Tom And Jerry 2021 Film Review
To say that Tom & Jerry are not only one of the most well known silent comedy duos and have also had shockingly bad luck when it comes to theatrically released movies would be huge understatements. As even tho they've released two full length movies into theaters there both not that good but when a third movie in the works maybe it's third time the charm but until then we have a movie that did try to recapture the spirit of the original shorts and it's that very film that i'm going to be talking to you all about today and so the join me as I review the film that got a TV series sequel with the film in question being called simply just "Tom And Jerry" enjoy.
The plot of this film is when Tom is hired to get rid of Jerry from a high end hotel the duo are forced to team up and help out a young employee when a high end wedding is put at risk. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty nothing more then OK at best as while this films plot does feel like the kind of plot that would fit a Tom And Jerry movie it's also not the kind of plot that best fits Tom And Jerry as these two characters work there best when they have very little plot and that's something that a feature length film can't have as a film needs to have a reason for existing in the first place but in saying that tho this films plot is ten times better then the plot of the duo's previous theatrically released movie was as this films plot does at the very least try to keep the characters the same as they were in the shorts but both plots force in a human story where it's not really needed but to give the plot of this film some credit it does tie the story of both Tom And Jerry and this films human character Kayla alot more better then Tom And Jerry: The Movie did as the hotel that Kayla works for is the same hotel that Jerry is trying to stay at which is a fun way to tie the two sets of characters together as they would naturally cross paths in that setting and having them all come together to help pull of this wedding does work really well with the plot of this film not really being really rather entertaining and nor is it really rather rather engaging either in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Kaiji Tang as Tom and Tiger and via archive recordings William Hanna as Tom. Also starring in this film is André Sogliuzzo as Jerry , Bobby Cannavale as Spike , Nicky Jam as Butch , Joey Wells as Lightning , Harry Ratchford as Topsy , Na'im Lynn as Meathead , Spank Horton as Ash , , Lil Rel Howery as Tom's Shoulder Angel and Shoulder Devil , this films executive producer and director Tim Story as A Pigeon Announcer , Jeff Bergman as Droopy , Chloë Grace Moretz as Kayla Forester , Michael Peña as Terence Mendoza , Rob Delaney as Mr. Henry Dubros , Pallavi Sharda as Preeta Mehta , Jordan Bolger as Cameron , Patsy Ferran as Joy , Ken Jeong as Chef Jackie and Colin Jost as Ben.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. With this films actors turning in some OK performances which is something that is so much more better then what a film like this would usually get as usually the acting in a live action film adaptation of a classic cartoon would be pretty bad but here you can tell that the films actors are at the very least trying to turn in a good performance the issue is tho is that alot of them give the exact kind of performance that you'd expect from them with the best examples of this being both Chloë Grace Moretz and Michael Peña with Chole giving the kind of performance that she usually gives in bad films like this one and Michael has jus been trying to repat his performance from Ant-Man in alot of the family films that he's been in since the release of that movie with little to know success with the same thing being true here with the best actor in this film also being oddly enough Chloë Grace Moretz as while the films voice actors are indeed good in this film the actors playing Tom and Jerry as to be expected don't have that much to say in this film where as with Chloë Grace Moretz she does get alot more time to put across her performance which even tho it's the same kind of performance that she does for all of her bad movies is still fairly enjoyable to watch in this film with the acting that's in this very film not really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so bad as it gives none of this films actors absolutely nothing to work with interms of what it is that there actual characters personalities are even meant to be in this film which is something that really does hurt the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
Doing the CGI for this film is the legends and the greats that are currently over at Framestore , Duncan Studio and Clear Angle Studios. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in his very film was in all honesty not that bad as the films CGI does blend into the live action setting really well with the film of course using 3D CGI animation to bring all of it's animal characters to life with all of them having the same look and feel that has been present in alot of the more recent Tom And Jerry movies and shows only here it's now in a live action setting with the films use of CGI working really well when by all rights it could have been really bad but given just what effects companies were involved with the making of this film we do end up with CGI that not only manages to recapture the look of the original designs but also update them for grown ups as well with this being one of the few films where you kind of have to use CGI as there's no way that you could do this film with no effects as there's always going to have be some level of effects in the film with the only thing that does make the effects in this film look bad it's that alot of the time Tom and Jerry don't look like that they were actually there on set due to the fact that alot of the time the eye lines for what the live action actors are looking doesn't match up which is something that does take you out of the film a little bit as all if does is remind you that your watching a bad film and that's really it.
Unlike the previous film this film does keep Tom and Jerry silent apart from of course there respective screams. Which is something that the previous Tom And Jerry theatrically released movie failed to do where they end up talking alot more then what they should do as part of the charm of these two characters was the fact that they never talked barring one or two lines of dialog every so often and a few there screams which happend on a very rare occasion but by having them talk it robbed them of there charm that made them standout from all of the other talking animals out there and instead made blend in with all of the other talking animals out there when Tom and Jerry should always be standing out and be silent as that's where these characters work there best with them being allowed to shine more because of it audiences in the 40's understood that as did both William Hann and Joseph Barbera as well and yet for some odd reason the makers of the nineties film chose to have them talking all throughout the film where as the makers of this film thankfully went back to what works with this duo by having them remain silent and only interacting with Kayla through through the use of either signs with the words on them or in charades with the characters then being allowed to be there typical charming selves and be just who we the audience not only know them to be but also want them to be like as well and while there characters aren't that well defined in this film with them not really having a reason to hate each other the fact that the makers of this film took the chance and kept them silent does show that there more then willing to respect the property that there adapting something which cannot be said for the nineties movie where they changed so much of what made the characters work in the first place that they might as well be different characters in the first place.
