The Electric State Film Review
There are alot of comic book adaptations out there however alot of them are either Marvel or DC with very few of them being from smaller known comic book companies. Which is kind of the case with this film as it is based off of a Swedish graphic novel and well now it's been turned into a live action film that's being directed by The Russo Brothers and written by the writing team behind the last two Avengers movies and so then join me as I review the movie that prove that the robot uprising is real with the film in question being simply just "The Electric State" enjoy.
The plot of this film is when a teenage girl finds out that the brother that she long thought dead is actually alive and well and is piloting a robot to help her get to him she sets out on a cross country mission to get him back. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad but at the same time tho this films plot wasn't as good as it really could have been either as this films plot just felt a very by the book summer blockbuster comic book movie plot with nothing new added to it that makes it seem fresh and new again and while this films plot is a really generic plot it's also not a plot that's all that predictable either as you have no idea just where the plot of the film is even going which is about the only positive thing that anyone can say about this films plot as it's just that average with this films plot being something that has been done better in other and better movies and while the film does have some really good writers working on it with Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely writing the films script the plot of this film just lacks any of the magic that the duo usually bring to there comic book movie scripts with this films plot just feeling lifeless at best with the plot of this film also not really being really rather entertaining nor is it really rather engaging ether as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Millie Bobby Brown as Michelle Greene , Chris Pratt as John D. Keats and Ke Huy Quan as Dr. Clark Amherst / The Voice Of P.C. Also starring in this film is Stanley Tucci as Ethan Skate , Woody Norman as Christopher "Chris" Greene , Giancarlo Esposito as Marshall Bradbury , Jason Alexander as Ted Finister , Martin Klebba as Herman , Marin Hinkle as Ms. Sablinsky , Woody Harrelson as The Voice Of Mr. Peanut , Anthony Mackie as The Voice Of Herman , Brian Cox as The Voice Of Popfly , Jenny Slate as The Voice Of Penny Pal , Alan Tudyk as The Voice Of Cosmo , Hank Azaria as The Voice Of Perplexo , Colman Domingo as The Voice Of Wolfe , Rob Gronkowski as The Voice Of Blitz , Billy Gardell as The Voice Of Garbage Bot , Susan Leslie as The Voice Of Mrs. Scissors and Jordan Black as The Voice Of Clem.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. Which is something that's to be expected as not only do this films directors and producers Anthony Russo and Joe Russo really know how to get a good performance out of there respective actors a skill that is once again proven in this film but alot of this films actors are also a bunch of really good actors with the only real let done performer comin from a really surprising source as even tho she's proven herself to be a really actor in other films for some strange reason Millie Bobby Brown just chose to turn in a bad performance in this film this is despite the fact that she's working with some really good actors any of whom could help to advance her career in the long run with it being made clear by her performance in this film that she's more then happy to stay working for Netflix rather then branching out and doing other projects for other companies with the rest of this films actors giving the exact kind of performance that you'd expect from them which is both something that works both for and against the film it works for the film as it means that we get some really good acting in it but it also works against the film as it then comes across as this films actors just playing themselves and not really playing a character with the acting that's in this film not really being helped by the fact that the script for this film is just so bad as it gives none of this films actors absolutely nothing to work with interms of what it is that there respective characters personalities are even meant to be in the first place which is something that really does hard the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
Doing the CGI for this film is Digital Domain , Industrial Light & Magic , Yannix , Storm Studios , One Of Us and Lola VFX. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual CGU that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad but at the same time given the fact that this film had a budget of around three hundred and twenty million dollars this films CGI really doesn't reflect that hefty price tag with none or very little of that films budget being shown anywhere on screen and while yes granted this film does have some really impressive looking VFX shots in it from time the film does also have alot more bad looking VFX in it as well and given just what effects companies you'd expect this film to have more good then bod CGI effects in it and yet it's the opposite that's true as alot of this films CGI is just OK at best with there really being nothing that truly stands out and makes you take notice of this films effects all of which makes you wonder why the makers of this film chose to go the CGI route for this film as you very easily could have done with better looking practical effects as those will be timeless and won't get dated at all where as even this films best looking effects shots will be dated well within five years time this is despite the fact that this films does have some really good effects in it with those good looking effects being let down by all of this films bad looking effects.
This film is of course based off of the 2018 graphic novel of the exact same name with the graphic novel being written and drawn by by Simon Stålenhag. Just by quickly reading through the books Wikipedia page it does seem like that this film does follow the exact same plot of the book rather faithfully with there being only a few very minor differences as far as I can tell like the fact that Michelle's brother in the book is called Skip instead of Christ and the removal of a Detective character trying to track down Michelle and that's really it but overall it doesn't seen like anything that would effect of the film to much but at the same time tho it really would have been nice to see a more faithful version of the book made into a film as the idea is a solid enough idea that could work as it is in a feature length film format but given that I haven't read the book this film really doesn't make me want to go and check out the book which is a shame as it does seem like a really good book and one that does indeed have the potential to be a really good film as all it really needed was the right people working on it which despite all of the comic book movie pedigree that this films writers and producers and directors all have there not the right people for this film as this is a film that requires a young and hungry film making team to bring it to life and not a group of people who are already well known as they have nothing to prove where as a young filmmaking team that aren't that well known will have something to prove to people and out of that is the fact that we could possibly geta really good film out of it something that we don't get out of this film.
