Magic Camp Review
Disney fans since there are very little new films being released I think that it's great that Disney is putting films that were due to be theatrically released on Disney+. I mention this because after years of waiting Disney just released another new movie and it honestly looks like that's going to be the same for at ;east the next few weeks because next wee sees the release of The One And Only Ivan the week after that will hopefully see the release of The new Mutants and the week after that sees the release of the live action remake of Mulan and so join my as I review "Magic Camp" enjoy guys and girls and everyone inbetween.
The plot of the movie is a down on his luck magician is tasked by his mentor to teach a bunch of kids at a camp for young magician's. If i'm being honest the plot is the first thing wrong with the film since outside of what I just described there's no real plot to the film if anything what I just described could be considered the premise to the film and not it's actual story which is a shame because the idea behind the film is somewhat interesting.
Starring in the film is Adam DeVine as Andy Tuckerman , Jeffrey Tambor as Roy Preston and Gillian Jacobs as Christina Darkwood. Also starring in the film is Nathaniel McIntyre as Theo Moses , Cole Sand as Nathan Jenkins , Isabella Cramp as Ruth Brusselbach , J.J. Totah as Judd Kessler , Izabella Alvarez as Vera Costa , Hayden Crawford as Vic , Bianca Grava as Janelle Santos , Aldis Hodge as Devin Moses and Rochelle Aytes as Zoe Moses.
The acting in the film is honestly one of the films better aspects which given how lame everything else is isn't a high bar to reach. The adult actors are trying there best to make the script work but the lack of story and the lack of character really doesn't help them out and the same goes for the child actors who the film's credit aren't as annoying as they perhaps could have been which is honestly a really good thing.
Now this film was filmed in 2017 and was due to be released in 2018 but it was pulled from a theatrical release in 2018 in order to be released in Disney+. This means we are watching three year old footage why they chose to delay the film's release is truly beyond me since the film doesn't have any big effects and there's nothing that would require the film being delayed and if the plan was to always put it on Disney+ then why did they wait until almost a year after the service launched to put the film up on there.
I can honestly see this film doing well on Disney + because of two reasons the first of which being the fact that there's barely any new films being released the second of which is the fact that it's a Disney film. Both of these reasons lead me to believe that this film is going to do rather well on Disney+ and that Disney made a great call putting on there since if this film did get released when it was meant it would been lost in a sea of big screen films where as here it has a chance to at least be seen by a few more people.
This is something that alot of people pointed out when the trailer for the film dropped a few days ago but Adam DeVine sounds like he's doing a Jack Black impression. Which I honestly didn't mind at all but it made me wonder if Jack Black would have been a better choice for this film since everything Adam DeVine's character is is pretty much all of Jack Black's best known characters rolled into one.
Another thing that alot of people who watched the trailer pointed out is that this film feels like Camp Rock. Which yeah I kind of agree it does have that Camp Rock vibe to it which does make the film loose a little bit of it's identity since its something that you've seen done before but with rock swapped out for magic but at the same time you could compare this to any film set at a summer camp and it would make just as much sense.
This film has a running time of an hour and thirty seven minuets which is honestly about ten minuets longer then this film really does need to be. I say that because there's no story at all so you don't really need it to be those extra ten minuets you could just get close to ninety minuets and walk away but due to the fact that the film thinks it's alot deeper then what it actually is they added ten extra minuets which add nothing to the overall film they are there just to pad out the running time and that's it which isn't good enough.
On top of that the film is predictable as all hell so you know where the film is going pretty much straight away. This makes the film boring since you already know how the main plot is going play out the exact way you think it's going to and so when those plot points are hit there not really that surprising or shocking because you called out those plot points an hour before the film actually got to them , the fact that it's predictable also makes the film feel boring in my opinion.
Now then boys and girls since this is a comedy that does mean that we have to talk about the jokes that are in the film itself. Which i'm not going to lie is one of the film's more stronger aspects not due to anything that is said but due to how well the actors both kids and adults perform them which honestly made what could have been unfunny jokes get a smile out of me which for me is a very rare thing to happen.
Overall I can't say that this film is bad since I do think that very little kids will get alot more out of it then perhaps teenagers or adults will. However that doesn't excuse alot of the films weaker moments since even films made with little kids in mind should still be good films but with that being said there are still some good things about this film there's just not that many of them as such this film gets a 5 out of 10 from me.
All images that I used in this review were gathered from either the official Disney fandom wiki page or Google Images. I honestly can't really recommend either site this time since the only image I could get of the Disney fandom wiki page was the poster and the ones of Google Images varied in quality a such I have to say use either website if you want because chances are your going to find some high definition images just not that many.
