Kong: Skull Island Review

Godzilla fans yesterday you saw me review the film that started the Monsterverse well now your going to see me review the second film in the Monsterverse. Just like with the 2914 Godzilla film which for those that don't remember was simply called Godzilla) i've only ever seen this film that once and that was back when the film was first released in 2017 and so join me as I review "Kong: Skull Island" enjoy.

The plot of this film is a team of scientists , Vietnam War soldiers and photographer travel to Skull Island once their they find themselves separated when they are attacked by a giant ape and so both groups have to find each other and escape Skull Island. In all honesty I like that they didn't do the typical King Kong plot with this film simply because it gives us something new with this iconic character and it helps that the story in my opinion at least is really well told and the fact that the story actually focuses on Kong and doesn't waste time setting up for future movies is in my opinion a huge freaking plus.

Starring in the film is Loki actor Tom Hiddleston as James Conrad , Nick Fury actor and all around bada*s Samuel L. Jackson as Preston Packard and John Goodman as Bill Randa. Also starring in the film is Captain Marvel herself Brie Larson as Mason Weaver , Jing Tian as San Lin , Toby Kebbell as Jack Chapman and King Kong , John Ortiz as Victor Nieves , Corey Hawkins as Houston Brooks , Jason Mitchell as Glenn Mills , Shea Whigham as Earl Cole , Thomas Mann as Reg Slivko , John C. Reilly as Hank Marlow and Terry Notary also as King Kong.

In all honesty the acting in this film is alot better then what I remember it being and for me at least is a good thing since like I said at the start of the review i've only seen this film once and so watching it again it was like I was seeing the film for the first time all over again. As for what I thought about the acting in this film all of the actors did a really good job with a special shout out going to Brie Larson who proves in this film that she's not an emotionless robot and that she can actually act very well it's just a shame none of that talent was shown in the first solo Captain Marvel film which for those that don't recall was simply called Captain Marvel.

Doing the CGI for this film are Industrial Light & Magic , Hybride Technologies , Rodeo FX , fx3x , Virtuos , Scanline VFX and Halon Entertainment. In all honesty the CGI in this film was alot better then it really had any right to be since the story for this film could be seen as cheesy as such no one would have blamed the makers of this film if they chose to have bad CGI in this film but no all of the effects in this film honestly look really good.

What was truly shocking at least to me is how well done the CGI is on the water since anyone who has seen a behind the scenes documentary or a behind the scenes featurette on a movie of TV show that  features CGI water will know that creating realistic looking and acting water in CGI is always hard work. As such I was shocked to see not only how good the water looked in this film but also how well the water acted when Kong was interacting with it since the CGI water in this film not only looks how water should look but the CGI water in this film also acts how water would act as well.

Now then i've given this film alot of praise but it does some faults as well like for example the human characters are a very thinly drawn. I know that this is going to sound a bit rich coming from a Godzilla but the characters in this film (which incase you've forgotten is called Kong: Skull Island) are best very thinly drawn out characters since we don't get to find out anything about the characters whatsoever as such the characters just feel like architypes and not like actual characters.

This film has a running time of one hour and fifty eight minuets and twenty three seconds long which for me at least is a bit on the long side. Simply because this film doesn't have enough story to cover that running time as such since the story is rather simple I feel that this film could have told its story in at least an hour and a half and all you'd have to loose is perhaps the opening in Washington DC and that's really it.

From what I can gather the Monsterverse seems to be taking the same approach as the Marvel Cinematic Universe. By that I mean while the main film won't set things up for future movies they will have a post credits scene or scenes that will be used to set up future movies which I think is a great way to go about things since it means that you can tell the story that you want to tell in the main film and then after the credits you can include a little tease for the fans and by the way I highly suggest that you stick around until the very end of this film since you might hear a familiar sound if you exactly what i'm saying.

Now then boys and girls since this is an action film that means that I have to talk about the action that's in the actual film itself. In my opinion the action in this film is honestly really good with their being plenty of action sequences which for a monster movie is also a good thing in my eyes and it helps that unlike the 2014 Godzilla (which again was called simply Godzilla) in this film (which again is called Kong: Skull Island) we actually get to see the action and the action is honestly not really good but when it wants to be can really creative and honestly fun to watch.

Overall this is honestly a really freaking good and a really fun film in my honest and humble opinion and it's honestly in my opinion at least one of the better films set in the Monsterverse. However this film does have some bad things in it which i've covered in this review and even tho the film does have some good things in the film as well which like the bad things in the film i've also covered the good things that are in this film in this very review as such this film gets a 6.5 out of 10 from me , as for where I got the images that I used in this review well I got them from the official Godzilla fandom wiki page (which for those that don't know is called Gojipedia) and Google Images and for once I really cannot say which would be the best website to use if you want to use images from this film since even tho the official Godzilla fandom wiki page (which again is called Gojipedia) has more high definition images Google Images on the other hand has more of a verity when it comes to images from this film (which again is called Kong: Skull Island) so I say use which ever website you guys want to use and with that i've officially reviewed every single film in the Monsterverse with my next Monsterverse film review being Godzilla Vs Kong which is out March 26th 2021 on HBO Max and in theaters so i'll see you Godzilla then.
