Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story Film Review
To many there is only one person who could ever play Superman perfectly and that man is Christopher Reeve. Well rather rightfully there is a new documentary that's just been released all about the man and his career both before Superman and after Superman and well then you all just knew that I had to review this film the very first chance that I got and so then join me as I review the film that is the must watch film of the year no questions asked with the film in question being called simply just "Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story" enjoy.
With this film being a documentary film it doesn't really have a plot to speak off with the film instead choosing to tell you the story of what Christopher Reeve's life was like both before and after the filming of Superman. The very idea of this film alone is just such a good as it's something that really hasn't be told before as it gives you a good insight into someone that not alot of people would have gotten the chance to see in interviews and because of that we get to see just how much of a real life super man that he was as we get to see him struggle with things that we wouldn't get to see if this film was say a biography as those typically have a set beginning , middle and end as they usually tell a story from a certain point in time and that's really it where as with this film it's covering decades of a man's life and we get to see what he was like when he wasn't cracking jokes during interviews and when he wasn't wearing a cape and all of these thigs combine to tell the story of a man who truly was one in a million and will never be replaced as that's just how good the idea for this film was as we get to see more of a man that we really don't know all that well with this films idea being such a good and solid idea that it makes you wonder why more documentary film don't do something more like this with the plot of this film also being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Guardians Of The Galaxy star Glenn Close and Good Night, and Good Luck star Jeff Daniels. Also starring in this film is Brooke Ellison , Gae Exton , Alexandra Reeve Givens , Sister Act star Whoopi Goldberg , Laurie Hawkins , Kevin Johnson , John Kerry , Steven Kirshblum , Michael Manganiello , Matthew Reeve , Will Reeve , Susan Sarandon and Superman , Superman 2 and Superman 3 producer Pierre Spengler.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the interviews that are actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual interviews that are actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With everyone in this film bringing something to this film that makes all of the interviews really worth watching with the interviews all having some very heartwarming moments as well as having moments that will make you cry like a baby with none of this films interviews really stepping on each other and saying the exact same things as each other which is something that is a very rare thing to find in any documentary as alot of them do have interviews where the people being interviewed not only cover the exact same thing but they also use alot of the exact same words which does make alot of those interview really pointless where as hear none of those happen and as a result of that is the fact that we audience are treated to alot of interviews that give us alot of insight to not only who Christopher Reeve was a man but also what he was thinking in the weeks and months after his fateful accident and that's also were we find out how he got the strength to carry on fighting the good fight when everything inside of him was telling to him to sit down and to give up and it's things like that that do make all of this interviews really worth watching.
This film does a really good job of showing us who Christopher Reeve was not only through newly recorded interviews but also through the use or archive interview as well. This is something that makes you wonder what he was really like on those days when he wasn't in the best of moods as we do get to find out in this film that he had his days after the accident when he was feeling quite angry with this film making great use of archival recordings by Christopher Reeve himself which only serves to make him come across as being more human and it makes the film feel all the more personal as well and as a result of that is the fact that we get to see a whole new side of the person that we've only heard stories about and seeing that he was this kind person who was basically a real life version of Superman does make you miss him all the more as there's no one like that alive today with this films documentary also making great of archival recordings from the likes of Richard Donner , Dana Reeve , F.D. Reeve and Robin Williams all of which make this film and it's subject matter seem all the more hopeful which makes it all the more tragic when you realise that everything that he set out to do after the accident like walking again will now never ever happen again and yet even with that in mind the film still manages to have it's hopeful that truly highlights just how hopeful of a person that Christopher Reeve really was as a person.
This film is exactly how Music By John Williams should have been as not only does this film give you alot of information by the person that there meant to be covering but it also has a really gut punching emotional hook to it. Which in this case is the death of Christopher Reeve which not only do they cover his death in it's entirety but you also see it from several points of view as all of his kids give details on what they they were doing when he fell into the coma that lead to his death with even his eldest son admitting that he was in a Taxi on his way to the hospital to see his dad when he got the call that he passed that right there is utterly heartbreaking and it's something that the Jim Henson documentary had as well as both films really did take the time to make you like whoever they were talking about and then right at the last minuet they pull you this gut punch that makes you see the whole film in a brand new light as you realise that everything that he said he would do like being able to walk again he was never ever able to do this is despite the fact that in the last few months of his life was able to move his finger and and get some feeling back into his legs again and yet even with that he still wasn't able to do the one thing that he's wanted to do since the mind nineties and that's stand up and walk something that we all take for granted every single day of our lives.