This is wear alot of the positives for this film do come to an end tho is much like the nineties film this film does have some very badly done human characters. With this film also being the very stereotypical lier revealed story for the films main character Kayla as even tho this film is named after them Tom and Jerry aren't the main characters of the movie and while a lier revealed story can work if it's done right it very rarely is as it's something that you can see coming a mile away with it more often then not being a very cheap way to generate drama in the films third act when this is a film that really doesn't need to be that kind of storyline as you could have told any storyline with the character of Kayla and it would have worked and would have worked even more so if you don't make her the main character and make the characters that audiences are actually going to the movie to see be the main characters as you very easily could have made the whole film be about Tom and Jerry going from place to place just trying to find a place to live only for there constant fighting be the course of what gets them kicked out in the first place and have a story with Kayla who they could bump into alot of the time happen in the background and be it's own side plot as you can have Tom and Jerry be the main characters of their own movie as there more then strong enough to support there own movie they just need the right creative team to pull it off and it could even be argued that the fact that the duo have starred in several direct to DVD movies on their own is more the enough proof that you don't need human characters to take the lead roles in a Tom And Jerry movie.
Terence the films main villain is such a weak villain as while he does a believable motive for hating the cat and mouse duo as they ultimately cost him his job at the hotel. He's just not that threatening of a character as he barely gets to interact with them before he gets fired and suddenly he hates there guts which is something that would made alot more sense if we got to see all three of them in more scenes together as then that hatred could also come from the fact that both he and Tom where unable to catch Jerry which given then Michael Peña is more of a comedic actor would have played more to his strengths as then he would be allowed to pull these more funny faces but because that doesn't happen it does come out left field when it turns out that he hates the duo and wants them both out of the hotel which even then doesn't last long as he turns back to the side of good and willingly works with them in the films third act which makes the whole point of him being the main villain be completely pointless as while he does yes get exactly what he wants by the end of the second act we then don't get to see how he changes as a character t the point where working with them makes him truly happy again and while Tom and Jerry have never really had the best of luck when it comes to having villains in any of there movies even there more bad movies at least had villains that are so outlandish and so much like a cartoon that they then become memorable as a result of it take for example once again Tom and Jerry: The Movie yes the film is bad but you at least remember those villains with those villains being actually evil characters with it feeling like that the makers of this film were to scared to go all the way with Terence as the main villain and so they did what all kids movies these days seem to do and redeem him as a character.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and forty one minuets and one second. Which to be fait to this film is pretty much the exact grand total running time that you'd expect a mid budget family friendly film like this one to have with this film just about having the right amount of plot there to really cover that amount of running time in the first place however tho this film really doesn't use it's running time all that wisely as the plot of this film isn't as well developed as it could have been as this films plot isn't that well thought out with the film deciding to make the wedding between Ben and Preeta it's big ending when this film really didn't need one as while the wedding does make sense for the Ben character as that was his character arc it doesn't make sense for a Tom and Jerry movie with it feeling like that the makers of this film wanted to make a comedy starring Chloë Grace Moretz but then suddenly remembered that they have the rights to Tom and Jerry and so squeezed them in their at the last second as that's how little that they add to the plot of the film with this films characters not even getting any bit of the character development with the only few characters getting something close to that being Kayla and Ben and that's it as even Tom and Jerry get nothing in this film as they go from hating each other to being back back to hating each other again with it not really being explained why they really hate each other in the first place with this being something that should have been in the film as it would have added to there characters but this really does go to show you that more though and more effort was put into the lice action characters then it was the animated characters but I really will admit that this film really does gave some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is a comedy that really does mean that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. As the slapstick between Tom and Jerry is really good even if the film just uses alot of the old jokes from the shorts and barely does anything new with them joke wise but where the jokes do start to fall flat is when they have the human characters try and say and do something funny as none of what the makers of this film have the human characters actually funny things to say or do but rather they give all of the films truly funny things to Tom and Jerry which is something that does really make sense as you can have those characters do anything and as along as it looks painful then it will be funny as is the case for alot of this films slapstick humor with the best joke in this film being when Tom first spots Jerry in the hotel from across the street as he gets himself all dressed up with things that will make him fly with him then flying up above the clouds in a really good reference to Tim Burton's Batman only for Jerry to close the window on him when he gets close enough which then also results in Tom getting electrocuted as well which is a good example of just how funny that this films comedy could be as it shows that the makers of this film really do know how to do funny Tom and Jerry style slapstick and have it work in the more realistic setting of this film with alot of this films Tom and Jerry jokes being really good jokes as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall while there is a third theatrically released Tom And Jerry film in the works and one from China also being worked on called Tom And Jerry: Forbidden Compass what can be said for sure is that whilst this film is a bad film it is a step up from the previous theatrically released Tom and Jerry film and is a huge step in the right direction in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 5.5 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in tis very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from the official Tom And Jerry fandom wiki page and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images really from this very film being the really great the official Tom And Jerry fandom wiki page this is really because of the fact that really all of the images that I really indeed got and really used from the official Tom And Jerry fandom wiki page are all really high quality really with all of the images that really are all and of course really currently up and on the really great and the really solid the official Tom And Jerry fandom wiki page really are all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
