The Old Guard 2 Film SPOILER FILLED Film Review
Comic book movies are a dime a dozen these days with there being so many released each and every year that it would be understandable if people did forget about one of two of them being released. With the film that i'm going to be talking to you all about today being one such a film as this film got so little fan fare when it was first released just a few days ago and given that else is coming out it's more then likely that people just won't know that this film is even out in the first place and so then join me as I give you my SPOILER FILLED review of the film that was filmed in 2022 and is only just now getting released with the film in question being called simply just "The Old Guard 2" enjoy.
The plot of this film is Andy and her team discover that an old friend of there's has finally been found but is now seeking revenge on the team and it's up to Andy and team to stop her before it's far to late. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really bland with bland being the best word to describe this films plot as there's really nothing to the plot of this film that makes it feel unique and that makes it feel different from all of the other comic book movies out be they animated or live action as this film is alot more focused on giving us some really good looking action scenes then it is in giving us a good plot and while focusing more on the action does somewhat make sense as it's something that the Fast & Furious films oddly enough also do with those films tho the plots are so dumb in the first place that you do kind of buy into them irregardless of how well thought out that they are where as here this films plot is being treated so seriously that you can't buy into it due to it being so bland when if this was a film that had a more dumber plot something which the set up of this franchise does allow for then it wouldn't matter how bad the plot is because you won't be there for the plot you'll be there for the action and with this film being as bland as it is then the makers of this film should have done something to make it feel all the more exciting then what it actually is with the plot of this film not even being really rather entertaining and nor is it really rather engaging either in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is one of this films producers Charlize Theron as Andromache / Andy and KiKi Layne as Nile Freeman. Also starring in this film is Marwan Kenzari as Joe / Yusuf Al-Kaysani , Luca Marinelli as Nicky / Nicolò Di Genova , Matthias Schoenaerts as Booker / Sebastian Le Livre , Veronica Ngô as Quỳnh , Chiwetel Ejiofor as James Copley , Henry Golding as Tuah / Hang Tuah and Uma Thurman as Discord.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With this films acting actually being one of the very few highlights of the film as it's clear as day that all of this films actors know that there starring in a bad film and because of that there just having fun playing there characters which is something that really does shine through in the final product and while it would be easy to point to quite literally any of the of the returning actors from the film as being the best actor in this film as they would have more time in playing there characters the best actor in this film is quite easily Uma Thurman as Discord as she just plays the character with such a menace that it's hard not to buy into her performance and while her character isn't that well written with also being an issue with the rest of the films characters as well it doesn't mean that her performance as the character is bad because it's not as she really did understand that she really was in a bad film and so she chose to play the character as over the top as possible which is something that really does work well for this character as this is a character that would act in over the top ways and the fact that she leaned into that does make her performance fun to watch with the acting that's in this film not really being helped by this films scripts as the the script for this film is just so bad as it gives none of this films actors absolutely nothing to work with interms of what it is that there actual characters personalities are even meant to be the first place which is something that really does hurt the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
Doing the CGI for this film is Image Engine Design , Scanline VFX , NetFX , Pixomondo , One Of Us , WeFX , Tryptyc and Light VFX. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad but at the same time tho you can quite clearly tell that alot of this fil was made in a computer as alot of the films effects do look very fake alot of the time almost as if the film didn't have that big of an effects budget which if that was the case then fair enough but given the big names that are starring in this film it would also make alot more sense to give this film a big effects budget as while these Old Guard movies aren't effects heavy movies they do still have alot of effects in them with this film having quite alot of effect that would look more at home in a cutscene of an early Playstation 3 video game then what they would do a full length feature film film with the best of example of this being the opening scene of the film as the backgrounds to that scene just looked so fake that all it does is pull you out of the movie and while yes granted this film does have plenty of good looking effects in it as well but those are very few and far between with the film having alot more bad looking effects in it then it does good ones and given the effects companies that are working on this film you would expect to be the other way around but for one reason or another this films effects just aren't as good as they really should have been or even could have been either for that matter.
SPOILERS START HERE!!!!!!!!!!!
Believe it or not this film does share two things in common with the Ironheart TV show in that not only did both finish filming years ago but they both end on a cliff-hanger ending. However unlike Ironheart where you could very well make the case that even if the show doesn't get a second series then the story of Riri Williams will continue on in the various MCU films here there's no third film planned which makes the whole idea of doing a cliff-hanger ending all the more pointless as now those few of us that did actually see this film might not never know how the story ends and if Andy actually does get her team back from Discord this is something that the makers of this film should have thought off as they had three whole years since the film finished filming and entered post production to actually fix but they didn't which either means that there already talking about a third film and it just hasn't been announced as being in development yet or they were really banking on this fil being a global smash for Netflix and thought that a third film was already guaranteed and given the really low Rotten Tomatoes score for this film it's highly doubtful that this film will be a global hit for Netflix which does leave no way for this story to continue with this being something that the makers of this film really should have thought off as you should always end on a cliff-hanger when you know for sure that you have other ways to continue the story as now all this does is leave those of u that actually watched this film with a half finished film and that's really it and while yes this films writer and co-creator of the comics that this film is based off of Greg Rucka could very easily have the story continue on in the comics but who want to read a series that could go for years when you can see that exact same story play out in a film with in being the film that started off the cliff-hanger in the first place.
