The Addams Family 2019 Film Review

Out of all of the comic properties out there there is one that doesn't get as much attention as it should has been getting more attention in recent years. That being of course The Addams Family as for a long time they were very rarely if every mentioned let alone get another movie made about them and yet that's exactly what happened when it 2019 the creepy and cooky family became the stars of their very first animated movie and while this movie isn't that good it's still better then The Addams Family 2 and so then join me as I review the film that makes Wednesday the main character with the film in question being called simply just "The Addams Family" enjoy.

The plot of this film is when home makeover TV host Margaux Needler plans to destroy the Addams's mansion it's up to The Addams Family to prove that being weird is the only way to be. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad as it was the kind of plot that would work perfectly well for an animated Addams Family movie but at the same time given just how good the first live action films where from a plot point of view it does make this films plot feel oddly tame by comparison almost as if the makers of this film forgot that they were making an Addams Family film and because of that they just played it safe by giving us the most safe and generic plot that they could have done which is something that doesn't work well enough with this family as you have permission to go to those weird and dark places when working with The Addams Family as the family themselves are dark and weird and yet by playing it safe it just makes everything else feel off and like it was made by people who don't care about the franchise and while this films plot is a really safe plot it really does get credit for at least trying to be like a plot fit for The Addams Family something that can not be said for the sequel which really is more focused on trying to be a Hotel Transylvania knock off movie then it is in trying to be an Addams Family movie with the plot of this film not really being really rather entertaining and nor is it really rather engaging either in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Starring in this film is Oscar Isaac as Gomez Addams , Charlize Theron as Morticia Addams and Chloë Grace Moretz as Wednesday Addams. Also starring in this film is Finn Wolfhard as Pugsley Addams , Nick Kroll as Uncle Fester , Snoop Dogg as Itt , this films co-director and co-producer Conrad Vernon as Lurch , A Priest , The Spirit Of The House and Dr. Flambé , Allison Janney as Margaux Needler , Martin Short as Grandpa Frump , Catherine O'Hara as Grandma Frump , Tituss Burgess as Glenn , Jenifer Lewis as Great Auntie Sloom , Elsie Fisher as Parker Needler , Aimee Garcia as Denise , Scott Underwood as Mitch , Mikey Madison as Candi , Chelsea Frei as Bethany , Pom Klementieff as Layla and Kayla , Deven Green as Ms. Gravely , Maggie Wheeler as Trudy Pickering , Harland Williams as Norman Pickering and Ggerri and Bette Midler as Grandmama.

Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With this films performances being one of the very few things that this film got alot credit for and it's not that hard to see why as all of this films actors do turn in some really good performances in this film which is something that does make alot of sense as alot of this films actors are a bunch of really good actors in their own right and while the casting for this film is kind of obvious with them just using celebrity voices the actors that they chose do fit there respective characters really well with the likes of Chloë Grace Moretz and Charlize Theron amongst others being a perfect example of this and it's always going to be a good time hearing Catherine O'Hara in anything with the best actor in the whole entire film being Chloë Grace Moretz as she does perfectly capture Wednesday's voice really well and does do a good job with the character something that couldn't have been that hard to do given the fact in terms of feature films there's really only been one actor to play that character really well and that's Christina Ricci and yet she somehow makes the role all her own as well with this films acting not really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so bad as it gives none of this films actors absolutely nothing to work with interms of what it is that there respective characters personalities are even meant to be in the first place which is something that really does harm the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.

Doing the animation for this film is the legends and the greats that are currently over at Cinesite Animation and Sparx* Vietnam. Now the interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual animation that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in al honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual animation that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good and like the films acting the films animation was one of the few things that the film did actually get alot of praise for and again it's not that hard to see why as there was clearly alot of thought and effort put into this films animation and it's something that does show on screen and while this film was only made for around $25 million American dollars that's not something that you can tell by the films animation as animation wise it does look like that it cost alot more to make with the films animation knowing when to be creepy with it's designs and knowing when to play things for laughs as while the designs for the family themselves did get alot of hate back when this film was being released they are designs that are as close to the original designs from the comic strips and they do work with this films animation style with the family looking intentionally odd and out of place where the designs don't work however is with the films human characters as while The Addams Family are meant to look weird and out of place with there designs the films human characters also oddly enough look weird and out of place when it would have worked with the films message of being weird is OK if the human characters looked normal but because they don't they just look weird and more off putting then the characters that are meant to look off putting and creepy.

For some reason this film chooses to make Wednesday it's main character with both her and Morticia even having a plot line in the movie and while the plot line does work as it's Morticia coming to terms with the fact that Wednesday wants to be her own person. What doesn't work is the fact that this films version of Wednesday just isn't that interesting of a character which is something that could be said for alot of the characters in this film as the film really doesn't give us the audience a reason to care for her character when what would have worked was if the film made Pugsley the main character as while he does basically have the same plotline as Wednesday only it's now with Gomez and not Morticia with Pugsley we at least get the sense that he might be ostracized from his family if he gets this dance wrong something which isn't helped by the fact that both Gomez and Fester do put alot of pressure on him to make it perfect at the expense of him just being himself and while that might be the more predictable of the two plot lines as we know right away what the outcome will be it still does give us the audience a reason to care about his character this is despite that Wednesday on the whole is the better character because across all Addams media she is the one that gets alot of attention with her even getting her own successful Netflix TV show but that doesn't mean that she has to be the main character as she very easily could have played a minor role in this film and then have her take centre stage in the sequel as by then us the audience would have been given more of a chance to know her character but for one reason or another the makers of this film thought that it was a good idea to have be the main character of two movies back to back.

