The Spongebob Movie: Search For Squarepants Film SPOILER FREE Film Review
It's hard to picture the fact that the Spongebob Squarepants franchise has spawned several films and two spin off TV shows. This is despite the fact that Spongebob Squarepants isn't as popular now as it was back when it was first airing when it just took off and yet the character has oddly become the mascot character for Paramount Pictures with them willing to do anything to keep the franchise and well now the lovable sponge has another movie out this time going straight to theaters and well I thought that i'd check it out and so then join me as I give you my SPOILER FREE review of the film that is currently going head to head with Avatar: Fire And Ash and is loosing with the film in question being called simply just "The Spongebob Movie: Search For Squarepants" enjoy.
The plot of this film is when he and Patrick are tricked into sailing with The Flying Dutchmen it's up Mr. Krabs , Gary and a reluctant Squidward to rescue Spongebob before it's far to late. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad as the film does have a semi decent plot to it but at the same time tho this films plot just isn't as good as the plots to the other Spongebob movies as alot of them all had plots that you could only do in a movie whereas the plot to this film just feels like the kind of plot that you could tell in an episode of the show or one of the shows many special episodes as there's nothing about this films plot that says that it needs to the plot of a movie with this being something that is a very fine line for alot of TV to movie adaptations have to walk across as the plot needs to be familiar enough for it to be apart of the shows world but also be epic and and grand enough to justify it being the plot of a movie and that's just not what you get in this film as this is a plot that does feel oddly more tamer when compared to any of the previous Spongebob movies heck say what you will about the Sandy Cheeks movie but you couldn't tell the plot of that film in an episode of special episode of the show you could only tell that movies plot in a movie format with this film having a plot that is more then strong enough to support an entire feature length film in it's own right with the plot of this film also being really rather entertaing and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Tom Kenny as SpongeBob SquarePants and Gary The Snail and Clancy Brown as Mr. Krabs. Also starring in this film is Rodger Bumpass as Squidward Tentacles , Bill Fagerbakke as Patrick Star , Carolyn Lawrence as Sandy Cheeks , Mr. Lawrence as Plankton , Mark Hamill as The Flying Dutchman , George Lopez as JK Fishlips , Isis "Ice Spice" Gaston as A Ticket Taker Fish , Arturo Castro as a Santa Monica Ride Operator , Sherry Cola as A Studio Spokesperson and A Krusty Krab Patron and Regina Hall as Barb.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty pretty good. With the fact that this films acting being as good as it is is something that's to be expected at this point in time as alot of this films actors have been playing these characters since 1999 and would therefor know how best to perform there respective characters altho with that being said Tom Kenny's voice isn't sounding as youthful as Spongebob anymore it's not that noticeable but it is something that does creep in every now and then during the course of the film this is despite the fact that he does still turn in a good performance as both Spongebob and Gary and heck even the films more newer actors do more then hold there own when it comes to acting with the series main actors with the best actor in the film being none other then Tom Kenny as even tho he is starting to sound a bit more older when he does his Spongebob voice he is still really good in this film with it being clear as day that he is having a blast making this film and while Mark Hamill is once again really good in this film your just going to top what the main franchise actor is doing with what it undoubtedly his most famous role as Tom Kenny is just that good in this film with the acting that's in this film not really being helped by the fact that this film script is just so bad as it gives none of this films actors absolutely nothing to work with interms what it is that there actual characters personalities are even meant to be which is something that really does harm the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
Doing the animation for this film is FuseFX , the legends and the greats that are currently over at Reel FX Creative Studios and Screen Novelties. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual animation that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual animation that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad with the sticking to using 3D CGI animation for the films animation which to be fair doesn't look that bad it's just that the animation in a movie is meant to look better then the animation in the show and while seeing the characters in 3D is more then enough of a change in the first place the films quality of animation is arguably weaker then that of the show as the film doesn't have that much detail in it's animation with things looking plain and boring alot of the time as the films backgrounds aren't as visually interesting as they could have been this is despite the fact that the main locations from the show do still look good in this change of animation but when you compare this films animation to that of the first movie it's night and day with the animation in the first film looking alot more better as the makers of that film had no idea on if they were going to make more seasons of the show let alone another movie so they put all 0f there best work into that one film where as here it feels like that the makers of this film know full well that there going to be getting more theatrically released Spongebob movies and therefor aren't putting in there best work however tho this films animation does come alive when the films wants to tell a joke as the characters have these really funny expressions that do help to sell you on the joke.
To be frank this film is getting beaten at the box office by Avatar: Fire And Ash with this not only being due to the fact that that film was very heavily pushed and promoted. It's also due to the fact that with this film this would be the third Spongebob movie to come it out in two years as both Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie and Plankton: The Movie were released straight to Netflix which could mean that people are just feeling fatigue over seeing a new Spongebob movie and yet there's still a third spin off movie to come at some point in the future and while this is a great way of expanding the franchise and giving lesser known characters the spotlight it's also going to cause people to not want to go and see the latest Spongebob movie as they'd be sick and tired of seeing them all the time this was something that Disney themselves had to learn when they released both Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Solo: A Star Wars Story within a year of each other sometimes less equals more and heck there was very little in the way of marketing for this film and whilst it has made back over $60 million American dollars against a budget of $64 million dollars which is no small feet by any means The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water earned a whopping $325 million dollars whilst the previous film only earned around $4 million dollars so clearly these films are the kinds of films that used to make big money for Paramount Pictures but there still needs to be alot more time inbetween the release of films to give audiences a chance to catch our breathe before releasing the next one and there does also need to be better marketing done as well as going by how much this film has made thus far alot of people might now know that this film is even out in the first place.
