West Side Story 2021 Film SPOILER FREE!!!!!!!!!! Film Review
Ladies and gentlemen remakes and new adaptations of already established properties are sadly very freaking common place in cinemas today and well another one has just been released. However what makes this remake / adaptation stand out from above the rest is the fact that it's being directed by the great Steven Spielberg and so then join me as I give you my SPOILER FREE film review of the film that is just a fresh adaptation of Romeo & Juliet and nothing more then that with the film in question being called simply just "West Side Story" enjoy.
The plot of this film is really hard to talk since it basically has no actual plot to speak of whatsoever which is the first of many issues that I personally had with this freaking film. Since without an actual plot your film looses it's meaning to exist and so without having an actual plot to speak this film has no reason t exist other then to come across as being a soulless cash cow of a film in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Starring in this film is Ansel Elgort as Tony , Rachel Zegler as María , Ariana DeBose as Anita and David Alvarez as Bernardo. Also starring in this film is Mike Faist as Riff , Rita Moreno as Valentina , Brian d'Arcy James as Officer Krupke , Corey Stoll as Lieutenant Schrank , Josh Andrés Rivera as Chin , Iris Menas as Anybodys , Mike Iveson as Glad Hand , Jamila Velazquez as Meche , Annelise Cepero as Provi , Yassmin Alers as Lluvia , Jamie Harris as Rory , Maddie Ziegler as Velma and Curtiss Cook as Abe.
Now then as for what I personally thought / felt about the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this very film well then in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual acting that's actually featured / presented to us in this film was really freaking good. Which given that this film was being directed by the great Steven Spielberg really shouldn't come as an absolute surprise to absolutely anybody whatsoever since all of his films even his very few bad ones always have good acting in them and so then it only makes sense that this film would also have some really freaking good acting within it as well then in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Now then this film is also kind of a passion project for it's director Steven Spielberg since the director has said that one the albums that he grew up was the original cast recording of West Side Story. Which to this films credit getting somebody who is a genuine fan of the property that they are adapting a good thing as they would hopefully know better then anybody what it is that the fans would want and what it is that makes this property so beloved to so many freaking people in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
So now then this film is more of a remake of the 1957 Broadway original stage production then it is a remake of the 1961 musical feature film adaptation. Which is basically marketing's way of saying that there not remaking the original film even that's basically what they are doing which considering that the original film won the OSCAR for best picture it really does beg the question of why remake or re-adapt this film and property since your never even going to come close to even topping the original film in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Now then if there was one word that I could use to describe this film that one word would be boring because that's exactly what this film is it's boring. What makes this film boring is the fact that it's main characters all each have the personality of a blank of wood and the film has no real storyline to speak of and so all your doing is your just sitting there watching a bunch of uninteresting characters just go about they day to day lives and that's not fun nor it's interesting it's just flat out boring as all heck in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Now then this film is meant to be a romance film and while the romance in this film is handled very well it's not handled as well as it perhaps could or even should been. Which isn't a knock against the film at all it's just that I personally didn't really buy this romance at all despite both actors having some great chemistry together which is a shame because I really do buy these people together as a couple if only there romance in this film was handled just a little bit better and not in stereotypical rival gang members fall in love in a musical kind of way in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
So now then this film has / had a grand total running time of at the very least two hours and thirteen minuets and seven seconds. I have to say at least because I watched this film using "other methods" and the film just cut of at the two hours and thirteen minuets and and seven seconds mark and I cannot find a much longer but either way this film is way to freaking long for a musical since you very easily could have told this films "story" in one hour and thirty minuets and nothing of importance to the films actual "plot" would need to have been lost at all in my freaking opinions anyways / at least.
So then since this film is a musical film after all that means that I have to actually talk about the actual songs that are actually featured / presented to us in this very film and well in all honesty I in all honesty personally thought / felt that the actual songs that are actually featured / presented to us in this very film are actually pretty freaking good. Which shouldn't come as an absolute surprise to absolutely anybody whatsoever as the co-writer for all of this films songs was of the course and the late and the most certainly great Stephen Sondheim who wrote this films songs along with Leonard Bernstein and both of them used a song that was written by Fèlix Astol i Artés and Lola Rodríguez de Tió with this films song being genuinely being really freaking good with my favourite song being "America" in my personal freaking opinions anyways / at least.
Overall this film is a boring and predictable mess of a film that just can't capture the magic of both the broadway stage production and i've never even seen both the original film and the original broadway stage production and even I can tell that this film is inferior to both versions of this exact same story in my freaking opinions anyways / at least. Now i've talked about all of the good and as well as all of the bad things that are in this film in this very review and as such that means that this very film erns itself a grand old score of exactly a 4.5 out of 10 from me.
Now then as for where I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review well then boys and girls and as well as ladies and gentlemen I personally got all of the images that I personally used in this very review from the official West Side Story fandom wiki page and from Goole Images. With my personally referred website to use to get the images that are actually from the actual film itself and that I actually used in this very review being the official West Side Story fandom wiki page and this is simply because Google Images actually has a wide / vast selection of images from this film and plus all of the images that are currently featured / up and on the official West Side Story fandom wiki page are all fairly high in quality and as well as being fairly freaking high in freaking definition.
