Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest Review
Disney fans incase you don't know a few times during the past few month's i'd do a review of entire film series and well I thought i'd do the same again however since I only own two of the films and have no interest in owning or watching the rest of the films both good and bad. Simply because to me these movies are the same and so over the next few days i'll be reviewing both the second and third films in this franchise and so here is my review of "Pirates Of The Caribbean Dead Man's Chest" so enjoy film fans and Disney fans alike.
The plot of the film is Will is tasked with looking for Jack in order to get his compass and should he do that both he and Elizabeth will be freed of the charges of helping a pirate as for Jack tho he has to deal with Davy Jones and has try to find a way to stop him before Jones gets Jack. In terms of what I thought about the plot it's a mess due to the fact that there are so many plots all fighting for space and the main plot with Will and Elizabeth goes nowhere in both this film and if I remember right the next film as well but I could be wrong.
Starring in the film is franchise star Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow and Orlando Bloom as Will Turner. Also starring in the film is Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Swann , Bill Nighy as Davy Jones , Jack Davenport as James Norrington , Tom Hollander as Lord Cutler Beckett , Stellan Skarsgård as "Bootstrap Bill" Turner , Kevin McNally as Joshamee Gibbs , Lee Arenberg as Pintel , Mackenzie Crook as Ragetti and Naomie Harris as Tia Dalma.
The acting in the film I thought was honestly very good which given not only who's in the film but also who's making the film shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. Johnny can pretty much play Captain Jack in his sleep because he's that good in this film to me he is the only actor who should ever play this role when it comes to live action because he has left that much of an impression on not only me but also the people who grew up with this franchise.
Now since i'm reviewing both of these sequels i'm not going to say who did the CGI because it would be the same for both films nor am I going to giver you my thoughts on the CGI because i'm going to do that in the next review. Without going into that much detail I will say that i liked the fact that the film used a mixture of CGI and practical effects since that to me makes the CGI effects look better but the overall quality of the CGI is still good.
For those of you that don't know both this film and At World's End where shot back to back and the first film The Curse Of The Black Pearl was never meant to have any sequels. As such writers Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio had to come up with two sets of stories that made it seem like the whole plan was for there to be three Pirates films which yeah they didn't succeed in doing whatsoever in my opinion because of the fact that the story of the first film from what I remember is all tied up at the end with no room for more story and so for them to try and get more story out of it would be freaking impossible to do.
This film introduces a slew of new characters and sadly due the film's running time we don't get to fully explore them that much. By that I mean because the film is so long we spend so much time with Jack and friends which honestly isn't needed because we already know those characters but we don't know characters like Davy Jones for example who yes does get some backstory in the next film but by then it's two little to late as such we aren't given a chance to care for them.
The fact that we knew going into this film that there was going to be a third film to me made the film feel predictable. Simply due to the fact that we now know that something big is going to happen to get us to watch the third film and that alot of the main cast will make it out of the second film alive because we knew that all of the cast had signed on for both sequels this is nothing that Disney or the makers of the film could have helped but it was a bit of an issue for me personally.
As with any film that has a guaranteed sequel this film is nothing but set up for the next film which for me is a huge issue because any of the storylines in this film don;t get payed off. Which given that the film is nearly two and a half hours long and alot of that is spent with characters talking you'd think that the makers of the film would put in some effort into resolving the plotlines exclusive to this film but no they don't and they don;t do it in the next film either.
The running time for the film is just freaking insane there is no way in hell that this film should have been anywhere near two and a half hours long. If anything this film should have been alot closer to two hours because realistically that's all you need to tell this story you don't need any longer then two hours and fifteen minuets so they chose to make the film nearly two and a half hours is something that is freaking beyond me.
Now then boys and girls since this is an action franchise that does mean that I have to talk about the action in the film. Which I honestly feel is one of the better things about the film simply due to how entertaining they are and the fact that there's a mixture if serious action scenes as well as ones that serve to advance the plot and a good dose of comedy action all of which make the action in this film really entertaining to watch with perhaps being the best action sequence being the one with three male characters in the mill sword fighting which gives us a good dose of what I said since it's serious , it advances the plot of the film and there;s a good dose comedy thrown in.
Overall while this film feels so freaking long and has alot of plot lines that go nowhere it is still an entertaining film. I will always admit that these two sequels have alot issues but being dull isn't one of them what brings these sequels down is the fact that they had to make a story that was all wrapped up in a nice a little bow (again from what I remember I haven't seen the first movie in nearly twenty years so yeah) seem like it was part of something as such this film gets a 7.5 out of 10 from me.