To give this film some form of credit it does try to be an entertaining and it does mostly succeed in doing so. Yet you do have to sit alot of bad stuff just to get to the small amounts of good like all of the stuff with Spongebob and Mr. Krabs is really good as it lets you in on what there relationship is like with Spongebob basically seeing him as being a father figure who he just wants to impress and yet that's also the problem as the first film also had a very similar plot line for the Spongebob character as well as in that film he just wants to impress Mr. Krabs and prove that he's a man and yet here in this film he wants to impress Mr. Krabs and prove that he's a big boy which is literally just a carbon copy of what they did in the first film whereas it would have been more interesting to see Spongebob and Patrick's friendship be tested as that's something that isn't typically done in an episode of the show and it's something that would have been unique to this film and yet for one reason or another the makers of this film instead went with something that they've already done which is pointless as all it does is make the makers of tis film look lazy as if they couldn't come up with an original character arc for Spongebob but again to be fair the scenes with him and Mr. Krabs are perhaps some of the best scenes in the movie as you do get a strong scene of there bond for each other and what they mean to each other as well and heck it's even Mr. Krabs that leads the rescue team in this movie as that's how much Spongebob really means to him and yet because of the fact that this films is basically copying a character arc from the first movie you already know how it's going to end and yeah it ends the exact way that you really think it would do.
Believe it or not even tho he's been a character in he show for decades at this point in time this is the first time that The Flying Dutchmen has been a character in any of the Spongebob movies. With this in this film not really being all that threatening as a villain which is understandable give the fact that this film is made for kids and the character was never really that big of a threat in the show which does make him a weird choice to be the main villain of a Spongebob movie as surely a character like Plankton who is pretty much the series main villain has been used as the main villain in a Spongebob movie before now it does make more sense for him to be the main villain as there are places that you can go with his character and with schemes that would feel right at home in a Spongebob whereas with The Flying Dutchmen his main scheme in this film is try and get Spongebob to break his curse so that he can become a human again and that's really it and while that is the kind of plan that would work in a film as it is cinematic enough to work as the plan for a feature length film but at the same time tho that's all you can really do with his character ad when the film doesn't make him that much of a threat then we the audience can't really buy into him as being the main villain of the film yet if the makers of this film did make seem like more of a threat or as much of a threat that they possibly could have done then it would have gone a long way into making us worry for Spongebob and Patrick and want us to want to see them make it out of the film alive and well with The Flying Dutchmen just being a weak villain when compared to someone like Plankton.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and twenty one minuets and two seconds. Which to be fair to this film is pretty much the running time that you'd expect a film like this one to have with the film even having the right amount of plot to cover that amount of running time in the first place and yet even so the film really doesn't use it's running time all that wisely as the film doesn't take the time to fully develop it's plot as the film spends more time jumping around it's plot and making things that should have been in the third act be something that happens in the second act which might not seem like much and to the films credit it really isn't and yet it's those small things that do prevent this films plot from being as good as it could have been with the film not really doing anything to give it's plot any kind of development at all so much so that it does feel like that things are just happening for random reasons and not because of the fact that the plot of the film demands that they happen with the film not even giving it's characters are kind of character development which granted is something that it really didn't have to do due to the fact that the characters would have most likely have gotten there character development not only from the show but also the other films as well and therefor they really didn't need to have that much character development in this film and yet it still would have helped the film out if the newer characters who haven't been in the other films or in the show it would have helped if they got some sort of character development as we don't get to find out that much about them in this film but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is a comedy that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual comedy thats actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With it being made clear as day that the makers of this film put alot more thought and effort into this films comedy then they did quite literally anything else as the films comedy is where the film does shine as while the film isn't as funny as the first film was it does have it's moments where it is really funny with the best joke in the film being one that I can't talk about as it's a huge massive spoiler for the film but without giving away to much it does involve Spongebob , Mr. Krabs and The Flying Dutchmen riding on a rollercoaster with the thing that makes it funny being not what happens in the main scene but rather what happens in the background of the scene with there even being a great scene with Spongebob and the Flying Dutchmen where the scene takes on the shows more surreal sense of humor and while there is quite alot of more kid friendly jokes in the film there's also a shockingly high amount of adult jokes as well which granted was something that alot pf the other Spongebob films have as well but here it did feel out of place with them being more distracting then out right funny and when the film does tell a really good joke then it is something that it really does stand out as the film tells just as many bad jokes as it does good one in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall it's save to say that this film is more better then Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie was this is still nothing ore then an average film and really doesn't deserve it's high score of 83% on Rotten Tomatoes as the film isn't that good in the first place in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 6 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from IMP Awards . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images really from this very film being the really great Google Images this is really because of the fact that really all of the images that I really indeed got and really used from Google Images are all really high quality really with all of the images that really are all and of course really currently up and on the really great and the really solid Google Images really are all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
