Red Sonja 2025 Film SPOILER FILLED Film Review

Red Sonja despite the character appearing in comic books for decades now has only spawned one live action film in the eighties. Well that's now changed as the second live action film to feature the she devil with a sword has in some countries been released and well then you all just knew that I had to review this film the very first chance that I got and so then join me as I give you my SPOILER FILLED review of the film that really does make the eighties film look like a masterpiece by comparison with the film in question being called simply just "Red Sonja" enjoy.

The plot of this film is when a when she in enslaved by an evil Emperor Sonja must get all of the other slaves together if she has any hope of escaping and stopping the Emperor from enacting his evil scheme. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty bad with this films plot being at best laughably bad and not in a good way either as this films plot is just so bad that it makes the thinly drawn out plot of the eighties Red Sonja film look good by comparison as at the very least that film actually had a plot to begin with where as with this film due to the fact that it's plot is so thinly drawn out that it was very heard at times to work out what the actual plot of the film was even meant to be in the first place as it comes across as the even the film and the makers of his film didn't know what the plot of the film was either as there is so little scenes in this film that advance the plot of the film with the films main plot even feeling like it wasn't being focused on alot of the time this is despite the fact that the film does rather rightfully dedicate some screen time to the films plot the best thing that could possibly be said about this film is the fact that you don't know where it's going and that's it and even then that's only because of the fact that there's so little plot to begin with this films plot instead feeling more like the kind of fantasy plot that you'd see in a fantasy film pre The Lord Of The Rings with the plot of this film not even being really rather entertaining and nor is it really rather engaging either as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Starring in this film is Matilda Lutz as Red Sonja and Misfits star Robert Sheehan as Emperor Dragan The Magnificent. Also starring in this film is Michael Bisping as Hawk , Martyn Ford as General Karlak , Eliza Matengu as Amarak , Veronica Ferres as Ashera and The Mother Of Red Sonja , Katrina Durden as Saevus , Rhona Mitra as Petra , Manal El-Feitury as Ayala and Batwoman and Krypton star Wallis Day as Annisia.

Now then interms if what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. With this films acting being one of the more better aspects of the film which considering just how bad alot of the other parts of the film are isn't really a high bar to reach with this films actors really trying there best to turn in a good performance but alot of them just feel miscast with the films director M. J. Bassett not really helping things as it's clear as day that she has no idea on how to direct her actors and given that pretty much all of the films that she's worked on have all gotten very negative reviews this is something that we all should have seen coming when she was first announced as this films director as even tho Matilda Lutz is the true standout performer of this film with somehow managing to turn in a decent performance she psychically doesn't like that she could hold her own in a fight where as Brigitte Nielsen despite her not really being that good of an actor does look like that she could hold her own in a fight but to give Matilda Lutz this she does look like that she's a good time in making this film with it being clear as day that whilst she's not the only one trying to turn in a good performance she is the only one where it looks like that she knows that she's in a bad movie and is therefor just having alot more fun with the role with the acting that's in this film not really being helped by he fact that this films script is just so bad as it gives none of this films actors absolutely nothing to work with interms of what it is that there actual characters personalities are even meant to be in the first place which is something that really does hurt the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.

Doing the CGI for this film is the legends and the really greats that are currently over at Millennium FX. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then n all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad as this film is basically a direct to DVD movie now so it wouldn't have been wise to expect great CGI in this film and while the films CGI isn't on the level of say Avengers: Endgame for example it's certainly alot more better then we got in either of the previous two live actin Hellboy movies as here you can at least tell that there was some thought and effort put into this films effects and into making it look like the CGI creatures where actually there on set but in saying that tho this film does use alot of CGI when they don't really need to as they very easily could have done alot of this films effects just by using miniatures and make up effects but because they can use CGI the makers of this film have instead chosen to go down that route even tho this film doesn't have that big of a budget and therefor can't have that big of an effects budget whereas if the film went the practical route for alot of it's effects not only would it be alot more cheaper to produce but you'd also get alot more high quality effects that will age like fine wine whereas with the CGI route your going to end up with effects that will age fast because of not only the fact that this films effects budget was really small but also due to the fact that the CGI world moves so quickly now that even effects from last year are now starting to look dated.

Even tho this film is only just now seeing the light of day it's been in development since as early as 2008. With the film having several writers and directors attached to it most notable of which is Robert Rodriguez who even wanted to cast Rose McGowan in the role of Red Sonja which to be fair would have been a pretty awsome casting choice and knowing Robert he would wrote , produced , directed and done several other behind the scenes jobs as well but for whatever reason his version of what would become this film along with several others just never got made which does make this property seem cursed as there are two live action red Sonja movies and both of them are bad and the only solid director who could have done something really cool with the character just wasn't able to get his version of the film made with the film remaining deep in development hell for several years going through several writers and directors until we eventually got this film and to be fair to this film it is a miracle that we got this film at all given that even after the film got filmed and was good as well fully completed they still couldn't get a distributor for the film so even then it did look like that this film wasn't going to get made and while this films script does reek of an early 2000's pre Lord Of The Rings fantasy script it does also have elements from the Captain Marvel as they get rid of anything that made Sonja an actually likeable character all for no reason whatsoever and given the fact that this film took several years to get made you'd have thought that the makers of this film would have taken the time to make sure that they don't go down the same pitfalls as that movie did but no they don't as this film is just as bad as the Captain Marvel is.

