Attack Of The 50 Foot Woman 1958 Film Review

There are some films out there that are just born to be cult classics like alot of the early Godzilla films for example. Another example would most likely be This Island Earth and alot of the monster movies of the fifties and sixties well the film that i'm going to be talking to you all about today is one such a film as you can tell right from the title just what kind of film that your going to be getting with this film and so then join me as I review the film that altho it's really classed as being a horror film is more of a science fiction drama with the film in question being called simply just "Attack Of The 50 Foot Woman" enjoy.

The plot of this film is when a wealthy heiress has a lose encounter with an alien she suddenly finds herself fifty feet tall. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us inn this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. With this films plot not being all that good either as there's really noting interesting about this films plot that makes it good as it feels like it's trying far to hard to be a good movie and as a result of that is the fact that the films plot comes across as being weak and unfocused as the film doesn't really spend alot of time on it's plot and instead focuses more on the relationship between Nancy and her cheater husband Harry with the plot of the film feeling more like an afterthought to the films effects and while it's easy to see why this films plot helped it to become a cult classic as this is the kind of plot that does mend itself to being a cult classic film it's also a plot that should have been given more love and attention then the relationship between Nancy and Harry was it feels like that the makers of this film just straight up forgot to include a plot in their film and so they just added in something bad at the last minuet as that's how tacked on that the plot of this film does come across as being and while it's not unusual for science fiction films of this time to have badly done plots here tho it's something that really does stand out and not in a positive way with the plot of this film not even being really rather entertaining and nor is it really rather engaging either in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Starring in this film is Allison Hayes as Nancy Fowler Archer , William Hudson as Harry Archer and Yvette Vickers as Honey Parker. Also starring in  this film is Roy Gordon as Dr. Isaac Cushing , George Douglas as Sheriff Dubbitt , Ken Terrell as Jess Stout , Otto Waldis as Dr. Heinrich Von Loeb , Eileen Stevens as The Nurse , Frank Chase as Deputy Charlie and Michael Ross as Tony , The Bartender and The Giant Alien.

Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that he actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty one of the more better aspects of this film. As while no one's going to disagree that the film does have some pretty bad acting in it alot pf the time with alot of the performances coming across as being wooden that is something that does add to the cult classic nature of this film as you get a sense that all of this films actors know full well that there in something bad and so there just not going to bother acting in it this film and while that might be seen as being a bad thing it does oddly enough make the film more entertaining to watch as you never really know just what kind of performances that your going to be getting from these actors which it could be argued does make there performances a little bit more unpredictable in the process with the films best actor being it's main star Allison Hayes as she does play this very wealthy character who is a bit of an alcoholic and yet she somehow makes her seem human and while her performance doesn't make her a likable character it does make her a character that you want to see more of and want to know more about in the process with the acting that's in this very film not really bein helped by this films script as the script for this film is just so bad as it gives none of this films absolutely nothing to work with interms of what it is that there actual characters personalities are even meant to be in the first place which is something that really does harm the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.

One of the best reasons to this film is it's effects as they are something that do make you wonder how they did that. As these days alot of this films effects would have been in a computer back the fifties that just wasn't an option and as a result of that is the fact that the makers of this film and ither films like this one had to get creative when it came to doing their giant effects and showing the person or thing that is a giant and while in this film they do make fairly obvious some of the times when the background is nothing more then a still photograph for scenes like when a giant Nancy is walking to town or when the hand of The Giant Alien comes into frame to pick up the police car those are effects that do have you wondering how they did it and those are the kind of effects that are cool to find as more often then not you find some really creative solutions to what today would be a really easy problem and while yes some of the films effects do look laughable as they straight up have the character of Harry be played by a doll when Nancy picks up near the end of the film that is something that doesn't change the fact that alot of this films effects are really cool to see and what makes them cool isn't the fact that they were done for real altho that is a huge part of it rather it's the fact that they have you wondering just how did it and that is something that we take for granted today as nine times of ten the solution is that was done in a computer and that is something that does take away from the movie magic of it all and it's something that will make the effects in this movie seem all the more cooler then what they actually are because of the fact that we're left wondering how they did it in the first place.

This film is meant to be a monster movie and in those you typically want to see the titular monster cause alsorts of destruction. Which is something that Nancy the monster of this movie doesn't do and heck you don't even see her in her giant form until the film is almost over which makes you wonder why the makers of this film even bothered to make what is basically a giant monster movie in the first place as they quite clearly weren't that interested in telling a giant monster storyline as they were more focused in making sure that we the audience got to really hate Harry and therefor love Nancy as the makers of this film spend alot more time on there relationship then it does on quite literally anything that you'd want to see in a giant monster movie now this would e fine if the film was a romance film as then it would make sense for put alot of focus on their relationship however it's not as it's billed as being a science fiction horror film and while you can quite easily see the science fiction aspect of the film it's horror aspect is missing which granted is also true for something like Gojira as well but with that film they were at least trying to say something about real world problems and issues in ways that helped to make the film seem scary here it just seems like the makers of this film were just cashing in on the giant monster movie craze of the fifties only this time they wanted to appeal to the female audience and because they did that they ended up downsizing all of the stuff that you want to see in a monster movie and up playing all of the things that you want to see in a romance film which are things that just don' work in a film like this one.

