Bad Boys Film Review
Back in the nineties Will Smith was just on the cusp of becoming the huge megastar that he is today as such it would be understandable if people forgot or just straight up didn't know about alot of his very early films. As films like the one that i'm going to be reviewing for you all today aren't as well as say Independence Day or Men In Black for example but this film has also spawned it's own franchises with the fourth film in this franchise having just been released last year and so then join me as I review the film started of a franchise with the film in question being called simply just "Bad Boys" enjoy.
The plot of this film is two Miami Police Detectives have just three days to find millions of dollars worth of stolen drugs before there entire department is shut down for good. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad as it was a plot that's barely been done in cop films before now but that's also the problem as this films plot isn't all that good either as it's plot that just straight up isn't something that works as while setting a time limit before a certain thing happens is a good idea in this case it's something that means that the plot can't be developed as the film has to rush things along at an unnatural pace and because of that the plot of this film is something that really does suffer as on paper it is a plot that really should work but because of the fact that it can't be fully developed due to it's own three day time limit then all of the plots ideas and themes just come across as being really half baked and even the idea of having the police having this time limit is a good idea it's one that's better served being in a sequel and not in the first film as the first film has so much to do in the first place and by giving it that time limit the plot of this film can't be as good as it really could have been with the plot of this film also being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Martin Lawrence as Detective Sergeant Marcus Miles Burnett and Will Smith as Detective Sergeant Michael "Mike" Lowrey. Also starring in this film is Téa Leoni as Julie Mott , Tchéky Karyo as Fouchet , Theresa Randle as Theresa Burnett , Joe Pantoliano as Captain Conrad Howard , Marg Helgenberger as Captain Alison Sinclair , Nestor Serrano as Detective Sanchez , Julio Oscar Mechoso as Detective Ruiz , Saverio Guerra as Chet , Anna Thompson as Francine , Kevin Corrigan as Elliot , Michael Imperioli as Joe "Jo-Jo" , Vic Manni as Ferguson , Frank John Hughes as Casper , Ralph Gonzales as Kuni , Marc Macaulay as Noah Trafficante , Emmanuel Xuereb as Eddie Dominguez , John Salley as Fletcher and Karen Alexander as Max Logan.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With both of this films leads turning in some really good performances which given that the main characters in this film are played by Martin Lawrence and Will Smith really isn't all that surprising as they both some really good actors in there own right and it does help that both actors have some really good chemistry together which is something that does make them more believable as friends and while the overall quality of this films acting is really high with alot of them turning in some really good performances there are some really bad performances to be found in his film with both Téa Leoni and Marg Helgenberger coming across as being really wooden and even tho this is this the first feature length film that he directed this films director Michael Bay really does show that he has a talent for getting a good performance out of his actors and not having to rely two much on big explosions to cover up for the fact that his actors can't act with the acting that's in this very film also being helped by the fact that this films script is just so good that all this films actors have to do is just say the lines as they are written and a good performance really will come out of them more naturally which is something that really does help to raise the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
To give this film some form of credit it doesn't do anything that you'd expect a typical cop film to do as it doesn't have a Police Chief who is fed up with the antics of the heroes and the heroes themselves are genuinely good cops. Both of those are things that aren't typically included in cop films and TV shows as there more interested in giving us good laughs instead of good characters where as here the emphasis seems to be on giving us characters that we the audience actually like as that way the jokes will not only land more but the films action will also mean more as us the audience have a reason to like these characters and won't to see them succeed and while having those tropes be in any cop show or movie can work depending of what the project is but it's not something that would work in this film as this film is all about being very character driven and those tropes would go against all of that as it would make the characters come across as being really annoying characters and that would make it harder for anyone in the audience to buy into the films premise and to want to these characters succeed when the main goal should always be to get the audience to care about your characters because at the end of the day if your audience doesn't care about your plot or characters then it doesn't matter how good or bad your plot is because your audience just straight up doesn't care at all.
Speaking of the films characters the characters that are in this film are some really well done characters that do have fully thought out personalities. With Mike being a playboy type of character who will do and say anything to get the girl that he wants and Marcus is by the books kind of character who really does love his wife and kids and while both of these personalities do clash alot of the time it's also something that makes them good friends as they each have something that the other needs as Marcus does need to loosen up a bit and Mike can stand to do things by the books and nit fly off the handle from time to time with both of them willing to do what's right no matter what the cost is to there own well being and the fact that we get to see these styles clash all of the time does go to show you that makers of this film really did know what they where doing when they came up with these characters with both characters also being really well cast as well but while the leads have fully formed personalities the same thing cannot be said for the rest of this films characters who just aren't that well thought out and who's personality seems to be whatever the scene demands that it be and while it does make sense that alot of the characters don't have fully formed personalities it's also something that happens to this films villain as well who is just a bland character who is at best forgettable and at worst just a badly written character in his own right.
