Tinker Bell 2008 Film Review

Disney fans the company has many franchises under it's belt from the MCU to Star Wars but there's one franchise that people might not even know about and that's the Disney Fairies franchise. I'm not making that up either they really have a franchise built around fairies or should I say fairy because every film , book , game and TV special is based around the same character and i'm going to look at the first film in this franchise 2008's Tinker Bell.

Now here I would normally tell you what the plot of the movie however the movie decided to do me a favour and not include a plot. I really do wish I was joking but i'm not there is no plot to this movie and the only small hint of a story they do get happens right at the end which is a shame because that bit of the film could very easily have hit the run time of this movie and it actually would have made for a decent movie because of it.

Starring in the film is Mae Whitman as Tinker Bell , Kristin Chenoweth as Rosetta , Raven-SymonĂ© as Iridessa , Lucy Liu as Silvermist , America Ferrera as Fawn , Jane Horrocks as Fairy Mary , Jesse McCartney as Terence , Jeff Bennett as Clank , Rob Paulsen as Bobble , Pamela Adlon as Vidia , Anjelica Huston as Queen Clarion , Loreena McKennitt as The Narrator and America Young as Wendy Darling.

Now I want you all to know that i've not seen any film in this franchise all the way through and so I had no idea what to expect acting wise. So I wasn't really that shocked when it turned the acting was average at best while the actors are clearly trying to put in a decent performance what really let's them down is the script which gives them nothing to work with and that in turn hurts the performances.

The animation for the film was handled by Prana Studios who infamously worked on the terrible animated feature Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return. So yeah knowing that they worked on Legends Of Oz you can pretty much have an idea of what quality the animation is in this film because yeah it's not that good I would say it's not even straight to DVD movie but that would be an insult to badly animated straight to DVD movies.

Heck the above picture which isn't from a video game is from the actual movie heck i've seen video games with better graphics then this film. I know that this film is made for little kids but that doesn't mean that the people animating it should be let off if anything that means I should double down on them because kids deserve better animation in there animated movies and the fact that someone over at DisneyToon Studios gave this animation the OK is freaking bad.

For those of you who have wanted to see Tinker Bell naked well you kind of get your wish and I say kind off because you only see her back but it counts god damn it. All jokes aside it was cool seeing how she got her dress but given that this is set in Never Land I kind of expected it to be more magical instead all she does is pick up a pair of scissors and starts cutting which don't get me wrong is a fine way to show of her talent for fixing things but it's a fantasy land and so I want something more magical.

One of the biggest issues that I have with the film is the fact that if you take out the end credits it's barely an hour and ten minuets long and within that time frame you have to introduce the main character , the supporting characters , any villains for the film , the world the film is set in and have a plot. That is something you cannot do with this short running time this film needed to be at least an hour and forty minuets without the end credits but because it's not it means that something's going to suffer and in this case it was the story or should I say lack there of.

The other major issue that I have with the film is the fact that it's prequel and not just a prequel but one that doesn't take advantage to give us a true representation of the character. Tinker Bell in the original book is a fairy who had a nasty side she would get jealous and she even tried to kill Wendy now while you can't have a character try and kill someone here you can at least plant the seeds for things like her jealous streak and her nasty side.

Disney's version of Peter Pan gave us a pretty close representation of the character of the books only because it's Disney they made her more kid friendly which makes sense. So how cool would it have been to see where those sides of the character came from like you could have a scene where she manipulates someone to get what she wants and have something positive happen because of it or maybe have a scene where she feels jealousy there's so many ways that the film could have included these traits but the fact that they didn't is just confusing to me since there apart of the character.

Since this is a kids film it does have the same message that's present in alot of bad kids animated movies which is just be yourself. There's nothing wrong with that message except it's been done a hundred times and there's no variation on it what so ever would it really have killed the script writer to come up with a different message or was he just to god damn lazy and wanted that big fat Disney pay check.

Overall while as a kids film this is OK it's not a good film and that's what i'm judging it on and I believe that kids deserve better then OK. Like i've said this film is pretty bad mostly because it doesn't take full advantage of the fact that it's prequel which is a huge disappointment in my eyes but tho this is a straight to DVD movie a bad one but still and so the film gets a 5 out of 10 from me and guys I have very little idea what my next review will be but i'm working hard thinking about it so yeah.
