School Of Rock Film Review
Even tho i've seen alot of films more then once over the years there's only a few films that i've seen exactly once. With the film that i'm about to talk to you about today being one such film as even tho I did see this film back in 2003 when it first came out i've never seen it since then and so then join me as I review the film that really did launch the career of one Miranda Cosgrove with the film in question being called simply just "School Of Rock" enjoy.
The plot of this film is guitarist Dewey Finn is kicked out of a band and has just a few weeks to put a new band together to get them to enter the annual battle of the bands competition. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good as it's a story that while it has been told a few times even by now this film does put enough of a spin on it by making the new band that Dewey forms by kids and that is something that does make the film not only feel fresh and different again but also it makes it timeless as well and that is something that does help the film stand the test of time and while yes there are some aspects of the films plot that could have been fixed like the fact the films plot does come across as being to child friendly when it should be alot more family friendly with the plot of this film also being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Jack Black as Dewey Finn , Joan Cusack as Rosalie "Roz" Mullins and this films writer Mike White as Ned Schneebly. Also starring in this film is Sarah Silverman as Patty Di Marco , Miranda Cosgrove as Summer Hathaway , Joey Gaydos Jr. as Zack Mooneyham , Kevin Clark as Freddy Jones , Rivkah Reyes as Katie , Robert Tsai as Lawrence , Maryam Hassan as Tomika , Aleisha Allen as Alicia , Caitlin Hale as Marta , Brian Falduto as Billy , Z Infante as Gordon , James Hosey as Marco , Angelo Massagli as Frankie , Cole Hawkins as Leonard , Jordan-Claire Green as Michelle , Veronica Afflerbach as Eleni , Adam Pascal as Theo , Lucas Babin as Spider , Lucas Papaelias as Neil , Chris Stack as Doug and Frank Whaley as The Battle Of The Bands Director.
Now the interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. Which is of no surprise as one of the many things that this film got alot of praise for was it's acting in particualr the acting of it's main star Jack Black who is not only the best performer in this film but is also a really good actor in not only in this film but in alot of his other films as well with another great performer in this film being oddly enough Miranda Cosgrove who is just a joy to watch and even from this film it's very easy to see that she had a good future ahead of her something which has thankfully come true with alot of this films young kid cast more the holding there own when it comes to them acting against the films more experienced older actors as well with even Sarah Silverman turning in a passable performance in this film as well with the acting in this film really being helped by the fact that the script for this film is just so good that al this films cast have to do is just say the lines as they are written and a good performance will come out of them naturally which is something that really does help to raise the overall quality of the acting that's in this film.
Rather surprisingly this film is over twenty years old and it really doesn't feel it as this film feels just as fresh today as it did twenty years ago. With this film not really aging at all as it looks like that it could have been made just this past year with the film also having a timelessness to it in the way of the fact that the songs that the fil. features aren't modern day pop songs they are genuinely classic rock songs that alot of people today still listen and this is something that wouldn't be present if the film was made today as the film would have a ton of pop songs in it that would date the film right away instead of going with classic rock songs that alot of people know already also helping with the fact that this film is alot older then it looks is the fact that the film isn't filled to the brim with cameos from people who only relevant today as instead the film has no cameos even tho the entire battle of the bands portion of the film really does open itself up to some cameos from some famous faces and yet the makers of this film chose not to go that route instead filling the film up with relative unknowns which was a really smart thin to do.
In what was a rather shocking move is the fact that Dewey is actually a really good teacher as even tho he doesn't teach the kids literally anything that would help them in the real world. He does take the time to help with there personal issues and to get to know them as people something that alot of teachers just won't do and it's something that the makers of this film didn't have to do and while it does seem against his character for him to be doing that as he's someone who is a slacker and who doesn't really know any better and as a result of that is the fact that he wouldn't be helping these kids out he would just be looking out for himself but also at the exact same time tho it could be argued him getting to know the kids and helping them out is also apart of his growth as a character which if that is the case really is something that does come out of nowhere as the film doesn't lead up to that it just happens and it is something that does come across as being rather jarring when it shouldn't be as it's a key part of the films plot.
