Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs 1937 Film Review
Disney has released a great many important films in the past ranging from films such as The Little Mermaid all the way to Frozen. Yet none of those films are perhaps more important then the film that i'm going to be reviewing for you all today as this film was not only the first fully animated feature length film to be released in theaters but it's also the first ever full length feature film that Disney themselves have ever released and so then join me as I review the film that is perhaps the most important American animated feature length film ever made with the film in question being called simply just "Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs" enjoy.
The plot of this film is when her evil stepmother the queen tries to have her killed Snow White runs away into the woods in hopes of getting away from her and forges a bond with seven dwarfs that might end up saving her life. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt that about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad as it was a really good plot and while the fact that this films plot is one that's rather simple it could very well be argued that that's part of the films charm as Walt Disney himself didn't quite work out how to make a feature length animated film yet and there for the plots for his films including this one aren't going to be that deep and thought provoking and that's great as it lends the film a fairy tale aspect that would have been lost if the film did have a deep and thought provoking plot to it as all this films really needed was a simple plot and this is something that the film does use to it's advantage as it allows the charm of all of the films characters including yes The Evil Queen to truly shine through thus making all of the films characters either more likable or hate able and while the film would have worked just fine if it did have a much more stronger plot to it then what it already has the film would lose that extra special something that it has because of the fact that the plot of this film is as simple and easy to follow as it is with the plot of this film also being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Adriana Caselotti as Snow White and Lucille La Verne as The Queen and The Witch. Also starring in this film is Roy Atwell as Doc , Disney legend Pinto Colvig as Grumpy and Sleepy , Otis Harlan as Happy , Scotty Mattraw as Bashful , Billy Gilbert as Sneezy , Eddie Collins as Dopey , Harry Stockwell as The Prince , Moroni Olsen as The Magic Mirror and Stuart Buchanan as The Huntsman.
Now then interms of I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With all of this films actors turning in some really good performances which is something that really couldn't have been an easy task to do as this is this first feature length animated film and there for everybody involved with the making of this film would have been going into blind and not really knowing not only how long it would take to make the film but even how to make one and yet even with all of that going against them this films actors turn in as good of a performance that they really could have done and while yes granted the acting in other Disney films is better then this film you have to start of somewhere and when the acting in this film is still just as good today as it was back in 1937 then that is something that really does tell you just how good all of these actors where in this film and how much of an impact that they've left on those who grew up watching this film as well with the acting that's in this very film really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so good that all this films actors really have to do is just say the lines as they are written and a good performance really will come out of them naturally which s something that really does help to raise the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
Doing the animation for this film is the legends and the greats that are currently over at Walt Disney Animation Studios. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual animation that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual animation that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good with all of this films animation not only holding up really well even almost one hundred years later but it actually looks just as good if not better then alot of the more recent animated films that Disney themselves have bee putting out because of the fact that you can see all of the dedication and hard work that the animators for this film put into each and every shot and it's that kind of dedication does make would could very well be seen as being outdated animation both look and feel timeless and while yes granted Disney themselves have released better films that have much more better animation in them but none of them quite capture the storybook look and feel that this film does so effortlessly and even Wish which was designed to have that exact same look and feel just couldn't pull it off and yet here in this film it's done wonderfully with this films animation in all honesty looking like it was produced as recently as the nineteen eighties alot of the time where as alot of Disney animated output today will be dated within a few years just due to how fast the CGI world is always both growing and improving with it being the opposite that's true for both this film and for the art 2D handdrawn animation.
It would be wrong to do a review on this movie and not talk about the actual dwarfs themselves with all of the dwarfs having alot of character to them. However it's only one that has any form of actual character development and it's Grumpy as he goes from straight up hating Snow White and wanting her out of his house which he does have every right to demand as she did illegally enter his house to not only befriending her but also leading the charge when the dwarfs find out the she's in trouble and to even being the one that cries the hardest when they believe that's no longer with us with all of his character development coming from all of the time that the two characters spend together alot of it without a word of dialog being said and that is somethin that does make his character growth feel organic and unforced where as with the rest of the dwarfs despite them having a tone of personality so much so that you do kind of miss them when there not on screen together they don't have any form of character development with them remaining the exact same character that they were at the start of the film which is fine as you can't expect every single character to have character development but they still should have a moment that shows that they've grown up as characters even if it's really something as simple as Dopey sayin his first words it still would have been better then what alot of them really did get in this film which was nothing at all when they could have given them something as that would show that they've all learned from there experiences in this film and they've all grown up as a characters as well.
