Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie Film Review
The Power Rangers franchise is one that is sadly on ice right now when it really shouldn't be as we need good old fashioned heroes like them right now in the world. With the brand name being the biggest thing to come out of the nineties with the show being a huge mega ratings hit when it first debuted in 1993 as such it was only about time that the Rangers would take their world saving antics to the big screen and in 1995 that's exactly what happend and so the join me as I review the film that is just as corny and as just campy as you remember it being with the film in question being called simply just "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie" enjoy.
The plot of this film is when the rangers oose there powers and their base of operations is destroyed and there mentor is left for dead thanks to a new evil villain by the name of Ivan Ooze the rangers must travel off world to get there powers back and to try and Ivan once and for all. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good with the plot of the film being nothing more then an extended episode of the show which yes is still a bad thing but at the same time tho there's really only one kind of plot that you could've done for big budget Power Rangers movie and this is it and to be the film does make good use of the big screen format by showing us stuff that wouldn't be in the show and while not alot of what they show us early on has an impact on the films plot the actual plot of the film is exactly what you'd expect from the Power Rangers franchise only now it's done up on the big screen and that's really all there is to it with the plot of this film also being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Jason David Frank as Tommy Oliver , Johnny Yong Bosch as Adam Park and Karan Ashley as Aisha Campbell. Also starring in this film is Amy Jo Johnson as Kimberly Hart , David Yost as Billy Cranston , Paul Schrier as Farkas "Bulk" Bulkmeier , Jason Narvy as Eugene "Skull" Skullovitch , Gabrielle Fitzpatrick as Dulcea , Nicholas Bell as Zordon , Jamie Croft as Fred Kelman , Peter Mochrie as Mr. Kelman , Kerrigan Mahan as the voice of Goldar , Robert L. Manahan as the voice of Zordon , Robert Axelrod as the voice of Lord Zedd , Barbara Goodson as the voice of Rita Repulsa , Richard Steven Horvitz as Alpha 5 , Martin G. Metcalf as Mordant and Paul Freeman as Ivan Ooze.
Now then interms of what I personally thought felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. Which is to expected from this franchise as the acting in the Power Rangers franchise has never been great and it's frequently been one of the many things that this franchise has been knocked down for as well but once you accept this franchise for it's campy tone and corny nature then you can kind of look past that aspect of it and it;s the same tying that's also true for this film as well since if you look past how campy this film is then the overacting in it does sort of make sense as it comes across as the whole cast are in on the joke and while yes some Power Rangers actors simply really can't act those that can do really do turn in a solid performance in this film however sadly the same thing cannot be said for the films new characters as all of them can't act at all with there acting being really wooden a best and just straight up bad at it's worst with the acting in this film not really being helped by the fact that the script for this film is just so bad as it gives absolutely none of this films cast absolutely nothing to work with interms of what it is that there respective characters personalities are even meant to be in the first place which is something that really effect the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
Doing the CGI for this film is VIFX , Optical Illusions , Digital Magic Company , Sessums Engineering , Wolf Drum Imaging , Visual Concept Engineering and OCS/Freeze Frame/Pixel Magic. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well the in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really bad like even for the time that this film came out in this films CGI wasn't that good with the films very poorly done CGI having aged even worse over the many decades since the film was first released and while this is something that couldn't have been helped as CGI wasn't that big in the nineties and as result of that is the fact that of course the films CGI really isn't going to be that good as there really wasn't that many CGI effects houses around at the time let alone ones that would do the CGI for this film for really next to nothing and while yes the effects that are in this film really could have been alot better then what it was it's still alot better then what it could have been with this being due to the fact that the effects world really wasn't all that big back in the day but on the flip side of that is the fact that bad effects really will always be some really bad looking effects.
Usually you need to have a base knowledge of the show in order to understand the movie version of the show. However the same thing cannot be said with this movie as this movie isn't canon to the show something which we see all throughout the movie be it because of the fact that both Zordon and the command centre look very vastly different to how they look in the show but so does Angel Grove itself with the town loosing it's mostly Californian look with it being replaced by a mostly Australian look and while yes this is due to the fact that the film was set filmed in Australia but we also in the show how the rangers got there ninja powers and it's done differently from how they get them in the movie and even the fact that this film relies far to much on CGI where as the show used men in suits for there Zord fights and even the ranger suits look different with the suits in this film being more armoured when in the show they were quite literally spandex outfits as a result of that is the fact that you don't need to watch a single episode of this show in order to understand this movie as nothing happens in the show that effects the plot of the movie and nothing happens in the movie that effects the plot of the show and while yes they did eventually release a movie that is canon to the show this one is one that you could watch without knowing a single thing about the show ad still get the exact same amount of enjoyment out of it that you would get if you did watch every single episode of the show.