What is something that does bog the film is the drama between Dewey , Ned and Patty Di Marco as there drama doesn't add anything to the plot of the film. With there drama just being there for the sake of being there and not because of the fact that it adds anything to the overall plot with the only dramatic scene that the three have that actually advance the plot is the first one when there talking about the rent and that's really it and while Ned and Dewey do have another showdown near the end of the film does add something to the plot Patty isn't in that scene which is a shame because her character is the kind of the character that would say "I told you so" to someone and is kind of a b*tch and as a result of that is the fact that she would have been involved with the second drama scene that Ned and Dewey have and yet for some strange reason she's not in it this is made even more worse when you take into account that her character really is pointless in the grand scheme of things as even tho she adds something to Ned's own personal character arc she adds nothing to the overall plot of the film and is there just so the fact can have a secondary antagonist and that's really it.
While this film is a hugely entertaining for the most part there are portions of the film that aren't as entertaining as they really could have been. Like a lot of stuff at the school especially the school cafeteria just aren't that entertaining with the same thing also being true for the first batch of battle of the bands scenes which while you couldn't cut those scenes especially the first batch of battle of bands scenes there could have been some effort into making those scenes more entertaining either by adding a few more jokes or just by being more fun and yet as things stand those are the more boring scenes in the film and while yes the film does have alot of scenes that on paper could have been boring like alot of stuff in the classroom those scenes aren't that boring as we get to see the characters having fun and being fun characters where as with the cafeteria and the first battle of the bands scenes all we get is the characters trying to hard to be fun instead of just being themselves with this not being helped by the fact that it's during those first battle of the bands of the scenes where they do really lay on the drama with the kids which just falls flat and doesn't really work at all.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and forty nine minuets and sixteen seconds. Which is a bit on the long side for a film like this with this being made even more worse when you take into account that this film really doesn't have alot there interms of plot to really cover that large amount of running as the film really does have just the right amount of plot for at the very least one hour and thirty minuets and as a result of that is the fact that the films plot really does feel like it's being stretched even thinner then what it already with this being something that really does effect the film when the film gets into it's second act as there alot of scenes in that second act really could have been removed completely as that would help the film flow alot more better then what it actually does and while yes alot of the stuff that's in this films second act is important to the plot of the film alot of it is just there for the sake of being there with a chief example of that being the fact that alot of the school cafeteria stuff didn't need to be in the film as did the band that kicked Dewey out at the start of the film as they straight up disappear from the film and only turn up at the end of the film having added nothing to the overall plot of the film but I will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this film is a comedy that means that I have to actually talk about the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With Jack Black rather rightfully getting alot of this films best jokes and alot of this films humor does come from his really over the top facial expressions which will never ever fail to get a laugh out of anyone and while yes alot of this films jokes don't land those jokes really are very few and far between with the film having alot of really painfully moments in it with one of the best jokes in the whole coming in the scene where Dewey is forced to teach math in the form of a song and yet one of his students straight up corrects him when he gets the question wrong forcing him to act like it was all a test which is really painfully funny joke with the film having alot of jokes that like that and when the film does tell a joke that lands it really does land and land hard in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall this film really was just as good as it was back in 2003 and it's not hard to see why alot of people really do like this film as there are alot of things to like about this film and while Jack Black is currently developing not only a direct sequel to this film but he is also really developing another Tenacious D film as well but tho this film really doesn't need a sequel as it's a film that really does lend itself to really just being a one and done film in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly an 8 out 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the mages that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from IMP Awards . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images this film being the really great Google Images this is really because of the fact that really all of the images that I really got and used from Google Images are all really high quality with all the images that are currently up and on the great Google Images are all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