Even tho this is meant to be a romance film it's oddly enough the romance aspect of the film that this film got wrong. Not that it's badly done because not but it's mainly due to the fact that The Prince only has two scenes in the whole entire movie and yet somehow we the audience are meant to buy him as Snow White's greatest love and heck they barely even talk to each other in both scenes so for all we could know those two characters might not be the best fit for each other and this is in all honesty the one aspect of the film that the upcoming remake can actually improve upon as the only thing that would be needed to make the romance work in this film is for The Prince to be in more scenes with Snow White as then both characters get the chance to showcase if they have any kind of romantic chemistry with each other something that doesn't happen in this film with also not really being helped by the fact that this films version of The Prince has about as much personality as Megan Fox in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out Of The Shadows as he's just that bland of a character which fair enough might be the point as Disney has always made these Princess films with little girls in mind but you still need to make the love interest just as interesting the female main character of the movie if you want us the audience to buy into there romance and while this film doesn't fall apart because of the weakly done romance it very easily could have done as all it would have taken is one wrong edit from this movie and the whole thing would have collapsed in on itself because of how weakly done both the romance part of the film and The Prince as a character was also done in this very film.
It does kind of go without saying but The Evil Queen in this movie is quite a scary villain with alot of the films more frightening scenes either including her or happening because of her. While these don't make her a good villain they do make her more of a proactive villain because as soon as she realizes what The Huntsmen has done she immediately sets about creating a plan that will not only work but that she also plans on doing herself something that even modern Disney villains don't really do and while yes granted she's not that interesting of a villain as the only reason as to why she wants Snow White is so that she can be the most beautiful person in all of the land but in going about that she turns herself ugly which reflects how she is deep down on the inside where as Snow White remains pretty all throughout the film and yet The Evil Queen on the outside does look very attractive but because of the fact that she let her vanity and ego get the better of her she ended up looking like an old weathered hag of a person when all she had to do was let Snow White be and she would still be able to get her own suiters but while the character herself isn't that interesting of a character what is interesting is the fact that the ending that they gave her in the film is alot more darker then the one that she got in the original book as in the book the dwarfs make some hot shoes for her force her to keep wearing them and the dwarfs make her dance with them on and that's really it where as in this film she just straight dies at the end.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly oner hour and twenty three minuets and elven seconds. Which is the perfect running time for this film to have as this film has the right amount of plot there to cover that amount of running time as this film DOESN'T NEED a longer running time as it's plot is very simple and basic and therefor it only just needs to reach feature length and that's really it and while yes granted this film doesn't really use in it's running time all that wisely as it doesn't flesh out and develop key characters like The Prince and The Huntsman for example that's more due to the fact that they have more then enough characters there that of course some of them of going to fall by the way side a little bit and while this is something that very could have been fixed by giving the film a much more linger running time that would also have the adverse effect of stretching out this films plot to make it even more thinner and thinly drawn out then what it already is as alot of those extra scenes that would flesh out those characters would be pointless scenes as they would add nothing to the actual plot of the film but on the flip side of that of course is the fact that by fleshing out say the prince's character even if it's fully related to the plot would also make the romance angle in this film alot more believable and actually more romantic then what it already is in the final cut of the film which is something that could also help the film out by quite alot as well but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is comedy that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With alot of this films comedy not only coming from the jokes that the characters tell but also in smaller cute moments as well like a turtle trying to reach the top of the stairs in the dwarfs cottage only for all pf the animals to knock him back down when he finally reaches that top step of even the fact that when Dopey has those big diamonds in his eyes which is already a funny enough sight gag but he then wiggles his ears to show that he's happy the film is just filled to the brim with those cute little moments that whilst they don't get over shadowed by alot of the films more funnier moments like Dopey climbing on top of Sneezy to dance with Snow White those cute little moments don't really get talked about all that much when they really should as there are some hidden comedy gems in there and while fair enough enough Dopey does get alot of the films more funnier scenes some of the other dwarfs also get some funny scenes as well like the fact that all of the other dwarfs literally force Grumpy to take a wash for no other reason then they want to which is a funny moment in the film as is the fact that sometimes Doc get's his words wrong which is a cute little joke in this film which does go to show you all that while the films more outwardly funny moments are good the film really does also have some equally funny cute moments in it as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall with the upcoming remake coming out this Friday that film really does have an awful lot to live up to due to the legacy that this film leaves behind with this film still being not only as good but also as relevant as it was all the way back in 1937 and that is something that the remake will never ever be able to be whereas it's something that this film will always be as it's just that good and that iconic of a film in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 7.5 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the Images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from the official Disney fandom wiki page and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images really from this very film being the really great the official Disney fandom wiki page this is really because of the fact that really all of the images that I really indeed got and really used from the really great the official Disney fandom wiki page are all really high quality really with all of the images that really are all and of course really currently up and on the really great and the really solid the official Disney fandom wiki page really are all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
