In The Lost Lands Film Review

There are some movies out there where all you have to do is just read certain lines from either the poster or the trailer and it lets you know just straight up if the movie will be good or bad. With one of those words being "directed by Paul W.S. Anderson" as he is back at it again with another movie and just like Rob Zombie who casts his wife in all of his movies he's cast his wife in this movie as well and so then join me as I review the film that continues the trend of bad Paul W.S. Anderson movies with the film in question being called simply just "In The Lost Lands" enjoy.

The plot of this film is a Witch and Hunter have to team up to find an artifact for there Queen in lands where nothing is as it seems. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad but at the same time tho this films plot wasn't all that good either which is a shame as alot of the films by this director usually have some pretty solid plots to them or there at least so bad that there good plots but given that he's only directing and producing this film and not writing it as that honor goes to this film other producer Constantin Werner this films plot just comes across as being generic and like the kind of plot that you'd expect to find in a badly done fantasy TV show and not something that you'd expect in a feature length film as the makers of this film really add nothing new to the plot of this film to make it standout from all of the other dark fantasy films that are out there with the plot of this film also being really weak so much so that it was hard to tell what the plot of this film even was alot of the time as it just disappears and reappears whenever it likes which means that the plot of this film does lack alot of focus which does make it hard not only to care for the plot but also be invested in it  as well with the plot of this film also not really being really rather entertaining and as well as not being really rather engaging in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Starring in this film is one of this films producers Dave Bautista as Boyce and one of this films producers Milla Jovovich as Gray Alys. Also starring in this film is Arly Jover as Ash , Amara Okereke as Melange , Fraser James as Patriarch Johan , Simon Lööf as Jerais , Deirdre Mullins as Mara , Sebastian Stankiewicz as Ross , Jacek Dzisiewicz as Overlord , Tue Lunding as The Hammer , Ian Hanmore as The Stranger , Eveline Hall as The Old Homeless Woman , Kamila Klamut as A Midwife , Caoilinn Springall as A Young Girl , Pawel Wysocki as The Gambler , Jan Kowalewski as A Young Monk , Tomasz Cymerman as Outrider and Nicolas Stone as Kane.

Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really bad. Which is to be expected as alot of this films actors are a bunch of really unknown actors and there for to expect good acting wouldn't have been the wisest move for anyone to make but when your two biggest named actors are Dave Bautista and Milla Jovovich both of whom can be decent actors and even there struggling to turn in a good performance then it really does make the acting as a whole seem even more bad then what it usually is and while it would be hard to just blame the director for the bad acting here tho since Paul W.S. Anderson has had good acting in alot of his other movies it really does make it hard to tell who's to blame for the bad acting in this film and while her acting in this movie is really bad it's Milla Jovovich who really gives one of the films more better performances as she really plays to her strengths and lets alot of her acting come out during the films action scenes and it's in those scenes where she really rightfully does get to shine the brightest with the acting in this film not really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so bad as it gives none of this films actors absolutely nothing to work with interms of what it is that there respective characters personalities are even meant to be in the first place which is something that really does harm the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.

Doing the CGI for this film is Flystudio , Herne Hill Media , Hotspring , Mirror3D VFX , Nolabel and PFX. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad with this films CGI being one of the more better aspects of the film as it's clear as day that despite the film having a really small budget and thus having a really small effects budget that alot of the effort went into making the films effects looking as good as they possibly could have done given just how small this films effects budget would have been but at the same time tho alot of this films effects look really fake with it being made clear as day that the motto for this film was we'll fix it in post as alot of this film just looks fake at the best of times as the film adds CGI to things that could have been done practically and yet because of the fact that the film does use so much CGI it makes the film look a cartoon basically with there being very few actually practical sets there all of which combine to make alot of the films effects come across as being dated and over used with CGI when if the makers of this film only used CGI when they absolutely needed to then the film would like an actual live action film and while the film won't look timeless by any stretch of the imagination it will take alot longer for the rest of the films effects to become dated because of it.

Incase you don't know this film is based off of the short story by George R. R. Martin and was published in the compilation book Amazons II. The short story itself was also called "In The Lost Lands" and while the Wikipedia page for the book doesn't cover what the plot of this story is it's hard to believe that they stray to far from the source material but at the same time it is possible that they would do exactly that as they'd have to stretch what would have been a small story that's a quick read into a feature length film which most likely would mean either adding parts to the story or taking away parts from the story but what was laughable was the fact that they make it very clear in all of the films marketing that this is based of a short story by George R. R. Martin and yet he's not done any promotion for the film outside of saying that if the film is a hit then he'll finally write a sequel to the short story and unlike Game Of Thrones where he frequently visited the set here it seems like he didn't even do that and heck he's not even a producer on the film so odds are that they just kept the name of the story and the names of the characters but changed everything else about the story as that's something that they could have done without realizing that all they'd have to do is just adapt the story as it is and just flesh out certain bits of the story and while i've not read the story nor do I plan to it's hard to imagine that this film came from a story that's from a really great fantasy writer as it's just so bland and generic but it's easy to think that the guy who wrote and director the Monster Hunter movie came up with the story for this film tho.

