The Little Mermaid 2023 Film Review
For some strange reason Disney is obsessed with remaking all of the films that people actually like and thus will always be bound to fail because of how well liked the originals were. With a chief example of this being the film that i'm about to review for all today as this film is a remake of a film that saved Disney Feature Animation and launched the famous Disney Renaissance and yet for some strange Disney thought that this was the absolutely perfect film to remake and so then join me as I review the film that really didn't need to be remade at all with the film in question being called simply just "The Little Mermaid" enjoy.
The plot of this film is a young mermaid named Ariel falls in love with a human and when she's given just three days by an evil sea witch to get true loves kiss she has to everything that she can do in order to prevent the witch from taking her soul. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well ten in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad but that's only because f the fact that the plot of this film is the exact same plot as the original film with nothing really new or added to it and as a result of that is the fact that it just comes across as watching a more watered down version of the original films plot only without any of the heart , soul and charm put into it that made the plot of the original film not only work really well but also be really endearing as well as here the plot of the film just comes across as being rather heartless and soulless like it's just going through the motions and that's really it with the plot of this film also being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather nagging as well as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Halle Bailey as Ariel , Jonah Hauer-King as Eric and Melissa McCarthy as Ursula. Also starring in this film is Noma Dumezweni as Queen Selina , Art Malik as Sir Grimsby , Martina Laird as Lashana , Jessica Alexander as Vanessa , Emily Coates as Rosa , John Dagleish as Mulligan , Christopher Fairbank as Hawkins , Lorena Andrea as Perla , Simone Ashley as Indira , Karolina Conchet as Mala , Sienna King as Tamika , Kajsa Mohammar as Karina , Nathalie Sorrell as Caspia , Daveed Diggs as the voice of Sebastian , Jacob Tremblay as the voice of Flounder , Awkwafina as the voice of Scuttle and Javier Bardem as King Triton.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. However that's also the problem as the acting that's in this film isn't all that good either with this films actors just coming across as being lost almost as if there unsure of what kind of performance to give and while yes we do good performances from both Halle Bailey and Melissa McCarthy those seem to be the only two actors that are actually trying to turn in a good performance with the rest of this films just not even bothering half the time and coming across as being lost and unsure of themselves the other half of the time with this being something that this films director Rob Marshall really should have sought to fix when he was busy shooting this film with the acting that's in this very film not really being helped by the fact that the script for this film is just so bad as it gives absolutely none of this films cast absolutely nothing to work with interms of what it is that there respective characters personalities are even mean to he in the first place which s something that really does harm the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
Doing the CGI for this film is Framestore , Moving Picture Company , Rodeo FX , Union Visual Effects , Vitality Visual Effects and Secret Lab. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad as alot of this films CGI foes look good and alot of the characters do have some really character designs to them but at the same time both Sabastian and Flounder do look really horrible and while granted they look better then how they looked in The Little Mermaid Live the CGI for those characters also isn't that good either ad they look a little bit to real with both of those character being in the uncanny valley and it gets to the points where they do look a little bit creepy at times and while this film does indeed have some really good CGI for the most with the monstrous Ursula looking really good and looking alot better then what she really had any right to with alot of the films undersea creatures looking OK at best and just downright creepy at there absolutely worst.
This film is just an exact carbon copy of the original film which only makes this film feel pointless as all it does is remind you that you could have been watching a much more better film. With this not really being helped by the fact that this film sucks all of the fun and charm out of scenes that had fun and charm in them and even makes chances to things that didn't need changing as they worked well for the characters in the original film and work well enough for the characters in this film as well with the worst change that this film makes is the fact that in the finale instead of it being Eric be the one that goes on to kill Ursula by driving his boat into her something which actually makes sense for his character as he spends alot of time on boats and would there for know how to drive one here in this film it's now Ariel that does it which makes no sense for her character as Ariel isn't the kind of character to harm anyone and because of the fact that she's spent all of her life not on a boat but underwater she would there for not know how to drive a boat and yet this change was made only to make Ariel look stronger when all it does is make no sense where as in the original film both characters came out looking stronger as they both took on Ursula in environments were they would be able to do so and yet here they reverse it so instead of Ariel taking Ursula on in the sea and Eric on the land it's now the other way round which makes no sense.
