The Last Airbender Film Review
Sadly it's not uncommon for a successful TV series to get turned into a movie infact it happens all the time. What is uncommon tho is for that TV show to still be fresh in the minds of people when the movie not only enters production but also gets released as was really the case with the movie that i'm going to review for you all today as this is a movie that just straight up copies the entire first season of the show only without any of the heart and charm and that made that first season such a hit with both kids and adults in the first place and so then join me as I review the film that really nerfed the Earth Benders with the film in question being called simply just "The Last Airbender" enjoy.
The plot of this film is a young boy is destined to become the Avatar someone who has mastered all four bending arts and to help do so he and his friends have to find him a teacher to help teach him one of the arts that being the art of Water Bending all whilst avoiding the evil Fire Nation. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really bad as all the -plot of this film is is just a hacked up version of the plot of the shows first season only it really lacks so much about what made that first seasons plot work so much in the first place with the plot of this film not really being entertaining nor is it really rather engaging either in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Noah Ringer as Aang , Dev Patel as Prince Zuko , Nicola Peltz as Katara and Jackson Rathbone as Sokka. Also starring in this film is Shaun Toub as General Iroh , Aasif Mandvi as Admiral Zhao , Seychelle Gabriel as Princess Yue , Cliff Curtis as Fire Lord Ozai , Summer Bishil as Princess Azula , Francis Guinan as Master Pakku , Isaac Jin Solstein as Haru , Dee Bradley Baker as Appa , Keong Sim as Tyro , John Noble as The Voice Of The Dragon Spirit , Katharine Houghton as Kanna and Damon Gupton as Monk Gyatso.
Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty laughably bad. With all of this films cast members turning in performances that are just plain old bad with all of this films cast being really wooden and almost robotic in there responses with the same thing also being true for the films child actors as well who just don't breathe live into there characters at all none of this is of course the fault of the cast as there only being told what to do rather it's the fault of this films producer , writer and director M. Night Shyamalan who just has no clue how to direct his cast with this not really being helped by the fact that this films script is just so bad as it doesn't really give the films cast anything to work with interms of what there characters personalities are even meant to be in the first place.
Doing the CGI for this film is Industrial Light & Magic , DIVE , Svengali Visual Effects , New Deal Studios and Rodeo FX. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad but that's also the problem as this films CGI isn't all that good either with this film having alot of really bad looking CGI effects that might have looked good all the way back 2010 but really havn't aged well all of these years later and while this film does have some decent looking CGI effects in this film the film has alot more bad looking CGI effects then it does good looking ones with the films fire effects being the worst ones as they just look fake and at best they look really cheap looking.
Unlike alot of shows that get a movie adaptation this movie is quite literally just the shows first season and really nothing more then that. However as this film is just telling a shorter version of the shows first season the film looses all of the heart that made that first season so good in the first place which wouldn't be a bad thing if they replaced it with something that actually advanced the overall experience however they don't do that they just show us more watered down and poorly written and acted scenes from the shows first season with the only difference is that now it's in live action when it quite clearly should have stayed in animation and because of that the film either looses good scenes from the first season , covers them in lazy voice over and or just straight up doesn't show them at all all of which makes you wonder why the makers of this film chose to go this way with the film as it would have been so much more better if they just adapted one of the shows first season episodes as that would have made alot more sense instead of just remaking and really cutting down upon the entire first season of the show.
Speaking of the shows first season as was mentioned at the very start of this review the film really does nerf the Earth Benders. As as we see in the show the Earth Benders are capable of building entire working tanks out of earth and there so powerful that when the Fire Nation took them over they had a whole bunch of them imprisoned on a metal ship out in the middle of the ocean so they couldn't do anything even if they wanted to whereas here not only does it take several of them to move a pebble but there now imprisoned in there own village which is made of earth the very thing that they need in order to do Earth Bending and yet for some strange they openly choose not do so this right here just makes them look like cowards instead of the awsome people that we got in the show as in the original show they couldn't Earth Bend as they were on a metal ship and yet here there openly choosing not to attack there guards which would free them for no reason whatsoever.
To this films credit it does some things that are working in it's favor like the fact that visually the film does look nice and the fact the film is at least so bad that it's good. However that second thing means that alot of people aren't watching the film because it's a good film as there instead watching it because they want to see how not to make a film version of this truly iconic story and just because the film looks visually nice it's not an excuse for a good story with good characters that you like and want to see more off all of which this film doesn't have as the film gives us no reason to care for these characters nor does it make these characters likable which is fine for a character like Prince Zuko or Fire Lord Ozai as those are meant to be unlikable characters but the film doesn't give us a reason to care for any of the three main heroes either as alot of what made them likable in the show is cut out or just covered in voice over form all of which do more harm to this film then they do help it and both of which are more important then being a film that's so bad that it's good or then being a film that's very nice to look at from a visual standpoint.
Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and forty three minuets and thirteen seconds. Which while it is a solid running time for this film to have it's still alot shorter of a running time that this film really should have had as this film should have a had a much more longer running time in order to fully do the story and the characters justice and infact if the film had a longer running time it would mean that the film could fully develop it's characters which in turn could have made them alot more likable and that is something that would have helped the film out in the longer run but on the flip of side is the fact that it would have made the films issues all the more like major issues then what they already are but I will admit that this film really does have some really solid pacing to it tho.
So now then since this is an action film that means that I have to actually talk about the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad. As the film does have some really creative looking action scenes in them however the film does have some issues when it comes to it's action like the fact that the action in the film can't be as good as the action in this show as the film is live action and is therefore bound by physics where the show is animated and could therefor do whatever it wants to do action wise and the second is the fact that the cast just don't look comfortable doing the action in this film with alot of them just looking like that they really have no idea what there doing in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall while there have been really alot of red flags coming out about the new live action show this new show really can't be as bad as this movie even tho just like this movie the new show also really doesn't have the original creatives involved in anyway whatsoever which really is a huge red flag when it comes to this franchise in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that really does mean that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 4 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from the official Netflix fandom wiki page , IMP Awards . Com and Google Images. With my personally preferred website to use to get images this film being Google Images this is because all of the images that I got for this review and that are still of course currently up and really are on the really great Google Images with them all being really fairly high in quality and as well as them all really being fairly high in definition.
