The Old Guard Film Review

Ladies and gents today I present to you something that is very rare these days and that is a new comic book movie. My god it's been quite a while since we've had a new comic book movie and well like alot of you I was just so eager to watch one that it really didn't matter what studio or comic book company it was from luckily tho this is where Netflix comes in because they just released a new comic book movie a few days ago and so here is my review of "The Old Guard" enjoy.

The plot of the movie is a bunch of people who cannot die find themselves being hunted by pharmaceutical company who want to use harness there powers for there own finical gains. In terms of what I thought of the plot it's pretty much your standard action plot with the only new thing being that the heroes can't die but apart from that there's really nothing new added in with the plot instead relying on old tropes and ideas to keep it moving.

Starring in the film is Charlize Theron as Andy / Andromache of Scythia and KiKi Layne as Nile Freeman. Also starring in the film is former Harry Potter star Harry Melling as Merrick , Matthias Schoenaerts as Booker / Sebastian Le Livre , Marwan Kenzari as Joe / Yusuf Al-Kaysani , Luca Marinelli as Nicky / Nicolo Di Genova , Chiwetel Ejiofor as Copley , Veronica Ngo as Quynh , Anamaria Marinca as Dr. Meta Kozak and Joey Ansah as Keane.

As for what I thought about the acting in the film given that I had no idea what to expect from the film i'd have to say that the acting is alot better then what I thought it was going to be. Which given that the vast majority of the actors in the film are unknown or very little known actors that is truly surprising but I will say that the actors that you expect a great performance do indeed deliver really freaking solid performances.

The film is based on the 2017 comic book of the same name which was published by Image Comics and was written by Greg Rucka who also wrote the screenplay for this film adaptation. I want it known that i've never read or even heard of the comic book and so I have no idea how true to the comic the film film is but given that the writer of the comic book also wrote this movie I have to assume that the movie is true to the comic book.

Given that it's been months since we've had a new comic book movie good or bad i'm honestly glad that this one came out just so there was something to tide us over until they start being released again. I honestly do think that it was a bold move on the part of both Netflix and Skydance to pick a very little known comic book since they could have got more media attention if they turned something more popular and more well known into a movie but by going with this it means that no one was keeping an eye on the film and so it could be made basically in secret.

Like I said this film does rely on tired cliche's like the fact that the new recruit meets the old grizzled veteran. Which has been done so many time that you know exactly how it's going to play out and yes it goes exactly where you think that it's going to go with that plot line and there are others that I can't talk about because there spoilers and I want to keep this review as spoiler free as possible but trust me when I say then there not really needed in this film and that the film, would have been better if there's cliche's weren't present at all.

There are some pacing issues with the film which make the film feel alot longer then it's two hour and five minuet running time. Which for me is a big issue because this film does rely on cliche's and so with a film this long seeing those cliche's play out makes the film feel boring which is anything but the case since when it gets entertaining the film can indeed be pretty fun to watch it's just a shame that the vast majority of the film can be pretty boring.

Let's talk about the villain of the film which sadly I cannot tell you anything about this character because of spoilers so you'll just have to trust me when I say that this villain is pretty weak. I honestly feel that since the film does something that alot of modern Disney animated films do then they should have made the main villain more interesting then one of the characters which is sadly something that they fail to do as such the villain comes of as someone who is boring to watch which is something that should never be the case.

Now then boys and girls since this is an action film and that does mean that we have to talk about the action that's in the film itself. Which while it can be exciting to watch it lacks any suspense due to the fact that the heroes can't die as such you know that the characters are going to make it ok and that makes the action seem boring and dull which is never a good thing in fact the only thing that keeps the action exciting is the fact that we get to see star and producer Charlize Theron being a bada*s which is always fun to watch.

Overall while it is indeed good to have a new comic book movie out it's just a shame that it's one that's pretty bad. Yes there are some god thing that are in this film but those good things get quickly overshadowed by the bad which is a shame because when the film does do something good it makes the film more interesting and entertaining to watch as such the film gets a 6 out of from me and yes the above picture is a clue as to my next review.

All images used in this review were gathered from either the official Netflix fandom wiki page , Goggle Images or the official Batman fandom wiki page. I really do wish I had a way to make this more interesting but the fact is I can't keep thinking up ways to make this part of the the review more interesting so i'll just say if you don't want to use either of these websites for there high quality images then i'll make you watch Captain Marvel.