There are times where this show could pass of an action comedy as the film does have alot of moments that are really funny. With alot of what makes this film funny being the fact that the film plays everything straight and when you add in the fact that the film has some really bad writing and some really bad acting it makes those badly written lines come across as being unintentionally funny and yet the film does have some lines that were meant to be funny like the fact that Adam openly comments on the fact that his ninja animal is frog something that the audience was also doing as well and the fact that one of the things that this films villain Ivan Ooze missed was The Brady Bunch Reunion both of those things where funny lines and yet they were both adlibbed by the actors on the day of filming and they both work really well not only for there respective characters but also for the tone f the film as well as this is a film that's quite clearly not meant to be taken seriously and while there are some jokes that aren't as funny like the fact that the villains have this hypnotized dad do both ballet and the swim is a joke that was funny back in the nineties but really hasn't aged all that well and while Kim's joke about her Zord having a nice stereo is a good throwback to the show it's also a joke that really isn't all that funny in this film but it is a really cute line tho.
While this films villain Ivan Ooze is a really good and fun filled villain he's not the villain that Power Rangers fan wanted to see in the very first ever Power Rangers movie. As we'd want to see both Rita Repulsa and Lord Zedd be the main villains of the movie as they were at this point in time of course the main villains of the show and as a result of that is the fact that having them be the main villains of the movie version of the show does make sense and heck all the makers of this film would have to have done is have them unleash there most evil plan and there most evil monster ever and that's it that's your movie just have a monster that's so powerful that even they are scared to use it and only use it when they have to do and you could even have that monster be so powerful that it drains the rangers powers thus forcing the rangers to still go off world this is something that make both Rita Repulsa and Lord Zedd strong characters since this movie isn't canon to the show anyways it really wouldn't matter if they aren't that strong villains in the show but at the same time tho Ivan Ooze is a fun character and is one that the makers of the film could have done more with in some way shape or form even if it's just by expanding upon the characters backstory or by giving the character new powers that would allow for a lesser known actor to play him in the show and while the character is a fun character there;s not really all that much to him as a character either.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and thirty five minuets and forty eight seconds. With this film having a really good running time as it is afterall just an extended episode of the show and as a result of that is the fact that the film really doesn't need a longer running time then what it already has to this films credit it really does have more then enough there interms of plot to really cover that amount of running time as even tho the plot of this film could very easily be covered in a two or even three part episode of the show in the show they'd have alot of it broken up by having Zord fights at least in the first and maybe part of the second episode which is something that could not only get repetitive but also get boring as well where as here since they saved the big Zord fight to the end like they would normally do in the show it means that the movie can flow alot better and also feel alot bigger then the typical episode of the show whilst being nothing more then an extended episode of the show as that's basically what any Power Rangers movie was always going to be and at least with this film they at least had fun with that and took advantage of the fact that it's film by showing us locations that we wouldn't be able to see in the show but I really will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is an action show that means that I gave to actually talk about the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual actin that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. Which is something that does make sense as one of the things that Power Rangers was known for was it's action and as a result of that is the fact that it does make sense that the movie also has some really good action in it but while the action in the show never quite reached that cartoonish level here they reach it quite a few times not only by adding really cartoony sounding sound effects but also by having the rangers do moves which would be more at home in a cartoon like the fact that Tommy does a spinning dropkick and just keeps on spinning when gravity would have taken over and he would fell to the ground the first time which while yes is still a cool move it's also one that does take you out of the movie as well with the best action scene in the whole entire movie oddly enough doesn't feature the morphed rangers as the best action in the movie is the opening action scene where it's just the rangers having this fun unmorphed fight at a building sight which is just a fu action scene that's really incredibly over the top but in the best way possible in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall while this movie might be non canon to the show itself it's also the best representation of the show itself as you get all of the things that are in the show only now it's on the big screen and while alot of us who grew up in the nineties will love this movie this is movie that people today can also enjoy if there in the right frame of mind to just turn there brain of and just watching something that's nothing more the just pure dumb fun and really nothing more then that in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does means that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 5 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all pf the mages that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all f the images that I personally used in this very review from the official Power Rangers fandom wiki page , IMP Awards . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images really from this very film being the really great Google Images this is really because of the fact that really all of the images that I really indeed got and really used from the really great Google Images are all really high quality with all the images that are currently up and on the really great and the really solid Google Images really are all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
