Ghostbusters: Afterlife Film Review
Legacy sequels are a thing that very rarely if every work and recapture the magic of the original film which makes it all the more special when one comes along that manages to do just that. With the film that i'm going to be talking about today being one such film as after the 2016 disaster of a Ghostbusters film no one would have blamed the studios if they chose not to make another Ghostbusters and yet that's exactly what we did and because of that we got was really a true sequel to the 1984 film and so then join me as I review the film that proves that legacy sequels really can be done and done well with the film in question being called simply just "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" enjoy.
The plot of this film is when Egon dies of a heartattack his family move into a farmhouse where they discover somethings that they never knew about him and have to stop a ghost from taking the world once and for all. Now the interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good with the plot of the film managing to not only recapture the exact tone and spirit pf the original film but also do something new and different with what could have been as a really tried and worn out plot line but at the same time tho it doesn't go as far as it could have done with all of it's new ideas instead relying on an old villain to be the main threat and not doing something that ties in with the plot of the film with the plot of this film also being really rather entertaining and as well as being really rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Carrie Coon as Callie Spengler , Finn Wolfhard as Trevor Spengler and Mckenna Grace as Phoebe Spengler. Also starring in this film is Logan Kim as Podcast , Celeste O'Connor as Lucky Domingo , Paul Rudd as Gary Grooberson , J. K. Simmons as Ivo Shandor , Olivia Wilde as Gozer , Shohreh Aghdashloo as The Voice Of Gozer , Bill Murray as Peter Venkman , Dan Aykroyd as Raymond "Ray" Stantz , Ernie Hudson as Winston Zeddemore , Annie Potts as Janine Melnitz and Sigourney Weaver as Dana Barrett.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With all of this films cast both new and returning turning in some really good performances with all of the returning cast members very easily slipping back into character as if they'd been playing these characters for decades and just never stopped playing them with all of the new cast members more then holding there own acting wise when it comes to acting against the older returning characters which surely couldn't have been an easy task given who is starring in this film and yet this films new cast members do it with such great ease with the acting in this film really being helped by the fact that the script for this film is just so good that all the films cast have to do s just say the lines as they are written and a good performance will come out of them really naturally.
Doing the CGI for this film is Double Negative , Moving Picture Company , Crafty Apes and Pix Entertainment. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good with the CGI in this film being alot better then what it really had any right to be as they straight up copy and update upon the style set up in the first film and that given all the of the CGI enhancements that have happened in the years we get alot of good looking effects that feel like there right at home with the original and while the 2016 reboot had some impressive CGI it didn't look like that it fitted in the world of Ghostbusters where as in this film the opposite is true and while this film has some really bad CGI in it those are very few and far between with the film having more good then bad looking CGI in it.
Unlike the 2016 this film is actually respectful to what came before as well as setting up what could happen with the franchise moving forward. As justin the pre-titles scene we only see two things from the previous films that being the ghost trap and the PKE Meter both of which play a huge important part in the films plot and as a result it makes sense for them to be set up that early in the films plot and yet when compared with the 2016 film which is more focused on hammering in references to the previous films then it is in telling a good story or even disrespecting what came before it by having the original actors act in a way that's disrespectful to the original film and yet in this film they find a balance between tipping there hats to the past thanks to the original characters coming back and acting in character but it also sets up the future characters who could lead the franchise moving forward if the original cast choose not to return for any future installment something which the 2016 film also refused to do.
One of the things that I didn't like about this film is the fact that they reused Gozer as the films main villain. As it's something that felt like it was a crutch for the film as it was relaying a bit to much on nostalgia for the first film instead of creating a new and interesting villain that would help to set this film apart from all pf the other films in this franchise and that was something that the 2016 film got right as while yes they did hint at Gozer at the end of the film they also had an original villain which helps to set that film apart from all of the other films and yet with this film they reintroduce a villain that is more well known from the first film which is a great way to tie this film back to the original film but at the same time this film already has that connection thanks to the original cast coming back with this not really being helped by the fact that Gozer really doesn't have much of an plan in this film outside of getting revenge on the Ghostbusters which doesn't make that interesting of a villain when compared to the original film where she did have a clear end goal of trying to take over the world and even took active steps to archive that goal all pf which made her really look like a more interesting villain.
The films new characters whilst not that interesting for the most part are still some really enjoyable characters. With the new characters in this film being basically cardboard cut out characters with nothing that really makes them stand out all that much but on the flip side of that is the fact that the characters in the original film weren't that well drawn out either and yet they still became more likable thanks to the cast being genuinely likable people with the same thing also being true for this film as well as it's the cast that make the characters more likable then what they actually are as while alot of them are given key character flaws that they have to overcome those flaws don't feel unique to that character as they feel like there flaws that could come from any character and the results would still be the same but the fact that there given flaws does also go along way to proving that the makers of this film knew how to make good and memorable characters in the first place.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly two hours and three minuets and fifty six seconds. Which is a solid running time for this film as the film really does have more then enough there inter,ms of plot to really cover that really large amount of running time with the film not really having alot of filler scenes as alot of the scenes in this film do add something to the plot of the film which would make it hard for any scene to be cut from this film but with that being said this film does also feel like it's alot short then what it actually is as character arcs either get completed far to quickly or are just dropped all together all of which are things that wouldn't be there case if the film has even a slightly longer running time but if the film did have a slightly longer running time it would then be stretching the plot of the film really thin but I will admit that this film really does have some really good pacing to it tho.
So now then as this is a comedy that means that I have to actually talk about the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual comedy that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good for the most part. As while the film does have some really funny jokes in it the film doesn't have that many laugh out loud moments as the film does have alot of really bad jokes that felt forced almost as if the makers of the film new that there wasn't a joke in the film and so they just wrote down the first joke that they came up with it but at the same time alot of the original characters do get alot of laughs and the newer cast do get some decent jokes as well just not that many of them and the films does give Ray a really good and funny call back joke to the first film which was really funny in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall this film is a good example of how to do a legacy sequel and do it all well as it not only tips it hat to the past in a respectful and dignified way which does make sense when you take into account that the director and co-writer of this film is also a fan of the original film but is also the son of the original films director and producer and as a result of this it really does make sense that this film would be respectful to the original film in y freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that means that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 7.5 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from the official Ghostbusters fandom wiki page and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images this film being the really great the official Ghostbusters fandom wiki page this is because all of the images that I got for this review and that are still and of course currently up and really are on the really great the official Ghostbusters fandom wiki page with them all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
