Dumbo 2019 Film Review

 

I think that it's safe to say that alot of us really do hate these live action Disney remakes which for some strange reason keep on getting made and keep on making a ton of money at the box office. With alot of these live action remakes or reimaginings as their now being called being nothing more then a heartless and soulless version of the original with the very film that i'm about to review for you all today being a very good example of that and so then join me as I review the film that just doesn't understand what made the original film work in the first place with the film in question being called simply just "Dumbo" enjoy.

The plot of the film is a young baby elephant who is born with large ears has to escape from an evil circus owner and reunite with it's mother. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really bad as while this kind of plot might work for other films and for others characters it's not one that works for Dumbo as it's far to complicated of a plot in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Starring in this film is Colin Farrell as Holt Farrier , Michael Keaton as V.A. Vandevere and Danny DeVito as Maximilian "Max" Medici. Also starring in this film is Eva Green as Colette Marchant , Alan Arkin as J. Griffin Remington , Nico Parker as Milly Farrier , Finley Hobbins as Joe Farrier , Roshan Seth as Pramesh Singh , DeObia Oparei as Rongo , Joseph Gatt as Neils Skellig , Douglas Reith as Sotheby , Sharon Rooney as Miss Atlantis , Zenaida Alcalde as Catherine The Greater and Michael Buffer as Baritone Bates.

Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty not that bad for the most part. As the adult actors do turn in some rather solid performances but what lets the overall quality of the acting down is the fact that the films kid actors just turn in bland performances with this not really being helped by the fact that the films script is just so bad that it would be hard for any actor to turn in a great performance as this films script doesn't give the actors in this film a whole lot to work interms of what their respective personalities even are.

Doing the CGI for this film is the legends and the greats that are currently over at Moving Picture Company , Framestore , Rodeo FX , Rising Sun Pictures , RISE Visual Effects Studios , Atomic Arts , Dirty Looks , BOT VFX and Mist VFX Studio. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual CGI that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty the best aspect of the film as this films CGI was really good with Dumbo himself looking like he was actually there on set and while there are a few dodgy looking CGI effects in this film those don't really represent the overall majority of the CGI that's to be found in this film.

This film is lacking the one thing that made and still does make the original film standout and that's heart. As this film has no heart to it with a good example of that being the Baby Mine scene which in the original film was a powerful impactful moment between a mother and her son and yet in this film all of that is stripped away from it simply by having the song by sung by a character that we hardly know which defeats the purpose of the song as the song is meant to be sung by a loved one to their child with the song itself being about a mother that's comforting her son and yet by having the song be sung by a complete stranger it robs the song and the film of it's key emotional core something which is key something that really into making a Dumbo film not only work but work really well and making you actually care for the character as well.

For some reason the makers of this film chose to make Dumbo himself feel alot more like a side character in this own movie. With the films human cast of characters getting alot more screen time then Dumbo himself gets which really shouldn't be the case as the film isn't named after one of the human characters it's named after Dumbo himself and yet while all of the films characters are really underdeveloped characters it's Dumbo himself who gets the worse end of it as he doesn't really get a chance to show us what his personality is in the first place and when you take into account that the whole film revolves around Dumbo and his mother something which is also really underdeveloped it just goes to show you that the makers of this film had no idea what they were doing in the first place and heck it's the human characters and not Dumbo that go through forced characters changes which again shouldn't be the case. 

I will give this film some credit as it does try to have some sweet and funny moments in it the issue is tho. Is that those moments come to little to late with most of them not really working as the films characters aren't fully established and so when they do do something goofy or funny while the joke itself is funny we the audience have no way of knowing of if that character is acting in character or not because of the fact that the characters aren't that well defined which does make sense as this film was written by Ehren Kruger who wrote the dreadful Scream 3 and five Transformers sequels all of which have characters that aren't written that well and all of them are films that are just badly written with bad alot of bad comedy in them.

Now then this film has /had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and fifty one minuets and fifty six seconds. Which is so much longer then what this film really does need to be as while it is telling a different story from the first film this film really doesn't have enough of it's own story to cover that large amount of running time even with all of the padding ad pointless things that it sets up but never pays off what make this worse is the fact that the film could have spent that time setting up it's characters better and yet it doesn't and as such this film really does feel like a chore to sit through especially when you compare t to the original which is always a joy to sit through not really helping things is the fact that this film really does has some fairly bad pacing to it as well.

So now then this film is an action film which means tat I have to actually talk about the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film and well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual action that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film, was in all honesty really good. Which is a shame because you don't really expect or even want there to be action in a Dumbo and yet for some reason that's exactly what this films has and while the action is very visually impressive to look at it's also something that shouldn't be in a Dumbo movie in the first place as it's something that doesn't work with the films basic story in my freaking opinions anyways / at least / at least.

Overall does it really need saying but this film is just a heartless and soulless remake that has all of the iconography there but doesn't understand what made it work in the first place in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now then i've talked about all of the good and well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review ad as such that means that this film earns itself a grand old score of exactly a 6 out of 10 from me.
