Guest House Paradiso Film Review
Britain has many classic comedies alot of whom are fairly well known but one of those shows that is kind of an underground hit series also spawned a feature length film. With it being that very film that i'm going to be talking about today and with the series about to turn thirty years old since it's final episode was broadcast next year I thought that now was the absolutely right time to check this film and so then join me as I review the film that features a very young Simon Pegg with the film in question being called simply just "Guest House Paradiso" enjoy.
The plot of this film is the very first thing that's wrong with the film as this film really does have no plot to speak of. Which even for the TV show that this show s based of off really doesn't make that much sense as an episode of the show still has a decent plot for each of it's episodes and yet for some reason the makers of this film chose to give this film next to nothing interms of plot and as a result of that is the fact that the film feels like an extended episode of the show and while the film does indeed try to introduce a plot with an Italian actress trying to escape from her gangster fiancee but by that point it's to little to late as the film spends huge amounts of time with no plot going through and just a bunch of unconnected scenes that add up to nothing and don't play any part in what little plot that this film tries and mostly fails to introduce really late into the films running time with the plot of the film not even being really rather entertaining and as well being not that really rather engaging either in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is this films co-writer Rik Mayall as Richard "Richie" T*at and this films co-writer and director Adrian Edmondson as Edward "Eddie" Elizabeth Ndingombaba. Also starring in this film is Vincent Cassel as Gino Giuseppe Bolognese , Hélène Mahieu as Gina Tortellini Carbonara , Bill Nighy as Mr. Johnson , Kate Ashfield as Ms. Hardy , Simon Pegg as Mr. Nice , Fenella Fielding as Mrs. Foxfur , Lisa Palfrey as Mrs. Nice , Steve O'Donnell as Chef Lardy Barsto , James D'Arcy as Newly Wedded Husband and Kate Loustau as Newly Wedded Wife.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. However that's also the problem as the acting in this film isn't all that good as even tho the film does have alot of really good and in some cases really borderline great actors in this film they still need a good director to help to get a good performance out of them and sadly that's really not what we have here with first time director and franchise co-creator Adrian Edmondson who really doesn't know how to get a good performance with all of the cast in this film just looking lost alot of the time with the acting in this film not really being helped by the fact that this films script is really bad as it gives none of this films cast absolutely nothing to work with interms of what it is that there respective characters personalities are even meant to be in the first place which is something that really does bring down the overall quality of the acting that's in this film.
For what is basically a low budget film this film has a shockingly high amount of really good actors starring in this film. With alot of this films cast either being very well known comedic actors or well go onto become very well known comedic actors alot of whom would go no to work together again in other and better films and yet for alot of them this is the film that first got there name out there and gave them there first real big break in the film industry which does make you wonder just how they managed to get these names in this film as the film really didn't have that big of a budget as the budget for this film was only three million pounds and while that isn't shown on screen it's quite clear that a huge chunk of it went to getting alot of this films cast and while granted they wouldn't have commanded a huge price at the time that this film was being made given that at least two of them were slightly well known names with Fenella Fielding being known for Carry On Screaming and Bill Nighy being known for starring in quiet alot of films and TV shows at the time they both together would have commanded a fairly high price for appearing in this film.
For those of you that don't know this film is based of off the very adult British sitcom Bottom which aired between the 17th September and finished airing on the 10th April 1995 on the UK TV channel BBC Two. With the show following two broke best friends who constantly get into fights with each other which always end in over the top violence and with one of the characters having the last name Hitler and while the show is indeed very adult the movie version more often then not feels alot more tamer then an average episode of the show is which is odd as it's usually the other way around with the show being the more tamer of the two and the movie being alot more adult and heck they even change the last name of Hitler which in the show led to some really funny jokes from the characters and yet for some unknown reason it was changed in the movie this is despite the fact that the show went out of it's way to be offensive to be offend alot of people.
While somethings from the show do remain like the fact that both Richie and Eddie are dumb and really unlikable people. There are alot of things that are changed like the fact that the film now takes place in a bad guest house instead of taking place in Hammersmith in London and the fact that while one of the characters looses there offensive last name another one gains a slightly offensive last name which is in keeping with the show as the show did go out of it's way to offend people and that was something that was lost in translation as this film felt like it was playing to safe and yet when it's this really offensive sitcom that's being adapted safe is the very thing that it shouldn't be as that would be going against the very nature of the show and while it's great seeing Rik and Ade play these truly iconic and very funny character in a feature length film they are the only characters that are worth watching which does make sense as they are playing characters that they played on the show.
The new characters felt alot like the hotel characters from Fawlty Towers only without the charm and the decent scripts to make them endearing and lovable. With the only character who comes across as being somewhat likable is the character of Gina Tortellini Carbonara who was just a fun character but was rather underused for the most part as she only appears every so often in the film and even then doesn't play a huge part in the film until the films third act when the actual plot of the film starts to kick in with the rest of the characters being bland two dimensional characters which could be the very point but the same time the filmmakers really should have made the new characters likable especially as since Richie and Eddie are meant to be really unlikable and yet by not doing that all it does is leave us with a bunch of the characters that we either a) really don't care about as the film gives us no reason to care about these characters or b) a bunch of really unlikable characters as apart from Gina Tortellini Carbonara none of this films characters new or not just aren't that likable.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour ad twenty five minuets and fifty two seconds. Which is pretty much the exact running time that you'd expect a film like this one to have but at the exact time tho this is also a really long running time for this film to have due to the fact that the film really doesn't have a plot in the first place which makes it feel like a series of sketches just stitched together instead of having it feel like a movie and while having it be like a series of sketches works well enough for the the show as even tho the show had a plot it was also a very loose plot but that's not something that you can do with a movie as a movie needs to have a plot and it needs to have a running time that goes with that plot and this film has a small plot and a running time that is longer then what it really should have been as the film really should have only, have been twenty two minuets and as that's the amount of time that this plot demands that it have but I will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is comedy that means that I have to actually talk about the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad but that's also the problem as well. As alot of this films comedy just isn't that good with alot of what made Bottom so painfully funny just not being present in the film or if it is it's done with very early on in the film as alot of the comedy that made Bottom so painfully funny was the over slapstick violence between Richie and Eddie and yet there they get into that within the first twenty minuets of the film when that should have been much more later on in the film and the self deprecating humor that made the show standout just isn't present in the film but when we do get a laugh tho it really is a good joke in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall this film really isn't all that good with the film lacking the charm that makes the show still so funny to watch even twenty nine years after it's final broadcast with the film lacking alot of the jokes that made the show standout and still very painfully funny to watch in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 5 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from Amazon . Co . Uk and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images this film being the great and the really truly legendary Google Images this is because alot of not all of the images that I really got for this review and that are still of course currently up and really are on the really great and legendary Google Images with them all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