As was mentioned earlier on in this review this film has a huge budget of around three hundred and twenty million dollars. With none of it being shown on screen with the film looking like that it cost a lot less then that to make and heck if you had a young independent film maker make this film on a more most budget of say eighty million dollars then you would get to see every single penny of that budget on screen we all know this because of the fact that we saw it in District 9 a film which cost a whole less then this film did and yet you see every single penny of it on screen and as a result of that is the fact that there really was no need for this film to cost as much as it did as none of this films stars command a high price tag and yet it looks like that alot of the film was filmed in a studio with there being very few location shoots and heck you could have even done the robots practically alot of the time as well all of this would have saved the makers of this film a whole lot of money and it would mean that you would get to see all of the films budget on screen by improving upon things like the production design , the CGI and the costumes all of which don't really get that much of chance to shine despite the fact that this films has one of the highest budgets in film making history and yet it looks like it cost a lot less to make then what it actually it and while having a big budget is common place for all of the MCU movies it doesn't mean that this film really needed a big budget as it in all honesty doesn't need that big of a budget in order to tell it's story as all it needs is a very modest budget and a film maker that's talented enough to make the best use of that budget and that's really it.
To give this film at the vert least some small amount f credit it does try to have an emotional hook to it but its not one that works because of the fact that the film doesn't give us a reason to like these characters. As both Michelle and John aren't written all that well as they both come of as being typical outlaw or rebellious characters with neither of them having anything that makes them likable outside of the fact that we're meant to root for them because of who's playing them and there good guys and that's really it and while that might be good enough for a film made by The Asylum it's not good enough for a big budget film let alone one where the budget is so high that there never going to make it back because it's being released direct to Netflix and as a result of that is the fact that the makers of this film really should have taken the time to make the characters of this film alot more likable then what they actually are as then both of the films emotional moments will work really well with this being made even more worse by the fact that the one for Michelle is a key plot point for the film and yet it just falls flat on it's face because of the fact that we as an audience aren't given a reason to care for her even tho we are given a reason as to why she's doing what she's doing but because her and John are so badly written as characters none of there motivations impact who they are as characters with that being the very thing that stops what should be these tear jerking moments from working despite the fact that on paper these moments should work just fine on there own.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly two hours and eight minuets and twenty nine seconds. Which is a really solid running time for this film and to be fair this film really does have more then enough plot there to really cover that amount of running time but the issue is tho is that the film really doesn't use it's running time all that wisely with this being evident by the fact that the film spends six minuets at the start of the film just on one prolog scene which might not seem like much in the grand scheme of things but it then has a knock on effect of taking away screen time from things that could have used it to further develop either it's plot or story and while having a long prolog might not seem like much and it wouldn't be a bad thing if it actually added anything to the plot of the film but it really doesn't and is there just to show the fact that the main characters brother is smart and that's really it and that's something that gets hit home alot of the time during the main body of the film which makes the whole point of that one prolog scene all the more pointless then what it already is with the film not even using it's running time all that wisely as the film doesn't really take the time that it really did need to in order to fully develop this story or its characters with the story coming across as a very generic action comic book movie type of plot and the characters coming across as being very one dimensional characters all of which makes it feel like that this book would have been off if it was made into a six hour long TV show instead of one two hour long movie but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is an action film that really does mean that I gave to actually talk about the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. Which is something that really all that new as The Russo Brothers really do know how to direct action scenes and make the action in there movies look as good as it really could have been and to be fair to this film it's action is the films best aspect as it will always be awsome no matter what seeing robots fight each other and make jokes about each other and that is something that the film does take as fully advantage of as it really could have done but at the same time tho due to the fact that this film really doesn't take the time that it really does need to to make us care about these characters then the action does feel pointless as we the audience aren't going to care if the heroes win or lose because of the fact that the makers of this film really didn't give us a reason to care about them this is despite the fact that the films best action scene in the whole movie is it's third act fight as we get to see a bunch of robots teaming up to take on a bunch of drones which on paper sounds like that it shouldn't work but because of the fact that it's well directed and edited well it is something that does work in this film with the only real issue being the fact that the film cuts away to the films more emotional moments which just don't work and drag the whole scene down because of it this is despite the action in that act scene being some really well done action that would look good in any movie in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall while this movie isn't the worst movie that Netflix has ever put that out there as that honor will now and for always go to "Cuties" this film is still a pretty bad film that despite having some really good comic book movie pedigree behind the camera and some really actors infront of the camera still just isn't more then an average movie and nothing really all the more then that in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 5 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from IMP Awards . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images really from this very film being the really great Google Images this is really because of the fact that really all of the images that I really indeed got and really used from the really great Google Images are all really high quality really with all of the images that really are all and of course really currently up and on the really great and the really solid Google Images really are all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