To be frank this films main villains Fouchet and Eddie Dominguez are a pair of badly written characters. As neither of them have much in the way of personality so much so that there pretty much forgettable characters and heck it's safe to assume that alot of people most likely forgot that Eddie Dominguez was a villain in this film as he has so little impact on the plot of the film with Fouchet being slightly better as at the very least he does things that actually impact the plot of the film like killing of Mike's ex-girlfriend among several other things but at the same time tho both of them are really badly written characters as the film really doesn't take the time that it really needed to fully establish either character both as a character in their own right nor as a credible threat to our heroes and heck even Captain Alison Sinclair comes across as being a more credible threat then either of the films main two villains and she's barely in the film at all with this being made worse when you take into account that we don't even find out why both Fouchet and Dominguez are villains in the first place which fair enough is to be expected as the main focus of a cop film should never be the villain it should always be the cops but there really should have been some of there backstory revealed as it could have helped us the audience to actually hate them more instead of actually forgetting that there in the film alot of the time.
As a comedy this is where this film really does truly shine as both of the main characters are so likable that all of the jokes that they make about each other come across more as being playful banter between two best friends and less mean spirited. Which they very easily could have done if they had cast this movie wrong and while the film does have some really good jokes in it the film does very sadly have alot more very bad jokes in it with alot of this films jokes not really landing and coming across as being forced with this something does sadly follow Micheal Bay through alot of his films and while the jokes with Marcus and Mike come across as feeling natural none of that happens with alot of the films other jokes as alot of the time it feels like that the makers of the film only added in jokes to those moments because of the fact that they thought that the film needed one in it and not because it was something that a character like the Police Chief would actually say which does for the most part make alot of this films jokes feel alot more character driven then what you would normally find in alot of other Micheal Bay movies as alot of the time the jokes in his films feel like jokes that any character would say where as here there are only jokes that only either Mike or Marcus would say and that is something that does help to elevate the overall comedy that's in this very film and make it slightly better then what it really could have been.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and fifty eight minuets and fifty one seconds. Which to be frank is a bit on the long side for this kind of film as even tho this film does have more then enough there interms of plot to really cover that amount of running time typically an action comedy would typically last around around and thirty minuets maybe one hour and forty minuets at the most and yet this film is almost two hours long when it really doesn't need to be that long at all as you very easily really could have told this films entire plot and not loose anything that's actually important to the plot of the film in well under one hour and thirty minuets which means that we do get alot of scenes in this film that are nothing more then just filler scenes as they add nothing to the overall plot of the film nor the characters either with it not really being helped by the fact that even this film is almost two hours long it really doesn't use it's running time very wisely as very little of the characters are actually fleshed out characters with this being especially true for Julie who despite being a main character in the film instead comes across as being nothing more then Ike's love interest and really nothing more then that and while it's understandable that the side characters aren't focused on or fleshed out that much they still could have been given something to do that would flesh them out a little bit more then what they already are in the finished final cut of the film but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is an action film that really does mean that I have to actually talk about the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. With this film in all honesty having some really fun filled action scenes and it's during those action scenes that we get to see just how strong the bond is between Marcus and Mike as even tho they'll both make jokes about the other deep they both clearly care for another as well and this is something that we see come into play quite alot of the time during this film as there not just partners they really are best friends with the best action scene in this whole entire being the third act chase scene as that scene was just so well done as we see how things can and do keep on escalating escalating to the point where we the audience do believe that our main characters might be in danger and to see them only get through and beat the bad guy by the skin of there teeth feels very in character for them and it adds a dose of realism as well as realistically these two character despite them both being fully trained police officers would only just get by beating the bad guy in this film and that is something that really does make that final third act scene some really good peace of action with the whole film also having alot of really fun filled action scenes in it as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall while this film is responsible for not only starting the career of Micheal Bay as a director but also this franchise as a whole this is still not that good of a film as it does have a few bright spots in it and clearly audiences thought that this was a good film as it's got three sequels and a TV show but even so this film could have been a whole lot better then what it actually was in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 5.5 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all pf the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from IMP Awards . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images really from this very film being the really great Google Images this is really because of the fact that really all of the images that I really indeed got and really used from the really great Google Images are all really high quality really with all of the images that really are all and of course really currently up and on the really great and the really solid Google Images really are all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