This film does provide us with a different backstory for Sonja as instead of being assaulted and left for dead her village is now burnt to the ground with her mother and friends killed right in front of her eyes. Which in all fairness to this film is a good enough backstory and even having the films main villain Dragan play apart of that by being a little kid that Sonja was tasked with helping escape before the kid tripped and let go of her hand was a good enough idea but at the same time tho the film does noting with these ideas as Sonja doesn't spend any part of the film seeking revenge on those that killed her mother rather she spends alot of it upset that someone is holding her horse hostage while she's being forced to fight for Dragan in this arena which doesn't seem like anything that Sonja would have done in the intervening years as she would most likely have wanted to get revenge on those that did kill her mother as she's loosing someone close to her and even if she didn't go that route that's something that would have hardened her up and make her someone that finds it hard to trust people but know she trusts people really easily in this film with even the idea of the villain being someone that she tried to save as a young boy also not really being that well done either as again the film does nothing with it as we don't get to see all throughout the course of the film how that effected both of the characters it's only in the final twenty minuets of the film when that comes back into play and we get to see how that might have effected the characters but by that point it's far to little to late with it seeming like that this film was cut to pieces in the editing process as the film s filled to the brim with ideas that could have great if they actually did something with them and not just mention them once or twice and do nothing with them as that just makes the makers of this film come across as being lazy.

This film does of course feature the live action debut's of both Dragan and Annisia both of whom are oddly more entertaining than what Red Sonja herself is. As while both Annisia and Dragan aren't really given a scheme as it just comes across as them doing rando things just because there evil but we don't even get to find why there evil either but in saying that they still more fun then the actual main character is this is despite the fact that Matilda Lutz is having alot of fun playing her with this being due to the fact that the films villains are actually written more fun with them both being these really over the top villains that could be seen as being campy alot of the time which is something that does make them more fun to watch as characters whilst Red Sonja  is just a stick in the mud this is despite the fact that her while reason for wanting to escape the arena in the first place is just to see her horse which is a funny thing as it's just so weird and out there and yet the film does nothing more with her character that actually makes her fun to watch where as with the villains whilst yes granted they could have been written alot more better then what they actually are they are still entertaining to watch on screen as you never quite know what it is that there going to be doing next with there actors oddly enough underselling what it is that there characters are doing with them playing everything straight when they should have bee chewing the scenery and being over the top and campy with none of the films characters being helped by the fact that this film really doesn't give us a reason to actually care for any of these characters are even gives us time to get to know them so that we can decide if we like them or not with it coming across as we're meant to hate Annisia and Dragan just because there evil and like red Sonja just because she's the main hero of the film and that's really it.

Now then this film has / had and exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and forty minuets and twenty two seconds. Which even for a superhero film is such a short amount of time for this film to have as this film has so much to set up from it's characters to it's plot to even the world that this film takes place in and it can't do all of that and still a good story with it's current running time with the film even having more then enough plot to cover a longer running time but even with that said with it's current running time the film still doesn't use it's running time all that wisely as the plot of this film isn't that well developed as the film has to reach along to the next plot point which does leave things that should be these highly emotional moments instead feeling empty because of the fact that the film hasn't taken the time that it really should have done to develop it's plot with this even effecting the films characters as well as none of them have the chance to show us the audience why we should like them or hate them as the film doesn't take the time that it should have done to develop it's characters and give us reason to either hate them or like out side of the fact that one of them is the good guy and the other is the bad guy and that's really it and yet if the film did have a longer running time yes it would mean watching more of this dreadful film but it would also mean that the plot and the characters would get the chance that they really do need to be fully fleshed out and more thought but for whatever reason the makers of this film thought that this is a film that needed to come in under two hours when history shows us that that's something that very rarely if ever works for a live action superhero film but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.

So now then as this is an action film that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well ten in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. Wit this films action being one of the more entertaining parts of the film as it's where the film gets to somewhat embrace it's comic book route by having it's characters do things that could only work in a comic book film with the best action scene in the whole entire film being the films third act fight between Sonja and her friends and Dragan and his army as that's where the film gets to be not only the most brutal that it's ever been but also the most fun that it ever will be as well as we get to Sonja doing all of these flips from these really high places all to take out several guards in the over direction which is something that will always be cool to see and it's something that does make you wonder why the alot of the films other action scenes aren't like that as alot of them feel like that there to afraid of being a comic book film fight scene and while we do get some other good action scenes in this film like the one where a bunch of Sonja's friends and Sonja herself team up to take on this giant creature in the arena but none of them are able to top the pure awesomeness of this film final fight as that's just such a cool fight scenes to watch in this film this is despite the fact that this film does also have some other good action scenes in it as well all of which make you wonder if the makers of this film put alot more effort into this films action as that's where this film becomes alot more entertaining to watch in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Overall it's safe bet that out of the two live action Red Sonja films that this one is oddly more worse then the 1985 one was at least that film was bad in an entertaining kind of way whereas this one is just bad this is despite the fact that this film does have some good things going for it as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 4.5 out of 10 from me.
