Big Trouble In Little China Film Review
Back in the late seventies and early eighties filmmaker John Carpenter was bust making hit film after hit film. While not all of this films were well reviewed when they were first released almost all of them at least back there production budget the same thing however cannot be said for the film that i'm going to be talking about today as when this film came out it didn't make back it's production budget but has gone on to become a cult hit classic and then join me as I review the film that convinced John Carpenter to go back to making independent films with the film in question being called simply just "Big Trouble In Little China" enjoy.
The plot of this film is when his best friends fiancée from a San Francisco airport truck driver Jack Burton and his best friend Wang Chi must rescue her from an evil Chinese street gang before it's far to late. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I im all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad however that's also the issue tho as the plot of this film really isn't as good and as fun as it really could have been with the tone of film being really serious when they could have had a bit more fun with the plot of the film with the plot of this film not really being all that interesting as it is a simple plot and while that is also part of the charm of the plot as well as the plot of this film is enjoyably simple the makers of this film could have made the plot of this film a bit complex in certain areas as well with the plot of this film also being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Kurt Russell as Jack Burton , Kim Cattrall as Gracie Law and Dennis Dun as Wang Chi. Also starring in this film is James Hong as David Lo Pan , Victor Wong as Egg Shen , Kate Burton as Margo Litzenberger , Donald Li as Eddie Lee , Carter Wong as Thunder , Peter Kwong as Rain , James Pax as Lightning , Chao-Li Chi as Uncle Chu , Jeff Imada as Needles and Suzee Pai as Miao Yin.
Now then inters of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. Which really isn't anything that's all that new as while this films cast aren't for that most part at least when this film was first released anyways this films composer and director John Carpenter really does know how to good a great performance out of his cast something that's he's proven time and time again be it from films like Halloween or even They Live for that matter all of his films have for the most part had some really good acting in them with the same thing also being true for this film so much so that it's hard to imagine anybody else playing these roles as this films actors are just so good in there roles with the acting that's in this film not really being helped by the films script as this films script really doesn't give this films cast all that much to work with interms of what it is that there respective characters personalities are even meant to be in the first place which is something that really does lower down the overall quality of the acting that's in this very film.
Doing the CGI for this film is the legends and the really greats that are currently over at Boss Film Studios. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad as even tho this films CGI might seem dated by today's standard that is something that does add to the overall charm of the film with the films more dated CGI not really being helped by not only the technology that was available to the makers of this film at the time that the film was being made but also due to the fact that Boss Film Studios wasn't that big of an effects studio in the first place and as a result of that is the fact that this films was never going to have great looking CGI but to the films credit that turned what could have been a huge disadvantage and turned it into an advantage by having the effects look cheesy and corny on purpose.
This film does bare some resemblance to another film that came out in the exact same year with that film being called The Golden Child. As the plots of both films are apparently strikingly similar to one another with both films having similar themes as well like for example both films have an everyman as the main hero and both films deal with Chinese mysticism with both main characters also being from California as well with this being made all the more weird when you take into account that this films director and composer John Carpenter was also offered the chance to direct The Golden Child but turned it down because of the fact that he was to busy directing this film and while The Golden Child really was the more successful of the two films more then making back it's budget it's also not really that well known of a film where as with this film it's opposite that's true as it didn't even make back it's productions budget and yet it became a cult hit gaining fans thanks to it's video release and The Golden Child really had the advantage of having Eddie Murphy in his prime starring in it as well which would have helped with that films more comedy moments in it.
As was just mentioned this film didn't even make it's production budget of $19 to $25 million dollars with the film instead making a grand total of $11.1 million dollars at the box office. With that kind of low performance really making it a straight forward choice for this films director and composer John Carpenter to return in independent film making and it's because of that we managed to get films like They Live and other classics for example and as take for example They Live allows him to really let loose and be as wild and as creative as he wants to as this film feels like he's being held back by studio notes telling him how to make a fun filled movie when all of his movies up until that point where already fun filled movie and that's because of the fact that John Carpenter was being let loose and doing whatever it was that he needed to do to get the film made where as here it feels like that he's being held back which does have the add on effect of making this film come across as being alot less fun to watch and instead comes across as being a safe and marketable film instead of just being the fun filled film that a film like this one really should have been.
This films comedy is fairly solid with the film having some decent jokes and having some decent one liners as well. While this film doesn't have alot of many funny jokes the ones that it does have really do stand out as being really funny as they come from the characters and they feel like jokes that the characters would indeed make with alot of this film jokes going along way to showing just how strong the friendship is between Jack Burton and Wang Chi with the two of them having some really good banter between but the best joke in the whole entire isn't even a joke as all it is is just three characters casually handing each other one small gun so that they will end up with having the biggest gun in that scene which is just such a funny idea and it makes sense that all three of these characters would do and it's such a simple joke that it really does work in terms of the film as well as it doesn't take away from the tension of the scene rather it makes the scene feel like the calm before the storm as right after that all three characters get into a rather intense gun fight which is just a really solid scene to watch mostly because of the fact we've just had this more comedic moment before it but also because of the fact that it's just a good action scene in it's own right as well.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and thirty nine minuets and forty seven seconds. Which is the absolutely perfect amount of running tome for this film to have as while the film really doesn't have enough there interms of plot to really over that amount of running time it does feel like it's the right amount of running time to have as this is the exact running time that you an action film like this one would have and to this films credit it does for the most part take full advantage of that and while yes this film would have been better if it did have a longer running time as it would have allowed for the films romance between Jack and Gracie to really feel all the more realistic as in the final cut of the film it comes across as something that really does come out of nowhere and feels out of character for both of the characters as well and it really would also allow for all of the films characters to get some sort character development but on the flip side of that is the fact that the plot of the film would getting stretched even thinner then what it already is but I will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is ana action film that means that I gave to actually talk about the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty OK at best. Which isn't a bad thing as this films action is really entertaining but at the same time tho the action in this film could have been alot better then what it already was as on paper this films action should have been balls to the wall fun and nothing more then that and yet because of the fact that this film plays it's action so straight and is afraid to be fun then the action really does suffer because of it as it makes alot of this films action scenes rather boring to watch and while yes we do get some really fun and inventive action scenes in it they are very few and far between with alot of the films action being far to serious for it's own good and that is something that stops what should be a really fun action sequence from being exactly that and it instead makes it chore to sit through with this not really being helped that nothing all that exciting actually happens at all in this films many action scenes either in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall while it's not hard to see why this film has become a cult hit as on paper this film does have all of the markings to be a hit film or even a cult hit film for that matter but for one reason or another the film just really doesn't reach all of that potential and instead it collapses in on itself and becomes something that really isn't that good in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 7 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got al, of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from IMP Awards . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images really from this very film being the really great Google Images this is really because of the fact that really all of the images that I really indeed got and really used from Google Images are all really high quality with all the images that are currently up and on the great Google Images really are all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
