Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret Of The Ooze Film Review
Without a shadow of a doubt the best time to be a fan of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was easily the nineties as there was so much stuff related to the turtles released during that time period. Including a very successful hit live action movie and with that movie being a hit film it was all but guaranteed that there would be a sequel and that's exactly what we got one year later and so then join me as I review the film that is to date the final actually really good live action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film with the film in question being called simply just "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret Of The Ooze" enjoy.
The plot of this film is some time after The Shredder has been defeated the turtles find themselves trying to rescue a kidnapped professor who may or may not hold the secrets to there past. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in al honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad but at the same time tho this films plot isn't all that good either as it just feels like a more watered down version of the plot of the first film even down to this film straight up copying aspects of the first films plot as well only without any of the charm that made it work in the first film and with the only thing that this film has going for it from a plot perspective is the fact that it does feel somewhat closer in tone to the original film this is despite the fact that the film is actually alot more watered down in other aspects as well with the plot of this film being goofy and fun but not in a way that makes it distracting as any plot from this franchise should be goofy and fun as the premise alone is one that's very goofy and while the plot of this film could have been alot more better then what it was it's at least not as bad as the next film which just had a terrible plot with it being made clear as day that there was an effort in this film to make the films plot actually good something which does shine through all through out the film with the plot of this film also being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Brian Tochi as the voice of Leonardo and Robbie Rist as the voice of Michelangelo. Also starring in this film is Adam Carl as the voice of Donatello , Laurie Faso as the voice of Raphael , Kevin Clash as the voice of Splinter , David McCharen as the voice Oroku Saki / The Shredder , Michael McConnohie as the voice of Tatsu , Frank Welker as the voice of Tokka and Rahzar , Paige Turco as April O'Neil , David Warner as Professor Jordan Perry , François Chau as The Shredder , Pro Wrestler Kevin Nash as The Super Shredder , Toshishiro Obata as Tatsu , Mark Doerr as Freddy and Ernie Reyes Jr. as Keno.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this verry film was in all honesty really good. With all four voice actors for the turtles turning in some really good performances in their own but at the same time tho both Josh Pais and Corey Feldman did play both Raphael and Donatello much more better then both Adam Carl and Laurie Faso do in this film this is despite the fact that both of them really are fine as these characters and Paige Turco is good in this film she really doesn't hold a candle to how good Judith Hoag was in the original film with the films acting being alot more better then what it really had any right to be as by all rights this films acting should have been really bad and yet it's clear as day that all of this films actors are turning in some really good performances in this film and are bringing there A game to this film with the films best actor being Robbie Rist as the voice of Michelangelo as he really is a joy to watch in this film much like he was in the first film as well with him really capturing the spirit of the character and while he really doesn't have the depth that was in the character in the first film he still really does have the charm to pull the character of in this film with the acting that's in this film really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so good that all this films actors have to do is just say the lines as they are written and a good performance will come out of them naturally which is something that really does help to raise the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
For some odd reason parents where upset about the turtles using there very hard to find let alone buy weapons in the first film so much so that they don't get used in this film. Yet those same parents were alright with the turtles advocating for an all pizza diet something that kids can easily get and easily buy and heck even the entire first thirty or so seconds of the film is spent just showing the people of New York eating Pizza's with it seeming like that the parents got themselves all worked up over the wrong thing as a kid isn't going to know where to get the turtles ninja weapons from but what they will know is where to get Pizza from with this also carrying on to the next film as well as again the turtles in that film don't use there weapons and act more like watered down versions of themselves in that film then they do in this film with it seeming like that the parents that got upset over the first film only saw the cartoon and hadn't read the comics which is fair enough as the show was really popular at the time but at the same time if your going to get upset over the turtles using weapons that are going to be hard to find let alone buy in the real world then you better be ready to get upset over them advocating for an all Pizza diet as that is something that kids not only back then in the nineties but today have more easier access to with them it being more then likely that a kid will get killed from gaining to much weight then they are from using a ninja weapon and while yes granted ninja weapons are very dangerous kids are smart enough to know that when one is being used in real life then they could end up at best getting seriously hurt.
For one reason or another they really cut down alot of April's screen time in this film with the makers of this film instead giving alot of scenes to the new character Kano. Which makes sense in some aspects but not in others it makes sense in that of course the makers of this film want to establish this character as a friend and ally to the April and the turtles and that's fair enough but it doesn't make sense in that there doing that at the expense of April herself as she gets alot less screen time then what she got in the first film bearing in mind that the character whilst she did have alot to do in the first film didn't as much screen time when compared to the male characters either and yet the makers of this film chose not to rectify this in this film by giving her alot more screen time rather they then instead chose to half it in favor of introducing a new character who the films target kid audience aren't even going to recognize all for no reason whatsoever as Kano's role in the film very easily could have been filled up by Casey Jones but because his character was to violent for parents they replaced him with a more watered down version of the same character and heck April doesn't even mention him in this film even tho he helped them out in the last film and while adding Kano doesn't effect the film in anyway shape or form as he is a serviceable character it comes at the expense of a character that kids would actually want to see more of because of the fact that they already have that connection with her thanks April already being in the classic animated series and while yes granted she does play a role in the plot of this film here it's more of a glorified cameo as she doesn't really do all that much in this film.
