks to the teachers that when they find out what's really going on and why they've been acting like this that they don't yell at them they accept it because they to liked this Headmaster Mr William Wakefield with alot of them even seeing him more a friend then a work colleague.
While the student get alot of the more heartfelt moments of the film the teachers get all of the romance parts of the film. With both Kenneth Connor and Joan Simms's characters getting love interests in the film which does feel forced as it's something that adds anything to the plot of the film but in saying that tho it is something that does give the delightful Kenneth Connor alot more screen time as we get to see his character Mr. Gregory Adams first try and make Miss Felicity Wheeler fall in love with him in order to make sure that Mr. William Wakefield gets the job of headmaster but then over the course of the film he does slowly start to fall in love with with her for real which was kind of a sweet thing to see in the film with both actors really acting their respective socks of in the scene where he does finally tell her how he really feels something that he'd be struggling to do all throughout the film with the romance between Joan Simms's Miss Sarah Allcock and Leslie Phillips's Mr Alistair Grigg really falling flat on it's face as it doesn't add anything either to the plot of the film or the two characters with it only being there because of the fact that the makers of the film thought that they needed to give Joan Simms a love interest and that's as there romance doesn't hit home the same way that the romance between Mrs. Wheeler and Mr. Adams does as you get to see those characters slowly bond over the course of the film and therefor when he does finally confess his true feelings for her then it's something that does feel earned where as with Mr. Grigg and Mrs. Allcock we don't get to see any of that with it being clear as day that neither of the two actors have any kind of chemistry with each other in the first place with it coming across as them being more like good friends then it is them being each others love interest.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and twenty two minuets and fifty six seconds. Which to be fair to this film that is pretty much the exact grand total running time for alot o the Carry On films with the film even having the right amount of plot there to really cover that amount of running time but in saying that tho this film really doesn't use it's running time all that wisely as this films plot isn't that well developed as the film doesn't take the time to set anything up in regards to it's plot rather it just gives us the pay off alot of the time which isn't as satisfactory with even the films more heartfelt moments not even getting the time that they really needed to breathe with even the films characters not even being that well developed either as all of them come across as being very one dimensional characters when it would have helped the film out quite alot if the film did take the time to further develop it's plot and it's characters as both of them could use alot of work on them as with a much more developed plot would mean that the film wouldn't need as much padding out as it gets as the film very easily could have filled out that running time with no padding but for whatever reason the makers of this film felt that they needed padding for this film and so they included that pointless romance with Mrs. Allcock and Mr. Grigg all of which adds nothing to the plot of the film and is there purely to pad out the films running time with this taking away screen time that could have been much more better used in developing quite literally any of the films characters or plot of the film but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is a comedy that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With this film being chock filled to the brim with alot of really good jokes in it with this being something that could also be said for alot of the early Carry On films as well with the thing that makes the jokes in this film work really well is the fact that the makers of this film put all of their effort into it's jokes which is something that did pay off quite well as we get alot of really good jokes in this film with the films best joke coming when the students act like that they haven't gotten any more jokes planed for the teachers and so when the teachers are all if the staff room they all inadvertently fall to several pranks all set up by the students which is a great way to show of all the actors comedic chops as we get to see all of the actors that are playing the teachers not only make some really funny faces all of which do make there prank all the more funnier but in the case of both Charles Hawtrey and Hattie Jacques we also get to see just how good there comedic timing as they get alot of the more slapstick jokes in that scene and due to how well they act in thar scene it makes it all the more funnier then what it really could have been as on paper that is a scene that could have fallen flat on it's face for being to long but due to how funny all of the films actors are in that scene we get a funny joke that's oddly enough not long enough just due to how funny that scene and lot of the films other jokes are in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall while this film does have all of the potential to be a really good film it's also a film that really can't live up that potential as there's just so much that stops the film from being as good as it really could have been this is despite the fact that when the film is good it really can be quite good in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good an as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 6.5 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from Wikipedia , the official Carry On fandom wiki page and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images really from this very film being the really great Google Images this is really because of the fact that really all of the images that I really indeed got and really used from Google Images are all really high quality really with all of the images that really are all and of course really currently up and on the really great and the really solid Google Images really are all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
