Fixed Film Review
The world of adult animation has come along way since the days of say for example Fritz The Cat and Coonskin for example. As now instead of just of just having swearing with a little bit of political satire thrown in adult animation actually has to be good and yet there was a film out just recently that went the complete and total opposite way and because of that has truly divided the animation fanbase with some either loving it or some others hating it and so then join me as I review the film that would have been much more better received if it was released in 1970's with the film in question being called simply just "Fixed" enjoy.
The plot of this film is when a dog called Bull find out that he's going to have a special operation the next day he sets out to enjoy one last night of freedom with his friends. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not bad however tho this films plot wasn't all that good either as at best this films plot is really weak and feels more like the plot to a bad episode of an adult animated sitcom and not something that you'd expect to see in a feature length film as this films plot is just lacking that extra special something that makes it feel worthy of being the plot of a film and while this films plot very easily could have been the plot of a film if the makers of this film just bothered to make it strong enough to support an entire film but they instead but alot more thought and effort into making sure then you knew that this was an adult movie and next to no effort into it's plot which does have the adverse effect of making this films plot feel more like an afterthought when it's something that should have been given alot more attention as after all a film like for example Fritz The Cat didn't just work because of the fact that it was an adult animated film altho that was yes apart of it but it also worked because of the fact that that films plot weas a genuinely good plot that was well thought out where as with this film it's the opposite that's true as the films plot is so weak that at times it's hard to work out just what the main plot of the film is even meant to be alot of the time with the plot of this film not even being really rather entertaining and nor is it really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Adam DeVine as Bull , Idris Elba as Rocco , Kathryn Hahn as Honey and Fred Armisen as Fetch. Also starring in this film is Beck Bennett as Sterling , Bobby Moynihan as Lucky , Michelle Buteau as Molasses , River Gallo as Frankie , Grey DeLisle as Nana , Aaron LaPlante as Luther , Scott Weil as Alex , Julie Nathanson as Julia , Michelle Ruff as Emma , Kari Wahlgren as Honey's Mom , Sean Chiplock as Ol' Spice and Daran Norris as Napoleon.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. With this films acting being one of the more better aspects of the film which given the rest of the film really isn't all that much but in saying that tho the fact that this film does have some good performances really shouldn't come as that much of a surprise to anyone given just who is starring in this film as this film does have alot of really good actors in it and therefor it does make sense that there would be alot of really good acting in this film with this films actors really giving it there all in this film however what lets this films acting down quite a bit is the fact the actors do feel miscast with this films co-writer , producer and director Genndy Tartakovsky really going more for name value rather then casting alot of the right actors for these roles with the only actor that's perfectly cast in this film also being the films best actor with that being Idris Elba as really nobody else could play the role of Rocco like he does with it being clear as day that he's the only actor that's actually trying to turn in a good performance in this film with the acting that's in this film not really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so bad as this films script really doesn't give this films actors absolutely anything to work with interms of what it is that there actual characters personalities are even meant to be in the first place which is something that really does effect the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
Doing the animation for this film is Renegade Animation and the legends and the greats that are currently over at Lightstar Studios. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual animation that's actually featured / presented to us i this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual animation that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With the film being 2D handdrawn animation which is not something that you really see all that often these days and yet here it's something that does look really good with all of the films backgrounds looking really crisp and detailed with even the films character designs looking very nice as well however much like with the films plot i's crystal clear where the main focus of the film was meant to be as you get to see almost every single dogs backside and in the case of Bull what there also working with as well in alot of detail and that's just not something that we need to see as even tho this is an adult animated film it's something that proves that this film is only adult in the most childish way possible as while yes the characters do have some really nice fluid movements to them we don't need to all of the attention on all of the backsides as that's paper that could have been better used to drawing something that would actually be pleasant to see on screen but because of the fact that the makers of this film really wanted you to know that this film is an adult animated film it means that we get to see parts of a dog that we really don't need to see and when the film shows quite literally anything else in the film it looks great because of the fact that you can see all of the blood , sweat and tears that went into making each and every single frame of this film with the films animation being something that does need to be praised regardless of what people think about the actual quality of the film itself.
This film is one that should gave been released in the 1970's as much like with Fritz The Cat this film isn't afraid to go to those ark and mature places. However tho unlike Fritz The Cat or even Coonskin for that matter this film doesn't use the fact that it's an adult animated film to it's advantage by telling a more mature story with mature themes and characters as the most mature that this film gets is the fact that we get dogs hooking up with each other every five and swearing like a sailor every fifteen minuets and that's it whereas with both Fritz and Coonskin they both used the fact that there animated films to comment on life as a person or in the case of Coonskin they used it to comment on racism in 1970's America both of which are themes that you couldn't tackle in a kids animated film and both of those films come across as being more mature then what this film did and heck even going to a more recent adult comedy we have South Park: Bigger , Longer And Uncut which used it's more mature rating to essentially tell the story of a boy who just wants his mother to stop fighting all of these battles and come home to just be a mother again and that's it which again makes that film feel alot more mature then what this film does with all three of the above mentioned films even having a healthy dose of satire thrown in for good measure where as with this film it feels more adult in the most child like way possible as it doesn't have anything to say that makes it more adult and while this film would have been much more better received if it was released in 1970's due to the fact that we didn't really get alot of adult animated films then the fact that it wasn't and it was released now where we have alot more better adult animated material out there does in it's own unique way make this film already feel dated.
