Bean: The Movie AKA Bean: The Ultimate Disaster Movie AKA Bean Review
British film fans it's time once again to look at some classic British films and well I thought that instead of doing just one British film i'd do two and make it last a few days. They will both have one thing in common tho and as you might be able to tell either from the title or from the poster it's obvious what that thing is so let's get started with my review of Bean: The Movie AKA Bean: The Ultimate Disaster Movie AKA Bean.
The plot of this movie is that our hero Mr. Bean is sent to America to oversee the reveal of Whistler's Mother which is being transferred there and of course the usual Bean mayhem ensues. In terms of what I thought about the actual story it's pretty weak which was honestly what I was expecting it to be since Mr. Bean stories don't typically have alot of plot to them but at the same time this is a movie so you need to have some sort of plot outside of the basic setup.
The movies stars Rowan Atkinson as Mr. Bean , Peter MacNicol as David Langley , John Mills as Chairman , Pamela Reed as Alison Langley , Harris Yulin as George Grierson , Burt Reynolds as General Newton , Richard Gant as Lieutenant Brutus , Larry Drake as Elmer , Sandra Oh as Bernice Schimmel , Danny Goldring as Security Buck , Leonard from The Big Bang Theory as Stingo Wheelie , Chris Ellis as Detective Butler , Andrew Lawrence as Kevin Langley , Peter Egan as Lord Walton , The Twelfth Doctor as Gareth , June Brown as Delilah , Peter James as Doctor Rosenblum , Tricia Vessey as Jennifer Langley and Tom McGowan as Walter Huntley.
Yeah I had no idea that the future Twelfth doctor was in this movie and i'm going to be honest that was a huge push for me to review this movie and i'm going to tell you now you won't reconise him and he appears at the very beginning of the movie. As for the actual acting in the film it was a lot better then what I remember it being and that's saying something because I watched this movie alot growing up and Rowan really is funny in this movie.
Any one who grew up in nineties Britain would have been exposed to the character of Mr. Bean at some point and those people will know that the character hardly ever talks. In this movie tho he talk alot and I mean alot yes in the show he'd say the odd word but that was it in this movie tho he gets whole sentences and a speech which in my opinion doesn't really work for the character and was most likely something that the Americans wanted added in to the film.
If you saw my review of Annabelle Comes Home which depending on where your seeing this review you either would have seen that review or will be seeing it in a few days. Then you'll know that I had the choice a few days ago (of this writing of course) to either review the new Annabelle movie or to review this one i'm still regretting choosing Annabelle over this movie because this film was just a blast to watch both from the standpoint of someone who grew up with both the film and the character but also just from a standalone film standpoint bottom line don't watch the new Annabelle movie it's bad.
This film has three different titles and i'm not sure why that is all three titles do make sense since they make it clear it's a movie about Mr. Bean but why three vastly different titles for one movie. I personally grew up with it being called either Bean or Bean: The Ultimate Disaster Movie (the VHS cover never made it clear on the title) so for me seeing it being called Bean: The Movie is really odd just like it's weird for me to refer to the first Avengers movie as anything other then Avengers Assemble.
In terms of jokes I remember them being alot funnier but that might be because I first saw this movie when I was seven or eight years old and the show and the character is aimed at kids. That said tho there are alot of jokes which were funny then and are funny now like for example Mr. Bean using his hand to make a gun and then running away from American airport police when they think he has an actual gun that's a funny idea but there are alot of jokes which just didn't land this time around.
Overall this was a fun nostalgia trip for me and this is a movie worth watching even tho it does have a lot of flaws and so it gets a modest 5 out of 10 from me.
