Mythica: Stormbound Film Review
The Mythica franchise was one that caught a few people of guard back in the mid to late twenty ten's however the franchise finished it's five film story back in 2016. Which made it all the more surprising that the franchise would be returning for a new film back in 2022 and as someone who proudly owns all five films on DVD you all just knew that I had to check this film the very first chance that I got and so then join me as I review the film that is pretty much just The Hateful Eight but in a fantasy setting with the film in question being called simply just "Mythica: Stormbound" enjoy.
The plot of this film is a group of strangers arrive at an Inn during a storm and when one of them is killed with magic they have to work out who the killer is before it's far to late. Now then interms of what I personally thought felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad but at the same time tho the plot of this film wasn't all that good either as all this films plot is is basically just that of The Hateful Eight with the only thing added to it is that instead of a western it's now a fantasy film and that's really it with the plot of this missing the mark on what it is that makes a plot like this one work by not giving us any of the great dialog that that film was known for and instead replacing it with dialog that would be right at home on a TV show and not in a feature length film with the plot of this film also being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Adam Johnson as Thane , Nicola Posener as Teela , Will Kemp as Egan and voice acting legend Matthew Mercer as Szorlok. Also starring in this film is Ryann Bailey as Arlin , Dave Martinez as Leyaris ,Lincoln Hoppe, Michael Zuccola, and Caleb J. Spivak in Undaunted: Witnesses Of The Book Of Mormon star Paul Cartwright as Rhistel Kriswood , Nate Morley as Erid , Jersey Boys star Joe Abraham as Giblock , Tatum Langton as Resma and Tod Huntington as Aymon Thadruck.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. However the acting in this film isn't all that good ether which is of course due to the fact that alot of this films cast are mostly either unknown actors are very little known actors who have just a few credits to there name and as a result of that is the fact that of course the acting in this film won't be that good as apart from Matthew Mercer none of this films cast members are named stars and while Matthew Mercer does turn in an good performance it's the rest of the films cast that do let the film down acting wise with the acting that's in this film not really being helped by the fact that the script for this film is just so bad as it gives none of the films cast absolutely nothing to work with interms of what it is that there respective characters personalities are even meant to be in the first place which is something that really does let the film down.
Doing the CGI for this film is the really very little known effects studio that is known as BluFire Studios. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad as these films have never had a huge budget with it most likely being the case for this film as well with this film really making the best use of it's possibly small budget by having very limited CGI and only using it when they absolutely have to do and given how bad this films CGI is is a good thing as this films CGI while it does look better then the effects in the other films still looks pretty bad which isn't the fault of the makers of the film as they only have a small budget to work with but at the same time tho these films are effects heavy and as a result of that is the fact that alot if not most of the films budget really should have gone to the films budget and while yes the makers of this film did spread it's budget out equally given that these are effects heavy films alot of care and attention should have gone to the films effects.
To be frank this film is basically The Hateful Eight in every single way possible as everything right down to the plot and even the location are things that are done in the plot of The Hateful Eight. While yes the original five films did borrow heavily from other fantasy films they at least knew to stay in the realm of fantasy where as with this film they borrowed the plot of a westerns and at times just straight up become a western crime drama all the while abandoning it's fantasy routes and while yes this film is a direct sequel to Mythica: The Iron Claw and as a result of that it is natural that the films would go a in a bit of a different just just due to the fact that the world that the films are set in would have changed so much since the last time we the audience got a chance to see it but that doesn't mean that you have to stop being a fantasy film and instead focus on borrowing elements from The Hateful Eight especially as you could have done all of that and still be a fantasy film just by ditching the Inn setting as that would then allow us the audience the chance to see this world and see what changes have gone in this film and it would allow the film to still firmly be a fantasy film as well.
On paper this film had all of the potential to be one of the best films in this franchise as it had something that the previous films didn't have going for the and that's the fact that this film is being directed by one of the stars of the previous films and as such would know that world better then the writers and producers would. Yet in this case it oddly feels like it's that that's holding it back as this films director Jake Stormoen has only directed one thing previous to this film and that's an episode of the TV show The Outpost and that's really it and that show wasn't that highly received and he hasn't directed any of feature films and has no other directing jobs lined up and as a result of that is that while he does do a good directing this film he can't bring the same amount of energy that he could do as an actor and while brining him on board as a director does make sense in that he does know this world the producers of this film should have gone with one of the directors from the other films as that they way they would get the chance to have there cake and eat it to.
While this film does have some good things going for it like the fact that it does serve as a solid continuation of the series and progresses the characters from the original films in a way that feels natural and organic. However one of the things that it doesn't get wrong is the fact that alot of the films newer characters just aren't that interesting with alot of this films newer characters just coming across as being very note rip off characters of characters from the original film with nothing new added to them to make them standout while the mystery surrounding this film is a solid one the characters themselves could have been alot better as there's nothing to ay of them and yet these are the characters that the franchise is meant to being handed to say whatever it is that you will about the previous films but at least the characters in that film were at least likable characters that were somewhat fully formed characters whereas with this film it's the opposite that's true as thanks to being a rip off of The Hateful Eight none of the films characters come across as being likable and none of them get the chance that they need to shine and as a result of that is the fact that they come across as being very one dimensional characters.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and forty four minuets and nine seconds. Which is pretty much the bogstanderd running time for this franchise and to this film credit the film really does have more then enough there interms of plot to really cover that large amount of running time and again to this films credit ti does make the most that it could have possibly have done with that running time and and while the film would have been better if it did have a much more longer running time as it would then allow the characters the chance to become more fully developed and the chance to really stand out more from each other but as things stand if the film was a tad bit longer it would also be stretching the films plot even thinner then what it already is which would make all of his films issues seem even bigger then what they already are and would really do more harm to the film then it would good but I really will that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is an action film that means that I have to actually talk about the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not bad. However it wasn't all that good either which is pretty par the course with this franchise and it again comes down to the fact that this film most likely didn't have a huge budget as like all of the other films this film was funded through Kickstarter and with that mind while the films action wasn't that good it could have been alot more worse then what we ultimately got as we could have gotten action that is at best laughable and worst just downright horrible and yet we did get action that was passable at best with there being some really entertaining and engaging action sequences all of which were done on what would have been a really small budget with the action in this film looking alot better then what it really had any right to in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall while this film could have been and most likely really should have been alot better as this is a franchise does deserve alot better it's also very par the course for these films as none of these films are that good in the first place but they are all good films in there unique way with the same thing also being true for this film in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've already talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 6.5 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from IMP A wards .