If there's anything negative go say about this film it's the fact that the film does jump around alot in the timeline. With the film going from before he did Superman in one scene and then the very next scene will about something that he did after Superman which is something that does make alot of sense as Christopher Reeve says himself in the film that when he was first lying there and getting his memories back after his accident that his memories came back to him in fractions but in the wrong order with this film being a good example of what it was that he went thought when he was first getting his memories back but at the same time tho it would have worked just fine if the film had a more linear timeline as that would then have the advantage of making you fall in love with Christopher Reeve just as well as the film already does and it would have allowed for the film to gave alot more light hearted moments with his friends and family something that could have been used in the film as the film does go to some really dark and emotional places in it's third act and it would have been helped if there was some more lighthearted moments in there just to send the audience of with a smile but the way that the film is done as it is also works really well as it lets you know what Christopher Reeve was going through and feeling both before and after he had his accident which is something that does work well enough to the films advantage even if it is something that really isn't needed in the slightest.
One of the things that this film does wonderfully is the fact that it goes to great lengths to show you just how close nit his family was and still is. With even the fact that his two youngest kids who have a different mother were never referred to as being half sisters and brother they were always just referred to us sister ad brother and the fact that they all spent alot of time together even when they didn't have to do so with pretty much all of them taking up horse riding as well and even taking over there mother and fathers foundation to help overs who were left paralyzed that is something that does go a great way to show you just how close all of them really were and how much that really cared for each other and wanted to help each other something that couldn't have been hard to do as they lost there mother not long after loosing there father and yet it;s there live that kept them going through thick and thin and while yes there might have been times when they were at each others throats at the end of the day they always came back to each other and it's that kind of love that is very rare to find and yet when you do see it in family members you don't get rid of it you do your best to keep that love going no matter what and that's something that they did even tho times would have been tough for them as loosing one parent would have been hard to do but then loosing the other as well it would have been for anyone and for any family no matter how close that they were to truly recover from that kind of a lose.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and forty four minuets and twenty two seconds. Which is a really solid running time for this film to have as even tho this film really doesn't have whole lot interms of plot to really cover that amount of running time the film more then makes up for it with it's amount of content as the whole does have so much content and so much to cover that you really don't notice and it's because of this longer running time that we get some interesting information from his time doing Superman like the fact that he was contractually obligated to make Superman 3 and because of that his heart just wasn't in it and the fact that he never really wanted to make Superman 4 in the first place something that does show through in the final products of those films and both of those are things that would have most likely have been cut out if the film really had a short running time as the film would have to rush to get it's huge emotional ending where we find out not only how Christopher Reeve died but also how is wife Dana did as well both of which are really emotional and only work because of the fact that the film has taken it's time to make both of them come across as being really likable people and people that even tho you know how there story ends you still want to see them make it out of the film alive and well but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is biography that means that I gave to actually biography that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual biography that's actually featu4red / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. As we get to find out some things that we never truly knew about the man himself like the fact that his love of horse riding came from the fact that he learned to ride a horse for real for a role in a film even tho he is allergic to horses he still went ahead and did it anyway something that really hasn't been talked about before now as was the fact that we find out how much pain and heartbreak he has going mentally when the first came round after his accident and the fact that the only thing that was keeping him going during those early days after the accident was the fact that his wife Dana said to him that he's still the man that she loves and that she loves him anyway and it was those words that kept him going when the only thing he wanted to do was to give up and that is the sign of just how good of man that he was as even tho he couldn't kick a ball with his kids or hug his wife anymore he could still be there for them in other ways and that's exactly what he did and that's that kind of love that really does make Christopher Reeve a real super man as that's just how good of a man that really was in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall go and watch this film right now as it really is just that good of a film but be warned as you will be needing a box of tissues as the ending of the film is just that heartbreaking and it's something that really does make this film more worth watching then what it already is in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 9.5 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from the official DC Database fandom wiki page , the official Disney fandom wiki page , IMP Awards .
