Suzume Film Review

 

There are so few names that are bound to get both anime fans and none anime fans alike excited for their next. Well one of those names has just released his new movie and with the movie breaking all sorts of records over in Japan and given who is writing and directing this movie you all just knew that I had to check this movie the very first chance that I got and so then join me as I review the film that is the newest film from Makoto Shinkai with the film in question being called simply just "Suzume" enjoy.

The plot of this film is when she accidentally moves a stone cat a girl names Suzume accidentally puts the whole of Japan into danger and must travel across Japan in order to find the cat and convince it to return to stone form before it's far to late. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual plot that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good and this film was in all honesty really good and this films plot was also rather engaging as well in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Starring in this film is Nanoka Hara as Suzume Iwato , Hokuto Matsumura as Sōta Munakata and Ann Yamane as Daijin and Sadaijin. Also starring in this film is Eri Fukatsu as Tamaki Iwato , Kana Hanazawa as Tsubame Iwato , Kotone Hanase as Chika Amabe , Matsumoto Hakuō II as Hitsujirō Munakata , Sairi Itō as Rumi Ninomiya , Shōta Sometani as Minoru Okabe , Aimi as Miki and Ryunosuke Kamiki as Tomoya Serizawa.

Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good. With all of this films cast members turning in some really good performances and what helps the performances in this film is this films script which is so good that all the actors have to do is just say the words as there written and boom a good performances would come out naturally.

Ding the animation for this film is the legends and greats that are currently over at CoMix Wave Films who have done the animation for all of Makoto Shinkai's films. Now then interms of what I personally thought / felt about the actual animation that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual animation that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film was in all honesty really good which for a film by Makoto Shinkai is to be expected and this film is no exception to that.

One of the things that I noticed while watching this film is the fact that it very well could easily be tuned into a three or even four episode anime miniseries. As this film is already fairly episodic in nature anyway with the two main characters just going from location to location and as such it would be very easy to turn this film into an anime TV series and given the advantages of a TV show you could then delve deeper into the characters and make them more fully fleshed out characters which is something that the film just doesn't do.

As I said this film doesn't fully flesh out all of it's characters while the two main leads are fully fleshed out it's the supporting characters that barely get any attention. With Suzume's Aunt and Sōta's best friend Tomoya Serizawa only getting the personality traits of disapproving parental figure for the Aunt and cool best friend for Tomoya Serizawa which doesn't make them interesting all it does is make them bland and boring and while that might not seem like an issue at first but it does become an issue when you realise that they play a really fairly decent part in this films third act. 

Rather shockingly for a Makoto Shinkai movie this film does feature quite alot of comedy and even more shockingly this film can actually be quite funny. With this film getting alot of good jokes just out of certain situation which i'm not going to spoil because I want you all to go out and see this film but I will say that all of the jokes that you could get out of that one situation they tell in this movie and all of them not only and but they land hard just because they are so fresh and they are so different that you can't help but laugh at them and it really does help that this films jokes come from the characters and so they are really character driven and because the main leads are so well defined you can buy into the fact that they would make a joke like that.

Now then this film has / had an exact grand total running time of exactly one hour and fifty nine minuets and fourteen seconds. Which I will very much admit is a bit on the long side for this film as this film is very episodic in nature and so you get alot of scenes that are just rehashes of other scenes in the movie and as such this movie really could have been trimmed down by about i'd say anywhere between ten to twenty minuets just so that way you don't get alot of scenes that are just rehashes of previous scenes and as such that would also help out quite alot with this films really fairly bad pacing as well.

So now then since this is a drama that means that I have to actually talk about the actual drama that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual drama that's actually featured / presented to us n this very film was in all honesty not that bad. Altho they try to shoehorn in something at the very last minuet which hadn't been built up or even hinted at at all and that does really effect the drama in this film as it's something that came out of nowhere where as all the rest of the drama was built up rather well often leading to some really great scenes in this movie in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.

Overall this was a really great and was very easily on par with Weathering With You for me and given that this film is the fourth-highest-grossing film of 2022 in Japan and the fourth-highest-grossing Japanese film of all time I really do hope that it has the same kind of success in America as it is that good of a film in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. now then i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this very film in this very review and as such that means that this very film really does earn itself a grand old score of exactly a 9.5 out of 10 from me.
