Mannequin 1987 Film Review
Romance films seems to be a genre where anything and everything can happen as long as there's a romance in it. Case in point the film that i'm about to review for you all today as the film that i'm about to review for you all today is an idea that just so strange , weird and odd that on paper it really just shouldn't work and yet it somehow really does and so then join me as I review the film that wouldn't be out of place in today's culture with the with the film in question being called simply just "Mannequin" enjoy.
The plot of this film is when sculptor Jonathan Switcher accidentally makes a mannequin that come to life he finds himself falling in love with the mannequin. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad but at the same time tho the plot of this film wasn't all that good either with the plot of the film being at best just nothing more then average as outside of the whole mannequin coming to life aspect of the film there's nothing all that new and different about the films plot with the plot of the film instead relying on tired tropes to make it through it's running time instead of giving us a plot that is actually heartwarming with the plot of the film also being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Andrew McCarthy as Jonathan Switcher and Kim Cattrall as Ema "Emmy" Hesire. Also starring in this film is Estelle Getty as Claire Timkin , James Spader as Mr. Richards , G. W. Bailey as Captain Felix Maxwell , Meshach Taylor as Hollywood Montrose , Carole Davis as Roxie Shield , Steve Vinovich as B.J. Wert , Christopher Maher as Armand and Andrew Hill Newman as The Compactor Room Janitor.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. However that's also the problem as the acting in this film isn't all that good as while the films cast are quite clearly trying to turn in a good performance thanks to the films director and co-writer Michael Gottlieb not being able to direct his cast this films cast and as result of this is the fact is this films cast come across as being lost when we know that some of this films cast can turn in a good performance and are a bunch of really good actors and yet for some reason in this film they just can't deliver that good of a performance with the acting in this film not really being helped by the fact that the script for this film really is just so bad as it gives all of this films cast absolutely nothing to work with interms of what it is that there respective characters personalities are even meant to be and that is something that really does bring down the overall quality of the acting that's in this film.
To give this film sort of credit it does try to give us some actually likable main characters which does have the add on effect of making the romance seem better because of it. As this films romance really does relay on both of it's main characters being really likable characters which is thankfully the case with this film and as a result of that is the fact that you want to see these characters end up together as we the audience get to see what one of them goes through before the mannequin comes to life and we get to see just how bad his life is with his life being at best unfulfilled despite his best efforts to do a good job and yet when the mannequin does come to life things start to get better for both characters with both characters ultimately getting what they wanted all along and that's each other and that's something that really does work in this film because of the fact the main characters in this film are extremely likable characters that we the audience want to see succeed and end up with there happily evert after.
To be frank the idea behind this film is just so insane that on paper it really shouldn't work as it requires your audience to suspend so much of there disbelief. As the very idea of someone falling in love with shop mannequin is just a very insane idea and yet because of the fact that the shows two main leads aren't that well known and the characters themselves are that likable you do kind of by into the idea and while yes it can be seen as being creepy as the very idea of a man falling in love with a mannequin is just that strange of an idea due to the fact that we the audience are given the time needed to get to know both of these characters the idea itself does come across as being something that could work and yet it's only an idea that could only work with this director and co-writer and these two leads as there the ones that know the characters the best and when your trying to your audience to want buy into this idea you want to make the characters likable and because of the fact that these characters are really likable it means that this insane idea does somehow work because of it.
While there are some things that do make sense there is one thing that doesn't make sense as for some strange reason Emmy only turns into a real person when around Jonathan and Jonathan only. With there being no reason as to why she can't turn into a real person infront of other people this doesn't start of an issue but it does become an issue when it comes to the films third act as Emmy is almost killed something which could have been prevented if she came to life and walked down the ramp that she was on something that she could have done as the person who put her there had been knocked out during the third act and yet for some reason she just stays in her mannequin form which creates pointless tension as it's painfully obvious that Jonathan is going to save her and as a result of that all we the audience are doing is waiting to see what we already know will happen actually happen and it's something that come have been avoided if Emmy just came to life and got her self of the compactor and yet for some unknown reason she just doesn't do it which make absolutely no sense whatsoever.
As a romance this film does fair a little bit better as the romance in this film is extremely believable and really well done. This is due to the fact that the film spends alot of time developing it's main characters and as a result of that it is extremely believable that these two characters would end up together and while the film would have been much more better if the romance was given a bit more of a focus then what we actually got in this film given the amount of time that the relationship does get in this film it does come across as being really fully developed as it could have been with the films romance being the best part of the film as it is something that is the best written and best acted aspect of the film and as a result of that is the fact that this relationship is really sweet as it's something that we the audience want to see happen and it's something that we audience want to see succeed due to how well written this films romance really is with the romance in this film being a better example of how to do a romantic film.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and thirty minuets and twenty four seconds. Which is pretty much the exact running time that a film like this one really should have and to this films credit it really does have the right amount of plot there to really cover that large amount of running time and while some aspects of the films plot could have been dropped like the whole subplot of a rival store trying to take Emmy could have been dropped just so the film could focus more on the relationship but at the same time tho if the film did do that then it would also cause the films third act to loose any stakes with the film then just coming to a stop and not stopping naturally with the film making the most of it's running time as the film really did have alot to do with it's running time as it had to set up this supernatural element , set up the romance and still tell a good story and while the film did manage to do all of that with it's running time the film really could have benefitted from being at the vert least ten minuets longer but I will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is a comedy that really does mean that I gave to actually talk about the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really bad for the most part. As for the most part this film really doesn't have that many actually funny jokes in it with the very few funny jokes that the film has not being funny on there own but only come across as being funny as there only slightly better then alot of this films bad jokes with the film instead focusing more on it's romance aspect when the balance of this romantic comedy should have been fifty fifty with there being just as much focus on the comedy then there is on the romance part of the film and yet because there not alot of focus on comedy we get a very uneven film in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall this was a really good film that does deserve all of the praise that it got but at the same time it's film that had the potential to be so much more better then what it ended up being all it needed was a better writer and director to make the film as good as it really could have been in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 7 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from IMP Awards . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images this film being the really great Google Images this is because really all of the images that I really got and used from Google Images are all really high quality with all the images that are currently up and on the great Google Images are all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
