Grand Theft Hamlet Film Review
There are some movies that when you here about the very idea of it you just have to watch it just to say that you've seen this truly weird film. Well that's the case for this film as the entire idea of doing a full length feature film set entirely within the confides of a video game is in of itself a weird idea and well then this film has finally made it's way to streaming after being released in the UK late last year and well I just had to watch this film and so then join me as I review the film that will cause players of the game to find locations from the game that they like with the film in question being called simply just "Grand Theft Hamlet" enjoy.
The plot of this film is two actors struggling to cope with the real world decide to put on a production of Hamlet in Grand Theft Auto Online. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot tat's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good with this films plot being just as weird and out there as you'd expect from it's premise however what you wouldn't expect from this film is for it to be a documentary film as nothing released from the film would hint at that and to be fair it is something that does play apart in the plot and it is something that does add a touch a realism to a film that is unrealistic given it's setting and yet at the same time tho it's this films plot that does make it stand out from all of the other films out there as no other film company has thought to do a movie this way by having it bet set within the world of a video game and have all of the footage come from that video game and because of that the plot of this film does have it's moments of being unrealistic which would be a huge negative in other films and yet here because of the fact that this is film has an unrealistic setting it is somethin that does work well enough to this films advantage with the plot of this film also being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is this films co-writer and co-director Sam Crane as Himself / Hamlet and Mark Oosterveen as Himself / Polonius. Also starring in this film is this films co-writer and co-director Pinny Grylls as Filmmaker , Jen Cohn as Herself / Horatio , Tilly Steele as Herself / Ophelia , Lizzie Wofford as Herself / Gertrude , Sam Forster as Rozencrantz , Jeremiah O'Connor as Himself / Ghost / Player King , Dipo Ola as Himself / Laertes and Gareth Turkington as Himself / Claudius.
Given the documentary nature of this film it would be impossible to judge the acting of this film as all of this films actors are playing themselves. However at the same time alot of them are also playing characters from Hamlet and it's there that the acting does get to shine as especially from the two main leads which is something that does make alot of sense as this films lead actors are actual actors in real life with the rest of this films actors being made up of people of people who aren't actors and while that would usually be seen as a negative as it would mean that the film does have bad acting in it here it adds not only to humor but also the realism of the film as well as there acting can be so bad that it's laughable but at the same time it does make sense that there acting is so bad as there not trained actors who are doing this film for free and for the love of the original play and given that this film was being made when the world was shut down nearly all of then are doing this film just to fill the time and have something to do something that alot of us did do during those times and it's something that is wonderfully represented in this film but at the same time tho given the fact that this films main actors are real actors it would have made sense if they brought in some of there actor friends to act some of the characters from Hamlet as that is something that whilst it would cause the film to loose it's realism it would also add to the truly surreal nature of this film.
If you want to see alot of your favorite locations not only from this game but also by default Grand Theft Auto V as well then this film is for you. As alot of the locations from both games are as to expected in this film film which for people like myself who frequently play either game can lead to you pointing out some of your favorite locations from either game and while that can be fun it is something that can take away from the film as all it does is remind you that you could playing the game none of this is of cause the fault of the film makers as they can only work with what they've got and that's really it but at the same time tho it is something that could make us the audience loose interest in where the film is at plot wise but at the same time tho we do get to see the actors in this film drive some of the best cars in both games and seeing them enjoy those cars and vehicles the same way that players have done for years does make it all worth while as does seeing them discover these locations that us players love and have loved for some time and heck even one of the opening shots of this film is of a location that's my own personal favorite location to drive and try to drift cars and seeing it featured it in this film does in it's own uniquely weird way feel heartwarming and while that wasn't intentional at all it was still fun to that location in this film an the fact that the characters drive a muscle car is more then enough to bring a smile to the face of anybody who has ever driven the Duke Of Death in either Grand Theft Auto Online or Grand Theft Auto V.
As was mentioned near the start of this review this film is a video game movies of a different kind as it's entirely set within the game and world of Grand Theft Auto Online. With the makers of this film bravely using a public lobby for this film instead of a private one as it is well known that if you use a public lobby then nine times out of ten you will find yourselves getting blown up alot of the time by random players something that does happen alot of the time and while that does add alot of humor to the film it is something that could have caused the makers of this film alot of stress and unneeded trouble as while this is still yes a documentary even the makers of those film do need to create the perfect shot and that is something that could have been alot stressful to do in a public lobby of this game but at the same time tho it might have been helped by the fact that this film was using the UK servers which to be fair do seem to be alot less violent then the American ones but at the same time tho you never really know just what players are going to be at any moment and therefore it would have made alot more sense once the makers of this film had fully cast the actors for there production of Hamlet that they then used a private lobby for the rest f the rest of the film just to make sure that there production of Hamlet went of as smoothly as it really possibly could have done given it's video game setting.
