Death Note: Light Up the New World Review
Hello there Death Note fans and movie fans as someone who only really saw the TV drama version of Death Note i was really excited to see this new film version and yes i know it has nothing to do with the show but here we go with my review of Death Note: Light Up The New World.
Ok the plot of the movie is it's been ten years since the deaths of Light and L and someone new has taken up the mantle of Kira. To be honest that's all the plot i could get out of watching this movie because the movie makes it pretty hard to find it's story and it really isn't helped by the fact that the first twenty or so minuets is just the characters throwing out plot left, right and center and then when you add to the fact that the film has pacing issues as well.
The cast for this film includes Masahiro Higashide as Tsukuru Mishima , Sosuke Ikematsu as Ryūzaki , Masaki Suda as Yūki Shien and Sota Aoyama as Tōta Matsuda plus reprising there roles we have Erika Toda as Misa Amane , Nakamura Shidō II as Ryuk , Kenichi Matsuyama as L and Tatsuya Fujiwara as Light Yagami, I have to say in terms of cast the film did an ok job and by that i mean some of the actors do a great job and some are just ok at best i personally loved Sosuke as Ryusaki i thought he was wonderfully weird and was bordering on insane but to me he looked like he was having the most fun in the part.
To me you cannot have a great Death Note product and not have thrills since to me this franchise is a thriller but sadly this film doesn't have that many thrills there are a few here and there but for me not enough they could have included more if they switched the main focus of the film which i won't spoil here but if you have seen the film you'll know what i'm talking about.
There was a scene that's very early in the movie that straight up reminded me of the skydiving scene from the 2014 Godzilla movie and while it was happening i was there thinking "ok when is Godzilla going to show up" (sadly he never did) but tho i cannot be the only one who was reminded of that scene i won't say where the scene in this movie appears but the filmmakers must have been inspired by that one scene.
Now as expected there is CGI in this movie i won't say who is CGI since all you Death Note fans will already know who i mean but i thought the CGI was actually really good the CG characters looked like they were there on set with the characters and there's a truly stunning CGI effect near the end of the movie which took my breath away.
Now i have to admit most of the returning characters except from Ryuk all basically just appear in cameo form and offer nothing to the plot of the movie of course for L and Light there already dead so they can't effect the main story but why did they have Misa Amane make an appearance you can take her character out of the movie and nothing changes at all.
There's one scene that appears shortly after the Godzlla skydiving rip off that actually got me excited for the movie it's a scene that's just so freaking cool and badass i was actually wondering how they actually filmed it and if you've seen the movie then you'll know what scene i'm on about and you'll know why i was disappointed after it.
Overall i'd say that if you can work out what's going on and if your a fan of the Death Note franchise then this movie is for you but if not then i'd say wait until Netflix comes out with there version later this year for me this movie is a 7 out of 10