As a musical this film does work really well as the film does have all of the original songs by Howard Ashman. With all of the films original songs not being that bad altho they do make some changes to the set up of "Under The Sea" which makes no sense as that whole song was about trying to convince Ariel that everything under the sea is better in the human world all the while she's just trying to get away from Sabastian who is singing the song while in this film not only does she stay around for the vast majority of the song but it's now a duet which really does work but at the same time it's still an odd thing to see and the film does have some new songs written by one of this film producers Lin-Manuel Miranda with the worst new song being "The Scuttlebutt" which is just a badly written rap song and out of all of the films songs the best one is still quite easily "Part Of Your World" as that still is a really good song that's really well written and it helps that this song really does give Halle Bailey the chance to really show what she can do from a singing point of view with the second best and most fun song oddly enough being "For The First Time" which is just a really fun song that's also a really well sung song as well.
Villain wise this film really did Ursula fairly decently as it's quite clear that actor Melissa McCarthy is having a fun time going over the top in playing her. However tho at the same time the character is ripped of anything that made her stand out in the first film with the character in the first film being someone who knows how to get what she wants and is kind of like someone who was beautiful when she was younger but now due to her actions has become this hideous beast and she can't really handle that where as this version of the character lacks all of that so much so that she's Ursula in name only but at the same time she is still a fun character with her scenes being some of the most fun scenes in this film as it's in those scenes where the film actually feels like that it's The Little Mermaid again where as in the other scenes in this film it really does just feel like it's The Little Mermaid in name only as at least with the Ursula scenes while yes she could have been written better she's at the very least a somewhat entertaining villain who is fun to see in the film this is despite the fact that this films version of the character really is nothing like the original films version of the character.
Now the this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly two hours and fifteen minuets and fourteen seconds. Which is such a needlessly long running time for this film to have as all this film is doing is retelling the exact same plot as the original film and yet for some reason this film is nearly one hour longer then the original film with the film not even adding any scenes that justify that long of a running with this film not really being helped by the fact that really doesn't have that much plot there to really cover that long of a running time with the added scenes not added to the plot of the film and they therefor come across as being filler scenes that really could have been removed from the overall plot of the film with the same thing being true for two of the films added songs as we don't need "For The First Time" and "Wild Uncharted Waters" don't add anything to either the plot of the film or the characters either and while the film could have used that extended running time to expand upon it's characters to make it's characters come across more fully three dimensional characters the film however doesn't do that and as a result of that is the fact that all of the films characters just come across as being very one dimensional characters but I really will admit that that the film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is romance film that means that I gave to actually talk about the actual romance that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual romance that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film wasn't all that bad. However tho at the exact same time tho it could have been alot better as while yes the film does take the tie to fully develop there relationship which does make sense as there relationship is key to making the whole entire film work but what lets the romance down is the fact that both Halle Bailey and Jonah Hauer-King have next to chemistry with each other with the two of them instead coming across as people that just met each other when they started filming the movie and not like people who are meant to be each others soul mate and as a result of that is the fact that it is hard to buy into there relationship as the two of them just don't have ay kind of chemistry together and while yes the relationship is given the time that it needs to be a more believable relationship but the two people involved with the relationship also need to have chemistry with each other and when you don't have that then it doesn't matter how well developed the relationship is it will always be hard for us the audience to buy into it due to the fact that the two people involved with the relationship have no chemistry with each other in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall like alot of the Disney Love Action Remakes this film to fails in comparison to the original film it's also not the worst remake that Disney have done as that honor will always go to The Lion King 2019 as at the very least this film does try to recapture the tone and spirit of what made the original film work so much in the first place where as it's the opposite that's true for The Lion King 2019 in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that means that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 6.5 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in n this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from the official Disney fandom wiki page and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images really from this very film being the really great the official Disney fandom wiki page this is really because of the fact that really all of the images that I really indeed got and really used from the great the official Disney fandom wiki page really are all really high quality with all the images that are currently up and on the really great the official Disney fandom wiki page really are all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