What not alot of people might not have known is the fact that the entire production of Grand Theft Auto Hamlet was actually streamed or free on Youtube and possibly even Twitch as well. With this film serving more as an extended behind the scenes featurette of the live stream which is a rather bold move to take this film in as they very easily could have just released the entire performance as a feature length film which given it's rather unique setting would have given this film more of a hook then what it already had as the idea of a classic William Shakespeare play inside the world of an insanely popular and violent video game is more then enough to get people interesting in seeing this film in the first place and yet the very fact that the actual play takes up only the last fifteen minuets of the film with the rest of the film being spent dealing with the troubles of putting on a production like this in this kind of setting as well as dealing with all of the creative arguments that come with that the film does loose some of the hook that it would have had as the idea of doing a play like Hamlet inside this video game is a more weirder idea then doing a behind the scenes film of how that production came to be as there are only so many times that you can see both Sam and Mark having arguments with each other which fair enough is apart of the creative process but at the same time it does make the film feel like a chore to watch as your just watching the same scene over and over again.
As a documentary film this film does try to give us likable characters but because of the nature of this film it just can't do that. As it's more focused of telling how this production came to be in the first place which is something that does make alot of sense but at the same time tho there has to be a reason for us the audience to want to see these characters pull his show of and whilst not giving us one does add to the realism of the film it's also something that does rob us the audience for a reason to actually care about this films characters with it not being helped by the fact that all of this films characters whilst they are quite literally real people just struggling to get by they aren't that interesting with the only interesting about all three of them is the fact that one of them is film maker behind the documentary and the other two are actors and that's really it as none of them really showcase just what it is that makes them likable in the first place and just exactly there hobbies and personalities are like outside of the game which whilst that does make sense given the fact that this film does take place entirely inside of a video game it is something that the makers of this film should have done as that is something that could have helped endure these actors to the people who like myself didn't see the live stream and only found out about this film due to news sites reporting on it in the first place but at the same time tho alot of the people who will be watching this film are the people who watched the live stream or took part in the actual production itself and therefor would already know what these characters are like when there not playing the game.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and thirty one minuets and one second. Which is pretty much the exact grand total running time that you'd expect this film to have with this film really having the right amount of plot there to really cover this running time with the film making as best a use of it's running time as it really could have done given it's very unique setting and given the fact that this film was made all the way back in 2021 when the whole world was shut down and as such it would have been quite hard for the makers of this film to get the two main actors together and give us the audience an insight as to what it is there really like off screen and while the film does indeed ask the actors how there coping at that point in time which was in important question to ask given the very unique situation it's not something that the film holds on for to long as the film is instead more focused in showing us in how this production came together when it very easily could have done as it's during those more emotional scenes that we do get very brief glimpses into what life is like for these people when there not playing the game and the film would have benefitted from giving just as much attention to that aspect of the productions production as it would have made all of the films characters alot more interesting then what they already are like for example we find out that Pinny is married to one of the two main actors in this film and yet even tho there working and playing this game together there not spending any real time together something which could have been focused on a bit more as it was a genuinely interesting aspect to touch upon but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is comedy that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us un this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With this film having alot of gut busting moments in it as all of this films comedy stems from the fact that no matter how hard that the makers of this film tried alot of the time they would always either get alot of distractions from other players o just straight up killed in various ways all of which are funny and all of which are things that gamers who have played this game in an open lobby before have all gone through and even if you've just played Grand Theft Auto V and not Online then chances are that you've also gone through something similar and that is something that does make the comedy in this film work as alot of comedies can relate to what the makers of this film go through and because of that all of this films jokes with alot of this films jokes also being really cute jokes either way this film is just so funny with the film being worth watching not just for the concept and premise alone but for it's jokes as well as it is rare to find a film that has relatable jokes in it that not only the kids of today will find funny but also the people who started playing either Grand Theft Auto V or Grand Theft Online all the back in 2013 will also find this film to be funny as they would have experienced everything that the makers of this film go through as well and is something that really does make this film to be alot more funnier then what it really had any right to be in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall if you ever get the chance to watch this film take it as it really just that good of a film and while it might not be the best video game movie out it most certainly is the best movie to be set entirely within the world of a real life video game as that's just how good that this film well and truly is in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly an 8 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in his very review from the official Grand Theft Auto fandom wiki page and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images really from this very film being the really great Google Images this is really because of the fact that really all of the images that I really indeed got and really used from the really great Google Images are all really high quality really with all of the images that really are all and of course really currently up and on the really great and the really solid Google Images really are all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