While it would be very easy to just hate on this film there are some decent things to be found in this film. When the film wants to be fun it could be a really fun movie with the films opening action scene being a good example of that as it shows us just what alot of the group bring to the team in fun and creative ways or the fact that the film does have some good tension in it due to the fact that Andy made herself mortal in the last movie something which comes to great effect during the films final action scene as we the audience know that she could die at any minuet whereas in alot of the first film due to the fact that she and her whole team where immortal that was never going to happen with the very fact that the makers of this film were able to build tension out of something so small does show that they do know what there doing alot of the time it's just a shame that alot of the time all of there efforts or focused on other things as the films plot is so weak that it might as well as not even be there and the films characters are basically just one dimensional cut outs of characters from The Expendables only without the charm and wit to make those characters work in this film with being mainly because of the fact that the film takes itself far to seriously where since this is film about a group of immortal beings going around the world fighting crime you do kind of have permission to be as dumb as you need to as that very idea alone is a very dumb idea and yet because of the fact that the film plays it super straight alot of the time it stops the film from being fun this is despite the fact that the film does through in a few jokes here and there none of which thankfully don't undercut the tension of the scene but because of the fact that this film was filmed three years ago it really does show alot of the time in it's jokes and in other scenes as well.
To be blunt this films villain Discord is a pretty weak villain as the only thing that she wants throughout the whole film is the immortality of all of the other members of the team and that's it. Which OK fair enough is in keeping with these films but at the same time outside of having a massive skybeam for no reason it's the most bland villain scheme there is with her scheme not even fitting in with her name as Discord is meant to be someone who causes chaos no matter where she goes and who she does it to with the goal to cause more chaos and more destruction being the only thing that would drive a villain with that name and yet here she doesn't want any of that and heck we don't even see her take on any other teams outside of Andy's team which would have been a great way to show us the audience why her character is a threat to this team and why we should be fearful when this team does go up against her but because that's an actually smart idea we don't get any of that as instead all we get is scenes with her talking about she's going to do and scenes with her talking about how powerful that she is which doesn't make her an interesting character as instead it makes her scenes a chore to sit through this is despite the fact that Uma Thurman does play the character really well and perfectly well cast as the character but just because there's an A list actor playing her doesn't mean that the makers of this film had to be lazy when it comes to writing her character as they very easily could have given a plan that would involve her causing chaos to billions of people across the globe with it only being Andy and her team that can stop her which OK fair enough isn't the best of plans but it's better then what we got in this film as her plan in this film whilst it isn't all that bad it's also not all that good either.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and forty six minuets ad forty three seconds. Which is such a short amount of running time for this film to have as there's no reason why this film had to be that short as you very easily could have gotten this film up to two hours without ending credits just by developing upon and expanding upon the main plot of the film as this film really does have more then enough plot there to really cover that amount of running time but this film really can't use it's running time all that wisely as it's more busy rushing along to the plot point instead of developing it's plot which does have the adverse effect of making the plot of this film not only feel weak but also underdeveloped and more of an afterthought with the film not even being able to develop any of it's characters either as it's more focused on setting up it's big cliff-hanger ending for a third film that might or might not come then it is in actually giving us characters that we like and want to see more off with this being something that the first film knew to do as it gives us likable characters that we wanted to see more of and it developed them to the point were we the audience could then form that connection with them with this being something that this film forgets to do even with it's returning characters as it's more focused on action then it is on character and plot and yet without having a fully thought out plot and characters that we actually like it won't matter how good the films cliff-hanger ending is or how well done the action of this film is because we the audience just won't care either about the film or about it's characters enough to want to see them make it out of this film alive ad well but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is an action film that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. With this films action actually being the most entertaining aspect of the film with it being made clear as day right from the films first action scene all the way up until its pretty solid third act battle that all of the films effort went into it's action which again is something that does make alot of sense as this is an action film afterall and therefor you do expect some decent amount of effort to be put into this films action but not at the expense of the plot or the characters as those are things that should always come first and because of that it doesn't matter how good this films action is because of the fact that the film doesn't give us the audience a reason to care for any of it's characters be they good guys or bad guys something that the Fast & Furious films for all of there many faults do make sure that we care about the characters going into an action scene were as here we feel nothing for any of these characters and there for when Booker does die in this film we feel nothing for Andy because the film hasn't give us a reason to care for any of it's characters with the films best action scene being the third act battle as it's just so cool seeing Uma Thurman and Charlize Theron just go at it in a pretty solid sword fight something that would make sense given that there characters are meant to be Ancient Greece with the rest of this films action scenes also being quite good as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
SPOILERS END HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!
Overall given just how bad the Rotten Tomatoes score is for this film it's not hard to see why this film has been getting alot of bad reviews as it really is a bad film with it being next to impossible for a third film to even get greenlit because nobody really will be interested in seeing a third film just due to how really bad that this film is in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 3.5 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from the official The Old Guard fandom wiki page , the official Marvel Cinematic Universe fandom wiki page , IMP Awards . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images really from this very film being the really great Google Images this is really because of the fact that really all of the images that I really indeed got and really used from Google Images are all really high quality really with all of the images that really are all and of course really currently up and on the really great and the really solid Google Images really are all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
