The Crow 1994 Film Review
There are a lot of really popular comic book movies out there with them all mostly being from either Marvel or DC. However that doesn't mean that there the only comic book movies out there either as alot of the time there are some little known comic book movies that are being made but they fly under the rader because of the fact that there not Marvel or DC and for a sad reason this film is not one of those films as while this film isn't a Marvel or DC film it is a really well known but not for the reason that you'd want and so then join me as I review the film also impacted a wrestler with the film in question being called simply just "The Crow" enjoy.
The plot of this film is one year after the death of both and his fiancé Eric Draven returns from the dead determined to get revenge on those that killed both him and his fiancé once and for all. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to s in this very film was in all honesty really good and was a lot better then what it really had any right to he as on paper this films plot really shouldn't have been as good as it was and yet for some reason the plot of this film was shockingly really well done and while yes granted this films plot really wasn't as good as the plot of other comic book films from around the same time period it also wasn't as bad as alot of the other really bad comic book movies plots from the same time period either as at the very least this films plot looked like that it actually respected both the original source material and the original characters something that can't be said for alot of really bad comic book movie plots with the plot of this film also being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Brandon Lee as Eric Draven / The Crow , Rochelle Davis as Sarah Mohr and Michael Wincott as Top Dollar. Also starring in this film is Bai Ling as Myca , Sofia Shinas as Shelly Webster , Anna Levine as Darla Mohr , David Patrick Kelly as T-Bird , Angel David as Skank , Laurence Mason as Tin Tin , Michael Massee as Funboy , Tony Todd as Grange , Jon Polito as Gideon , Bill Raymond as Mickey , Marco RodrĂguez as Detective Torres and Ernie Hudson as Sergeant Daryl Albrecht.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured presented to us un this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With actor Brandon Lee being the true stand out performer in this film as he's not just playing a character he IS Eric Draven with it being hard to imagine somebody else playing the role as he's just that good in the role in this film with the rest of this films actors turning in some really good performances as well with kid actor Rochelle Davis not only turning a good performance in this film but also kore then holding her own when it comes to acting against the films adult actors as well with the acting that's in this film really being helped by the fact that the script for this film is just o good that all this films cast ave to do is just say the lines as they are written and a good performance will come out of them naturally which is something that really help to raise the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
I think that it's safe to say that the reason as to why this film is so infamous is due to the fact that it's lead star Brandon Lee was shot and killed during the production of this film. With his death affecting the film in more ways then what we know as even tho Brandon Lee only had a few days left to finish filming with alot of his scenes having already being completed what wasn't finished was the opening of the film and while you can tell that it's not him doing it it's also a scene that works really well and while yes the actors death is hard to tell if it was an accident or not as the only ones who will know for sure are the ones who were there on the day of filming it does make you wonder why the production company sent the firearms expert home early as the gun that they used still had a fake round lodged in it's barrel and as a result of that is when however's job it was when the firearms expert isn't there to fill the gun up clearly had no idea what they were doing as they didn't remove the lodged fake round and clean the gun they just loaded the stuff that they needed in order to make it look like the gun actually fired a bullet and as a result of that is the fact that when the gun did fire it basically fired the fake round out and it had the impact of a real round of bullets all of which makes you wonder why the firearms expert was sent home earl in the first place.
Believe it or not this film actually does have somewhat of a positive legacy as well as a negative one as apart from spawning three sequels with only the first one getting a theatrical release. This film also spawned a TV series and was popular that it even made it's way into the realm of pro wrestling with pro wrestling donning a look that was inspired by this film and would become so well known for this look that it's now became the only look that the character of Sting will most likely ever don again all of this does go to show you just big that this film was even tho it wasn't a big hit at the box office it still somehow managed to find to a fanbase that is still going strong to this very day with alot of the films fans not really liking the idea of the upcoming reboot with the same thing also be said for this films director as well as this film just captures the imagination perfectly even tho it's an R rated comic book movie which back in the nineties would have been seen as nothing more then box office poison and yet because of how much heart was in the film and because of how weird and out there that the concept of the film is it still somehow managed to get a fan base and become a cult hit film.