To give this film some credit it does at least try to be a good film as the suits that were well loved from the first film do come back as does the films more serious tone. With the films more comedic moments taking more of a centre stage which is something that does work as with sequels you do have permission to be alot more fun with the characters and plot and that is something that the film does take as full advantage of as they possibly could have done even down to having the turtles interrupting a Vanilla Ice concert and having him sing the now infamous "Ninja Rap" which was granted is a goofy thing and a goofy moment but it's only something that could happen in a sequel as it would feel to out of place in the first film given the fact that while yes the first film had it's fair share of comedic moments as well it was alot more serious in tone with that film drawing more from the original comics and only borrowing certain aspects of the original animated series where as with this film it seems like the makers of this film went the other direction which does result in some gloriously ridiculous moments all of which don't feel out of place as they do help to make the film feel alot more fun to watch with the best joke in the whole film being the raid on the science lab when the turtles fight of members of the Foot Clan you can quite clearly see members of the Foot Clan just standing around moving from side to side which might have been done to make it look like that there actually doing something but interms of context for the story it makes no sense as surely they would all want to step in and help out given that the turtles nearly wiped them all out in the last film but but for whatever reason they just stand out doing nothing which is what makes that one bit of the film the best joke in the whole entire film.
Much like with alot of this film The Shredder in this film does feel like a more watered down version of himself. As while we do get to seem act threatening we don't get to see him back it up something that we got to see alot of the time in the previous film and when you add in the fact that they pretty much retcon the ending of the first movie just so that they can use him again in this movie it makes it weird that the makers of this film would use this villain again given the fact that it was vey strongly implied that Casey Jones killed off at the end of the last film by flipping the lever on the garbage truck that he had fallen into with this not really being helped by the fact that he was given two annoying side characters in the form of Tokka and Rahzar who are only there due to rights issues with Bebop and Rocksteady with them basically filling the same roles that those two played on the show with even The Shredder not really having much of an end goal in mind in this film which granted he didn't really have one in the first film either as then his only goal was to basically corrupt the teens of New York and that's really it where as here it just seems to be to attack the turtles which is fine for the animated series version of the character where you have basically a plan of the week and only have twenty two minuets to tell that story whereas here you have around about one hour and thirty minuets to tell the story and therefor you have to make the villain interesting and not just threatening and one of the ways to do that is to give them an end goal as while the film does start something with The Shredder wanting the ooze to form his own mutant army the film doesn't really do anything with it and even that plan feels like something that any version of Baxter Stockman would want to do and not The Shredder.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and twenty eight minuets and thirty four seconds. Which again to be fair to this film is a perfectly solid running time for this film to have as even tho it's still an incredibly short running time the film does still pack quite alot into that running time with the film even having the right amount of plot there to really cover that amount of running time as well the issue is tho is that the film also really doesn't use it's running time all that wisely either as the plot of the film isn't as well fully developed as it really could have been as the films plot is basically just copying elements from the first films plot including exact scenes only now there done slightly differently even down to the only human in the film who can hold his own in a fight being the one to befriend Raphael and even having Raphael and Leonardo having a fight that leads to Raph going of on this own those elements worked in the first film because of the fact that they were well build up due to the film being more then willing to take it's time and develop them properly whereas here there only included because of the fact that they were done in the first film with nothing about the plot of the film being that well developed and heck we don't even get to find out what the secret of the ooze is in the first place with the films new character Kano not even being that well developed as he just feels like an audience stand in character and really nothing more then that which again makes you wonder why the makers of this film just didn't bring back Casey Jones as he was a fully fleshed out character who the audience actually loved where as here next to nobody likes or even remembers Kano from this film as that's just how badly developed that this character is despite the fact that he's acted really well by actor Ernie Reyes Jt. but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is an action film that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With this films action being just as good as the action in the first film only now in this film the makers of the film can be a bit more fun with there action scenes and it is something that does show in the final cut of the film as we do get to some really fun action scenes all of which do work really well in the film and while granted they won't be as good as the action that we got in the first film they will for sure be alot more better then the action that we got in the third film with the films best action scene being the films opening fight scene where we get to see all four turtles beating up a bunch of robber and spouting one liners all the while the truly epic theme by this films composer John Du Prez plays in the background with the films opening fight being so good as it will always be good and fun just seeing the turtles use whatever weapons that they can find to beat up bad guys and while all of the turtles very easily could have used there weapons which they all have with them with even the film going out of it's way to openly show Leo using his swords as a way to lift himself up whilst two bad guys run into each other it still doesn't change the fact that the opening fight n this film is one that's really fun to watch with this film being filled to the brim with really fun filled action scenes as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall while this film is worse then Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles it's easily better then Teenage Mutant Turtles III as this there is still effort to make a good film and while the film does have alot of things going for it the things that it has going against do make this film like a watered down version of the first film as that's all this film is and to be fair the film does make it work to it's advantage in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 6.5 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from the official Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fandom wiki page and IMP Awards .