While the film does get it's franchise characters pretty spot on with all of the characters acting how you think that they would do. Where the film does fail is it's new characters as none of them are all that memorable with the only exception being Parker and even then she gets shafted when it comes to the sequel which makes her character pointless as she's meant to be Wednesdays friend and she never gets a shout out in that movie and yet here in this movie she plays a big role in Wednesday and Morticia's plot line with her even willing to wear darker clothes just to get some extra attention from her mother but she is the gold standerd in this movie when it comes to the newer characters as all of them including Margaux are just bland and uninteresting characters and while the film does introduce new members of The Addams Family that do have some pretty fun designs to them none of them come across as being interesting character with even fewer of them getting any actual lines of dialog which makes you wonder why the makers of this film bothered to include as many new characters as they did as they can barely do the franchise characters any kind of justice and yet now there expected to make these new characters interesting which they just aren't bothered about doing like for example there's a mean girl character called Bethany who could have been an interesting character if we got to delve into why she is the way that she is which is something that would have worked as it could be tied into the main plot of the film but for one reason or another the film makes alot of it's new characters just these bland and uninteresting characters.

Speaking of Margaux she is just not that interesting of a villain as her whole is trying to make this perfect village with all of these houses that are practically the same. Yet when she sees the addams mansion of course she sees red and wants to get rid of it because it doesn't align with her image of what perfect is and yet that's not that well defined as even tho she's all about conformity and people acting and behaving the exact same way all she does all throughout the film is act differently then everyone else which is something that doesn't work with her character as while yes this is a character that would very easily snoop on her neighbors but by putting in hidden cameras in there houses she is straight away acting in an odd and weird way as nobody else would do that and yet by her books and her standards that's OK if the makers of this film wanted to make her villain then they should have gone all out with it by having her be a character that is desperate for TV ratings that she'll do whatever it takes even if that means ignoring her own child something which would then make alot of sense when you take into account that Parker and Wednesday are the same character only one of them is more darker then the other and so of course they would now want to be friends with each other as Parker has a mother that won't give her attention and Wednesday has a mother that gives her two much attention and top of that she doesn't really have a plan as she only decides in the last few minuets to destroy the addams mansion something which would have meant more if this was in a sequel movie and was actually built up to alot more then is but because it's in this movie it looses all impact as we the audience haven't the time needed to get to know these new versions of the characters and it's not something that that's well built up with coming out of the blue and is for no reason whatsoever.

Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and twenty seven minuets and twenty six seconds. Which to be fair for this film is a pretty solid running time for this film to have with this film just about having the right amount of plot there to cover that amount of running time but in saying that tho this film really doesn't use its running time all that wisely tho as the film doesn't take the time that it needed to in order to fully flesh out it's plot with the film oddly enough having two many plots as there's the main plot then there's the plot with Wednesday and Morticia as well as the plot with Pugsley and Gomez and many more and it's just not that needed as the film could have made it feature length just by focusing on it's plot and yet by having in all of these other plots it means that none of them can be that well developed as there all fighting for time with each other and because of that all of them suffer because all them can't be that well developed with the same thing also being true for the films characters as the film doesn't take the time to fully develop alot of it's characters as we don't don't get to find out anything about alot of this films characters which is something that does make it super hard for us the audience to form a connection with them with these issues being something that could have been fixed if the makers of the film chose focused on what plot instead of giving every single member of the family there own plot as all that does is stop the film from being able to give it's characters any kind of character development as it has to rush along to the next plot point but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.

So now then as this is a comedy that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. However this films comedy isn't all that good either with there not really being any laugh out loud moments yet when you compare this to very first theatrically released Addams Family film which had plenty of laugh out loud moments in it as that film took full advantage of the fact that the family are these weird people and so they had fun with it where as here the only moment like that that we get in this film is when the film starts up proper and we get to see the family just going about there day to day lives as that's them just being themselves and while that scene doesn't have any laugh out loud moments in it it is the closest that we get to seeing the family just act like there weird and cooky selves but when this film does indeed decide to tell a joke that's in keeping with how The Addams Family are as characters it can be a decent joke like the fact that when Wednesday's class is tasked with dissecting frogs she decides to bring not only her own frog but the entire classes frogs back to life in a way that's very similar to Frankenstein which is perfect for that character with the films best joke being when Wednesday thanks the tree Ichabod for hurting her brother just to try and cheer her up which again is something that's perfect for her character and is a good example of when this film wants to tell a good joke then it really can tell a good joke in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Overall while this film is quite easily the better of the two animated theatrically released Addams Family films it's still not that good of a film but to give this film some form of credit there was still an attempt to make a good Addams Family movie it's just that it got bogged down by having to many plots and to few well developed characters and jokes that are actually laugh out loud funny in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and a swell as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 5.5 out of 10 from me.

Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that U personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from the official The Addams Family fandom wiki page and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images really from this very film being the really great the official The Addams Family fandom wiki page this is really because of the fact that really all of the images that I really indeed got and really used from the official The Addams Family fandom wiki page are all really high quality really with all of the images that really are all and of course really currently up and on the really great and the really solid the official The Addams Family fandom wiki page really are all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