The best word to describe this film is generic as everything about this film is just generic with there being nothing to help to set it apart from the other fantasy films out there. Heck even the fact that this film has a strong western vibe to it isn't all that new either with the film doing nothing all that new or interesting as even the film does set up the fact that the Church has become corrupt and the Earth has been destroyed the film does nothing with either of those concepts thus making them feel like background filler when they should have been getting alot more focus and it's also the same for the characters as since this is a Milla Jovovich movie she has to look good in a lot of her action scenes and carry two knifes from some strange reason yet the film doesn't give us a reason to care for her character and so we the audience are left feeling empty when she does some pretty cool looking stuff in any of this films action scenes with even Dave Bautista not even getting much in the way of character development either and yet there meant to be the films main heroes and yet because of the fact that the makers of this film thought that it was more important to give us passable looking effects and passable action scenes they really forgot to give us some of the more important things that a film really does need to survive and to be actually good and that's a good written plot with characters that we actually care about and actors who turn in really good performances and yet because of the fact that the makers of this film didn't bother to include any of those things the film as a whole just crumbles under it's own weight.

This film has been getting alot of hate for not being the best looking film and while that is indeed true it could also be argued that that adds to the overall look of the film as a whole as well. As this film is meant to be set in a world where everything isn't what it seems and where anything can and frequently does happen and not to have a film that has alot of bright colors to it and looks clean would also take away from the realism from the film as well as realistically this film would look dark and grimy and yet that's exactly what we got in this film and while yes it would have been nice if this film did look alot more nicer then what it does it would also take away from the visual style of the film as well and while the films visuals don't add anything to the film as they do nothing to make the film standout and feel different from all of the other western fantasy films and TV shows out there it also doesn't take away anything from the film either which is something that can be seen as being both a good and bad thing it's good thing in that the films visuals aren't meant to tell the story of this film there only there to make the film feel more real and lived in but it's bad thing because of the fact that it forces you to pay attention to this films characters and that makes the fact that the characters of this film aren't only not likable but are lacking a personality thus making them feel really underdeveloped as characters when the makers of this film should have been giving the characters alot more time and attention and alot less time and attention into creating this films action scenes.

Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and thirty four minuets and three seconds. Which is pretty much the exact grand total running that you'd expect a film like this one to have and yet at the same time tho this film really doesn't have alot of plot there to really cover that amount of running time as by all rights this film really only has enough running time to cover roughly forty five minuets and that's really it and even with in mind this film still doesn't use it's running time all that wisely as none of this film characters are fully fleshed out with all of them feeling like there cardboard cutouts of other and quite frankly better characters with the same thing also being true for this films plot as well and the world that this film takes place isn't that well developed either all of these are issues that could gave been fixed with a decent script but given that the writer of this film wanted to turn three George R.R. Martin short stories into one film it's a miracle that the film ended up being as good as it ended up being as the film would have ended up being even more of a mess then what it ended up being as the film would still have all of the issues that it has now only now instead of struggling to tell one story it would be struggling to tell three stories in one feature length film with this film really being better off if it was instead a TV show as then the characters , plot and world would be allowed to become alot more fully developed due to the longer time that being a TV show allows and yet here with it's current running time this film is nothing more then a compete and total mess of a film but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.

So now then as this is an action film that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty one of if not the best aspect of the whole entire film. As just like with the films effects it's made clear as day that the makers of this film put alot more effort into creating some really good action scenes in this film it's just a shame then that due to the films choppy editing that we barely get to see any of it as the film makes so many cuts during it's action scenes that at times it's hard to tell what exactly is going on in this films actions scenes with the editing during those scenes only slowing down to show Milla Jovovich doing something cool in slow motion and that's really it and what little of it that we can actually make it out is really good and is really fun to when your editing is so choppy that it's hard to make out anything that's actually happening then you need to fire your editor or bring in someone that understands how to edit an action scene because the one that you've got working on the action scenes in this movie clearly has no idea what there doing with the film best action scene in the whole entire movie being where Milla's character is fighting on stop os school bus that's being suspended in midair which is just so cool to see as that's a setting that we really haven't in action movies before now and yet here it is in this movie and we get some really good action out of it as well which is to be expected from Milla Jovovich as she is really good at doing action scenes as that's where she gets to shine the most in any film that she's in in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Overall if you get the chance to go and see this film don't take it go and see literally any other film as odds are you'll have a much more better time with that film then you will this one and yes that even includes the new Snow White movie as at the very least that movie is entertainingly bad where as this movie is just flat out bad in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 5 out of 10 from me.
