Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back Review
Boys and girls I thought that with the new Jay And Silent Bob movie out that i'd take a look back at the two previous solo movies. So where else better to begin then with their first solo film which i'll admit to having once over ten years ago and haven't thought about since then and well since the second live action film came out i've been thinking about this film more and more and wanting to review it more and more and so here is my review of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.
The plot of the movie is Jay and Silent Bob find out a movie is being made about the comic book based on their likeness (Bluntman and Chronic) and set out to stop the movie being made. As stupid as the story is for these characters it oddly works like if you were going to do a solo Jay And Silent Bob movie you'd expect it to be a certain amount of insane this story is just the right amount of insane in my opinion.
Starring in the film is Jason Mewes as Jay / Chronic , writer and director Kevin Smith as Silent Bob / Bluntman , Ben Affleck as himself / Holden McNeil and Chuckie Sullivan , Jeff Anderson as Randal Graves , Brian O'Halloran as Dante Hicks , Shannon Elizabeth as Justice , Eliza Dushku as Sissy , Ali Larter as Chrissy , Kevin Smith's Wife Jennifer Schwalbach as Missy , Will Ferrell as Federal Wildlife Marshal Willenholly , Jason Lee as Brodie Bruce and Banky Edwards , Matt Damon as himself and Will Hunting , Judd Nelson as Sheriff , George Carlin as Hitchhiker , Carrie Fisher as Nun , Seann William Scott as Brent , Jon Stewart as Reg Hartner , Jules Asner as herself , Steve Kmetko as himself , Tracy Morgan as Pumpkin Escobar , Gus Van Sant as himself and Chris Rock as Chaka Luther King.
I'm going to come out and say it i've not seen Clerks nor have I seen any of the films in the View Askewniverse and so while alot of the actors i've listed are most likely returning actors i'm going to list of which actors are reprising their roles because it would take a lot of work. Back on to the acting in this film it's honestly not that bad but at the same time it's not that good either Jason and Kevin are honestly solid as Jay and Silent Bob but then the actresses playing the girls just aren't that good and not that funny to watch.
Now i'm a fan of Comic Book Men and yes i'm sad that AMC cancelled the show but I guess we needs more seasons of The Walking Dead. However I was shocked to see that The Stash was in this movie it's only in one scene but if your a fan of Comic Book Men it's cool to see this location appear in a movie and it makes me wonder why Kevin Smith hasn't put this location in more of his films but maybe he will put in future films.
One cast member that I didn't mention because she was a baby in this film but Kevin Smith's daughter Harley Quinn Smith appears in the movie. She appears as baby silent bob so basically she grows up into her dad i'm just going to let that sink in for a second but not only that in the new movie she plays the daughter of Jay so she's gone from being a young version of her dad to playing the daughter of his best friend.
Believe it or not guys this film almost never happend because at the time actor Jason Mewes was on every drug under the sun and was drinking alot. Both of which were getting so bad that during the films production Jason would have mood swings due to withdrawal from the drugs and his best friend Kevin Smith one day threw him out of his car on his way to set and told him that if he continued he'd shut the project down.
It does get better tho because after the film finished Kevin moved Jason in with his family so he could get him clean and when Jason stole money from Kevin to buy drugs Kevin took him to rehab centre and he's been clean ever since. That right there is true friendship because Kevin could have ended his friendship with Jason right there and then but he chose to help his friend out and get him the help he needed.
I'm a huge fan of the Scream series and depending on where your seeing this review that should be pretty clear by now. I will admit tho that the scene in which they make a reference to Scream with the then fictional Scream 4 isn't that funny I honestly feel that the reference could have been funnier if they made fun of the concept of Scream instead of just having the characters run on to the Scream 4 set.
I honestly feel that you don't need to have seen the other films in order to understand what's going on in this film or who the characters are and what their relationships are to each other. Which I feel is a good thing because it makes the film more accessible to newer fans who might be put off if they made it so you have to have seen all the films in the universe but I will say that it will help if you've seen the other films tho.
There is a romance angle in this film and I honestly feel that it's not done very well which is a shame because it's a key part of the film. The romance between jay and Justice would have been better if we saw the characters spend more time together or if Justice left the other girls and went with Jay and Silent Bob to help them out instead of just leaving them but instead we have her disappear for a large portion of the films third act.
This is a comedy and so that means we have to talk about the jokes in the film and I have to say the film is alot funnier then what I remember it being. This is where the performances shine in my opinion because it's all down to the actors that these jokes are funny and if the jokes in this film were given to any other actor I dont think they'd work as well but because it's Jason and Kevin doing all of the jokes they oddly work.
Overall this is a really funny film and after seeing I can't wait to see Jay And Silent Bob Reboot just so I can see how the riff on the modern comic book movie crazy. This isn't a perfect film but in terms of mindless entertainment this is really good and so it gets a 6 out of 10 from me.