To be positive about this film for a second you can quite easily see why this film became the cult classic that it did. As even the title of the film immediately makes you think of something that's a cult classic and that's great as not every film needs to be a hit film that's fondly remembered as sometimes being a cult classic can work to this films advantage as is the case with this film as this is a film that is bad and that is cheesy but it's also entertaining in how cheesy it is and is one of those films that could be considered so bad that it's good as the film does also have alot of really positive aspects to it as well like the fact that the chemistry between Allison Hayes and William Hudson is undeniable and the fact that the film even has somewhat of comedy policemen in the character Deputy Charlie does make the film some what entertaining to watch as you never really know just what it is that your going to be getting with even the film becoming such a cult classic that's spawned several dozen knock off's and a remake in 1993 with there even once being talks of doing a sequel which was to have a much more larger budget then what this film had with the script for the film even being fully written there is one thing that would have made the film alot more fun to watch tho and that's if the fact that the film leaned into the fact that's a campy , cheesy and corny science fiction horror film as then the makers of this film would be allowed to have alot more fun with the material and everything that people hate about this movie they could now love as the makers of the film would be in on the fact that they know that it's a bad movie as well.

Even tho this film is technically classed as being a horror film which it really isn't there's only one thing in this film that just screams horror. With that being the fact that alot of the women in this movie have these ear piercing screams whenever they see either The Giant Alien or a the giant version of Nancy and that's really it as outside of that aspect of the film there's nothing in this film that just screams horror with the film having next to nothing that you'd want to see in a horror film outside of one jump scare near the end of the movie and that's it which isn't enough to justify calling this film a horror film now you could get away with calling this film a science fiction drama as there are enough basic elements from both of those genres to justify that but you can't call it a horror film and then have nothing that's actually horrific in the movie and while yes it could be argued that seeing a woman go from normal height to over 50 feet tall is what makes it a horror film that is at best a pretty flimsy reasoning as they could also be used for any of the Godzilla films as well and yet none of them are classic as being horror films this just makes it seem like that the makers of this film really wanted to cash on in the giant monster movie phase but didn't want to actually make a giant monster movie and whilst it might seem like that i'm repeating myself that's only because of the fact that the poster for this movie made it look like that we'd be getting something that's truly awsome when instead what we got was something that wanted to be both a romantic drama film and a horror film at the exact same time and yet both of those genres just don't work well together at all as one will always cancel out the other much like how they do in this film by the makers of the film choosing to focus more on the relationship between the main characters rather then adding anything to the film that might make the film seem like more of a horror film.

Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and five minuets and thirty seconds. Which whilst that is a perfectly solid running time for this film to have this is a film that also could have been alot more longer then what it already as this film really does have more then enough plot to really cover that amount of running time in this first place as all you'd have to do to reach a longer more needed running time is just develop the plot of the film a lot more and that's really it as inn it's current form this film just doesn't feel long enough and feels like that it's rushing to certain plot points instead of getting to them more naturally and while even tho this film really doesn't use it's current running time all the more wisely either as the film doesn't take the time to fully develop it's plot or even get to showing Nancy causing havoc in her giant form as the film oddly saves for the final ten to five minuets of the film and yet with it's current running time that is something that they'd need to be getting to by no longer then the twenty minuet mark as we don't have to make sure that we like the characters in a monster film as that's not why people go to see them in the first place they see them to see the monster wrecking havoc on either a city or small town and that's it with the film not even taking the time to fully develop any of it's characters with all of them at best being very note characters like Harry who's only memorable thing is that he openly cheats on his wife with Honey and even Nancy who's only memorable thing is the fact that she's rich and that's it as the makers of the film quite clearly aren't that bothered about making these characters that well developed which makes this film just alot less fun to watch then what it already was in the first place but I really will admit that this film has some really bad pacing to it tho.

So now then as this is a drama film according to IMDB that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the acral drama that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual drama that' actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. However you don't do into this film wanting to see a drama much like how you don't go into a comedy film expecting it to be a straight up horror film as this film puts alot more thought and effort into it's drama aspect then it does it's horror aspect just due to the fact that the makers of this film give the relationship between the main two characters alot more focus which if this was a drama film would make sense but it's not it's meant to be a science fiction horror film and yet the film doesn't devote any time to either aspect of the film with the best moment of drama all throughout the film being the scene where a giant Nancy finally wakes up from her coma and breaks free from her chains in her house and just destroys her own house before going around town looking for her husband who is busy dancing with his girlfriend Honey only for the giant Nancy to catch up to him and destroy the bar that there in killing Honey in the process but it doesn't stop there as the whole thing ends when she grabs her husband and unwittingly squeezes the life out him before getting shot and killed herself the issue is tho is that that's the only bit of drama in the film that's worth seeing as alot of it is just Nancy and Harry arguing over and over again and there's only so many times that you can see that before it gets boring which in this film happens very fast with the film becoming all the more predictable because of it and even the ending of the film does feel like a bit of anti-climax as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Overall it's not only easy to see why this film became a cult classic as it's all there not only in the film but in the films title as well but it' also not that hard to see why there have been alot of different knock off films as well as this is a film that is just very easy to create a knock off film from in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself grand old score of exactly a 4.5 out of 10 from me.

Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well s ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from IMP Awards . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images really from this very film being the really great Google Images this is really because of the fact that really all of the images that I really indeed got and really used from Google Images are all really high quality really with all of the images that really are all and of course really currently up and on the really great and the really solid Google Images really are all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