Just to give you all an idea of how long that this film has been in the making the idea for the film was first conceived back in 2009 with development on the film beginning all the way back in 2018. While this is something that you really can't tell as there are no dated jokes or references in this film it is something that does make you wonder why the makers of this film didn't take the chance to fix any and all issues with the film during that development phase as if they did that then they actually could have made a film to be truly proud but for whatever they instead chose to leave the film as it is even when Warner Bros first picked up and then dropped the film only for it to then get picked by Netflix they still didn't make changes to make the film as none of this films characters are three dimensional characters as they all have nothing to them with none of them having a personality or anything that makes them standout from each other which again would have been fine if this was an episode of a TV show as then you have the excuse of well they have several other episodes to express there personality however this is a movie and while it's great that this is a Genndy Tartakovsky passion project that doesn't mean that all of the characters have to be empty shells as all of the dog in this film come across as being the dumb one in the group when if they gave the characters some depth and personality then a character like Lucky for example who is the groups dumb one would be able to standout alot more and the films bully character Sterling would be able to come across more arrogant then what he already is with Honey who is the most like an actual character in the whole film not even having that much to her character even then she's a show dog who is in love with Bull and that's it and that's not enough to make those characters memorable as truth be told none of this films characters are memorable characters and will very quickly be forgotten about by alot of people.
To give this film some credit it does try to have some heart and does try to tell a decent enough love story between Bull and Honey. The issue is tho is that the film is written well enough for the films more emotional moments to work and the films love story is so predictable that you know where it's going right from the second that the film starts that story up and while the film does get credit for at least trying to do both of those things it really can't do them all that well because of the fact that neither of them are given the time that they need to breathe and be developed like whenever the film does try to have an emotional moment with one of it's characters instead of just letting the moment sit with us the audience they instead undercut it with a bad joke at best or at worst the moment just doesn't work because of how badly done that the films characters are and the romance apart of the film just flat out doesn't work because of the fact that the film barely mentions it with it barely playing a part in the plot of the film that it is until the films final twenty or so minuets by which point it's far to little to late where as if both of those things had been given the time that they really did need then they could have worked really well and could have made the film more mature then what it actually is but because of the fact that the makers of this film seem to think that having sweating and gore is more then enough to justify being an adult film those moments that actually could have made the film an adult film get pushed to side when they should have been pushed to the forefront of the movie which does go to show that even tho Genndy Tartakovsky has made some adult animation before this film will easily go down as the adult animated thing that he's ever worked on.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and twenty six minuets and forty one seconds. Which again to be fair to this film is a perfectly solid amount of running time for a film lime this one to have or rather it would be if the film had more then enough plot to cover that running time which is something that sadly isn't even close to being the case with this film as this film at best has more enough running time for about forty five minuets with the rest of this films plot being nothing more then filler that adds nothing to the overall plot of the film and would have been better left out of the final cut of the film with this film not even using it's running time all that wisely either as this films plot isn't that well developed to the point where it is hard to work out just what the main plot of the film is even meant to be in the first place as the film doesn't even focus on it's plot long enough for it to be developed where as if the film did develop it's plot then it could have made the plot a whole lot more better when that it actually is in the first place with the same thing even being true for all of this films characters as none of them are that well developed and none of them have anything interesting about them that makes you want to get to know them more with them all just coming across as being flat and boring characters whereas if the makers of this film actually took the time to fully develop it's plot and characters then the film might actually be alot more better of a film instead of mess of a film that it actually is but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is a comedy film that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well the in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt tat the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty surprisingly not that bad. As the film does have alot of really funny jokes in it all pf which do take as full advantage of the fact it's adult film by showing the dogs get into some really adult situations and while some of them are better dine then others alot of them are really funny jokes with even the idea that Rocco , Bull , Lucky and Fetch chasing down a squirrel just to well be frankly totally destroy it all the while one of them has no clue why they were chasing it in the first place is a very darkly funny joke however tho the best joke in this film is one that I sadly can't say just due to how adult that the joke is but let's just say that the joke happens deep into the films third act and and includes both Bull and Sterling in a rather adult situation which is something that was gut bustingly funny just due to how of guard that it catches you with that joke with that joke really showing us the audience that the makers of this film really do still know how to tell a good joke that works within the fact that this is an adult film with that joke even adding something to the plot of the film as well as it serves as how the character of Bull getting his own back on Sterling even if Sterling doesn't quite realise it which is something that alot of this films jokes just don't do as there more focused on being adult then they are in actually being funny in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall it's hard to believe that Sony Pictures Animation the same studio that just a few months back took the world by storm with K-Pop Demon Hunters produced this film as this film is nothing more then a film that's average at best and will be forgotten about within a weeks time in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the and things that are in this very film in this very review and a such that really does mean that this film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 3.5 out 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in his very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally sued in this very review from the official Sony Pictures Animation fandom wiki page , IMP Awards . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images really from this very film being the really great the official Sony Pictures Animation fandom wiki page this is really because of the fact that really all of the images that I really indeed got and really used from the official Sony Pictures Animation fandom wiki page are all really high quality really with all of the images that really are all and of course really currently up and on the really great and the really solid the official Sony Pictures Animation fandom wiki page really are all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
