Small Soldiers Film Review
With the new Barbie movie just about to be released I think that i've found what is oddly the perfect film to review to tie into that movie. It also helps that I really haven't seen this film since the late nineties and have been trying to mount a review of this film for some time now and well with the Barbie movie just around the corner and this film featuring a bunch of Barbie knock off dolls the timing just couldn't be better for this review to come out and so then join me as I review the film that i'm willing to bet alot of people have forgotten about with the film in question being called simply just "Small Soldiers" enjoy.
The plot of this film is when a toy designer puts in a military grade micro processing chip into two action figure sets it's up to an eleven year old boy to stop the two warring toy factions before it's far to late. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty dumb but really rather enjoyably dumb as well as being entertaing and engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Kirsten Dunst as Christy Fimple , Gregory Smith as Alan Abernathy and Jay Mohr as Larry Benson. Also starring in this film is the late Phil Hartman as Phil Fimple , Kevin Dunn as Stuart Abernathy , Denis Leary as Gil Mars , Ann Magnuson as Irene Abernathy , David Cross as Irwin Wayfair , Frank Langella as The Voice Of Archer , Christopher Guest as The Voice Of Slamfist , Michael McKean as The Voice Of Insaniac , Harry Shearer as The Voice Of Punch-It , Tommy Lee Jones as The Voice Of Major Chip Hazard , George Kennedy as The Voice Of Brick Bazooka , Jim Brown as The Voice Of Butch Meathook , Ernest Borgnine as The Voice Of Kip Killigan , the late Clint Walker as The Voice Of Nick Nitro , Bruce Dern as The Voice Of Link Static and Jim Cummings as The Voice Of Ocula.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty alot better then what I remember it being. Granted the last time I saw this film was in the late nineties but the acting that we got in this film was really good with all of this films cast members turning in some rather solid performances.
Doing the CGI for this film is the true legends and the greats that currently over at Industrial Light & Magic. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty alot better then what it really had any right to be with this films CGI more then holding up really well almost thirty years later.
To me this film is a dark and twisted version of Toy Story which given that this film was co-distributed by Dreamworks that really isn't all that surprising as alot of their early Dreamworks Animation stuff would more often then naught bare a striking resemblance to PIXAR films. Heck this film even has it's Barbie dolls characters much like Toy Story 2 but unlike the Toy Story films this film doesn't really have the heart that would make all of those more darker moments hit all the more harder then what they do.
I can see why this film has been forgotten as outside of the two toy factions fighting each other there's nothing that really makes this film stand out. Which is a shame because this films director Joe Dante is known for making films that stand out in some way shape or form but I will admit that even tho this film is a kids film there are alot of scenes in this film that will straight up scare alot of little kids all of which means that this film more then earns it's PG-13 rating and that's something that you just don't see in alot in alot of the PG rated films that are being made and then released these days.
This films comedy is the films weakest aspect for me as this films comedy just isn't all that funny for the most part. With the comedy in this film being mostly made up of bad puns and pop culture references which is fine for one or two jokes but when alot of your comedy is just bad puns and pop culture references then there's something quite clearly wrong with your comedy in this film which is a shame because when this film does tell a funny joke it is a really funny joke but you have to sit through alot of really bad jokes just to get to one or two good joke tho.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and forty nine minuets and forty seven seconds. Which is a tad bit on he long side for this film even more so when you take into account that the film really doesn't have a whole lot of story there to cover that large amount of running time and as such the film does feel a bit boring at times as the film does feature alot of scenes that go nowhere and add nothing to the overall plot of the film but I will admit tho that this film does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is an action film that means that I have to actually talk about the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty the most fun part of the film. As the films really does take full advantage of the fact that these two warring factions are just toys and that does make this films action scenes all the more really inventive and just really pure fun to see and to look at as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall this film was alot worse then what I remember it being in most aspects but when this film gets it right it really does get it right with this film being a really fun film to see in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that means that this very film earns itself a grand old score of exactly a 6 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from the official PIXAR fandom wiki page , the official Barbie fandom wiki page , IMP Awards . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images from this very film being obviously Google Images since really alot of this films images that are really from this very film and that are all currently still up and on Google Images are all really fairly freaking high in quality and as well as them all really being really fairly freaking high in definition.
