The Dukes of Hazzard: The Beginning Review
This is something that you movie fans won't know but i'm a bit of a fan of The Dukes Of Hazzard i've seen plenty of episodes of the show plus literally all of the films. While I have seen and reviewed this movie before it was done many and I mean many years ago and i thought that i'd spend the next few days taking a look at both of the remake films and so here is my review of The Dukes of Hazzard: The Beginning.
The plot of the movie is cousins Bo and Luke move to the fictional town of Hazzard county and have to help their Uncle Jessie from loosing the family farm to the villains Boss Hogg. I will admit that there is more going on then what i've said but once you boil it down this is what the plot of the movie is and in that regard it's pretty much the plot that you'd expect from anything to do with The Dukes Of Hazzard but I would have liked them try something different since this is also the plot to the 2005 film.
Starring in the film is Jonathan Bennett as Bo Duke , Randy Wayne as Luke Duke , April Scott as Daisy Duke , Adam Shulman as Enos Strate , Willie Nelson as Uncle Jesse , Chris McDonald as Boss Hogg , Sherilyn Fenn as Lulu Coltrane Hogg , Harland Williams as Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane , Joel Moore as Cooter Davenport , Gary Cole as The Balladeer , Jennifer Hill as Brooke Handy , Trishelle Cannatella as Ally Handy and Todd Grinnell as Hughie Hogg.
For what is a straight to DVD film the acting in the film isn't as bad as alot of people would have you think it is. That being said tho it's obvious that none of the cast members have any chemistry with each other what so ever which if the leads were playing strangers would make sense but their not there playing cousins which does require you to have some chemistry with whoever is playing your cousin and that's where it becomes a huge issue.
As the title would suggest this film is a prequel but it's not a prequel to the original show instead it's a prequel to the 2005 remake. Due to that the film is alot more adult then the show would ever get and that's something that doesn't sit right with me because The Dukes Of Hazzard was never an adult show it was a show for all the family and it was a show that tought family values none of that is present in this film what so ever.
Even as a prequel to the remake it still doesn't work since the movie contradicts things that happen in the original movie. One of which is how The Dukes got their car The General Lee looking how it looks in the show in the movie it's because the dukes wrecked the car after jumping it over a bridge but this movie says it was was already like that and they found it at the bottom of a ravine. So it doesn't work as a prequel to the or as a prequel to the movie.
Now as I said this is a prequel and as such it falls into the exact same pitfalls that other prequels fall in to. Due to that you know right away who's going to come out on top and who's going to loose so there's no surprise at all left in the story because we know everything that's going to happen and how it's going to effect the characters in question which makes me wonder why they didn't just make basic plot of this film the plot of a sequel film rather then a prequel.
As with the previous film this is also a comedy and like the previous film most of the jokes in this film are s*x jokes. Which doesn't really mesh well with what The Dukes Of Hazzard was since as i've said The Dukes Of Hazzard was more about family values rather then b**bs and so to have them in here just feels out of place. What makes it worse is the fact that those jokes just aren't funny I would forgive them for having s*x jokes if they were are at least funny but there not.
As one would expect the true star of this film is the car and while nothing is ever going to beat the beauty of the original 1969 Dodge Charger. That said tho this car is stunning to look at I have no idea what car plays the General Lee in this film but boy h boy does it look good. It also helps that they show the car of a lot i'm not even kidding everytime it's on screen the film shows it of in some way and the film does have the car do some pretty impressive jumps as well.
Overall as a movie this isn't that bad but as a prequel it doesn't work at all and yes there was something things that I left but that's also because there present in the 2005 film which i'm planning on covering soon and I didn't want to repeat myself and so this film scores a 3 out of 10 from me.