Even tho this film is a really good film what really does let this film down by quite a bit is the films villain Top Dollar. As he just does nothing for the overall vast majority of this films running time with him spending alot of this film just being sat at a big table and talking to people and that's really it and that's not enough as we do't get to find out anything about his character at all and yet somehow we the audience are meant to find him threatening and creepy just because a few of the films characters are scared of him ad that's it and that's not how it works as we need to be given a reason to hate this character ad to want to see him dead and yet we don't get any of that and heck this villain doesn't have a clear end goal and as a result of that is the fact that he just comes across as being evil for the sake of being evil which wouldn't be a bad thing if he was presented as being insane like The Joker in The Dark Knight for example but he's not as instead he's meant to be a character that's the smartest person in the room and as a result of that is the fact that we should have been told what he's end goal is as that would then have the effect of making him at the vert least a somewhat interesting villain and it would give us a reason to want to see Eric Draven kill him once and for all.
One of this films key themes is death and dealing with the death of a loved one which really is a mature theme for what is basically a superhero film to tackle. As comic book movies even back then really didn't tackle such mature themes and yet here they are front and centre in this film and this film really does handle those themes and subject matters really well and as a result of that is the fact that we get a film that really is for adults as there themes that only adults could fully wrap there head around and it's how the film tackles these themes by not only through the character of Sarah but also the character of Eric Draven with both of them being on opposite sides of the death coin which does make interesting with Eric really wanting to die but can't because his soul isn't at piece due to how he died and that's something that really does drive him all throughout the film even to the point where he regains some of humanity and with Sarah we see it from the point of view of someone who really doesn't want to loose someone close to her again as she can't bare to go through that kind of pain again and yet it's due to both of there experiences in this film that they learn to accept that loosing someone doesn't mean that there gone forever in the case of Sarah and in the case of Eric it means finally being able to rest in piece.
Now then this film has / has an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and forty one minuets and fifty two seconds. Which is the absolutely perfect running time for this film to have as this film really does have more ten enough there interms of plot to really cover that amount of plot with every single scene in this film being needed to either advance the characters are own personal arcs or the plot of the film and while yes this film really could have done with being a few minuets longer as that allow the makers of this film more of a chance to fully develop it's characters a bit more then what they already do that would also end up with a film that has a bunch of fuller scenes as it would impossible to give this films characters are scenes where there characters can become more developed r due to the sheer nature of this film and as a result of that is the fact that this film really does have the absolutely perfect running time as there's no way to fix this films running time without going back to the scriptwriting stage of the film but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is a action film that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With this films action being one of the best parts about this film as the action in this film is just so cool to watch and while yes alot of it does boil down to who can shoot who the quickest first it's always fun to see the characters take part in these really over the top action sequences and have a really good soundtrack behind them which only does make the action the in this film all the mor better then what it already with the action in this very film being the films third as we get see just how powerful Eric Draven is something which has only been hinted at all through out the rest of the film and we also get to see him use his healing factor several points in this action which does make him seem like this unstoppable character who really is willing to do whatever it takes to get the revenge on those that killed both him and his fiancé which is just pure cool to see in this film in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall this film really was just such a cool film to see and it really is worth all of the hype that this film has gotten over the years as despite a few problems here and there it really is just that good of a film and now the remake has a big hill to climb as this film has such a rabid fanbase and only time will tell if the new film can live up to the legacy of this film but if history is going by judging by the sequels then the remake isn't going to be all that good of a film in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review ad as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly an 8 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from the official The Crow fandom wiki page , IMP Awards . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images really from this very film being the really great Google Images this is really because of the fact that really all of the images that I really indeed got and really used from the really great Google Images are all really high quality with all the images that are currently up and on the really great and the really solid Google Images really are all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
