The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie Film Review

 

Animation fans one of the modern icons of modern cartoons is easily that of Spongebob Squarepants with the show having been starts in 1999 and is still going strong to this very day. As such it was only naturel that the show and character would spawn / receive his own movie and in 2004 that's exactly what we got and so join me as I review the film that launched the Spongebob Squarepants film franchise with the film itself / in question being called simply just "The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie" enjoy.

The plot of this movie is Plankton steals the crown of King Neptune and frames Mr. Krabs and it's up to both Spongebob Squarepants and his dumb friend Patrick Star to save Mr. Krabs and their town and their friends before it's far to late. Now then in terms of what I personally thought about the plot of this film in all honesty I personally thought that the plot of this film was really freaking epic and it's certainly something that one would expect to see in a Spongebob Squarepants movie and it really does help that the plot of this film is not really enjoyable but is also really well told in my opinion anyways / at least.

Starring in this film is Tom Kenny as SpongeBob SquarePants and Gary the Snail and Bill Fagerbakke as Patrick Star. Also starring in this film is Clancy Brown as Mr. Krabs , Rodger Bumpass as Squidward Tentacles, Mr. Lawrence as Plankton , Alec Baldwin as Dennis , Black Widow star Scarlett Johansson as Princess Mindy , Jeffrey Tambor as King Neptune , Jill Talley as Karen and David Hasselhoff as himself.

As for what I thought about the acting that's featured / presented to us in this film well in all honesty I thought that the acting that's featured / presented to us in this film was really freaking good. Which shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone since the acing in anything to do with Spongebob Squarepants has always been really good and since this film uses the exact same voice cast as the show it goes without saying that all of the returning voice actors do a really good job in this movie / film and plus all of the new / guest actors do a really good job in this film as well in my very humble and in my very honest opinion anyways / at least.

Doing the animation for this film is Rough Draft Korea who are the only studio who i can confirm did the animation for this film since there's no animation company listed on the films IMDB page and i'm to lazy to check through over eight minuets of the films ending credits. So yeah as for what I thought about the animation that's featured / presented to us in this very film in all honesty the animation that's featured / presented to us in this film / movie is really good and you can tell that this film had a not only a huge animation budget but also got visual upgrade from the animation that is seen in the actual show itself since everything from the character designs to the character animation and everything that's inbetween not only looks better there's also of really fluid movements especially when it comes to the character animation which is somethin that you don't really get to see in any episode of the Spongebob Squarepants TV show / TV series. 

Like I said at the start of this very review Spongebob Squarepants as both a cartoon character and as a TV series has / have become very iconic in pop / popular culture and heck i'd go as far to say that this show is for very late nineties / 2000's kids as to what The Simpsons was /were for the late 1980's / early 1990's kids. Simply both shows are very iconic and both shows are now so ingrained in / with pop culture that's honestly to remember a time where either show didn't exist because that's how ingrained into pop culture both Spongebob Squarepants and The Simpsons well and truly are in my opinion anyways / at least.

Now then i've been fairly complimentary about this film thus far but there are some things that I personally didn't like about the film with the first of which being that the show's other main characters have very little to know impact on the plot of this movie whatsoever with characters like Sandy Cheeks and Mrs. Puff only showing up for two scenes in the entire movie and that's and those two scenes don't do either character justice in my opinion anyways/ at least. The other thing that I didn't like about this film is the fact that it takes could have been a cool sort of mystery and instead this film goes with the obvious villain which does kind of make sense since Plankton is sort of the main antagonist of the show and so it makes sense that he would be the main antagonist of the movie but at the same time you could have done this really cool mystery subplot with all of the shows other main characters trying to figure out who took King Neptune's crown all the meanwhile Spongebob and Patrick are basically doing what they do in this movie which is try to get King Neptune's crown back from a supposedly really dangerous place.

Just like with "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" this film blends live action footage with 2D hand drawn animation really freaking well and I don't just mean that it was good in 2004 but it's bad now. No I mean that it still really does hold really freaking well and heck they even had some scenes where the animated characters are interacting with a live action background it honestly had me wondering how in the hell that they achieved that effect because it looked so freaking good and it made me wonder why in the heck doesn't Hollywood have more animated films where the animated characters interact with live action elements because it's done well it can in all honesty look really freaking good in my opinion anyways / at least.

Now then this film has a grand total running time of one hour and twenty seven minuets and fifteen seconds and well if i'm being really freaking honest here people this film in all honesty felt way to short. Since there's more then / than enough story here to cover at the very least one hour and thirty five to possibly even one hour and forty five minuets and if this film did have a slightly longer running time then the film could develop not only it's story but also the characters that are introduced in this film and those same new characters that suffer the most due to how short this film is since none of the new characters that are introduced in this film are given any kind of personality and as such the characters just come of as flat , weak and as very two dimensional characters.

Now then boys and girls since this film is a comedy film after all and so that therefor means that I have to personally talk about the jokes / comedy that are featured / resented to us in this film and well if i'm being honesty the jokes / comedy that are featured / presented to us in this film are so / really good. This is because alot of the jokes feel more character driven and because we know all of the returning characters really well at this point and so we know that it's going to be really funny when Spongebob Squarepants and Patrick Star struggle to sing the Goofy Goober song because it would get them beat because that's a joke that those two characters would make in that certain situation . 

Overall this was a really good movie and it's not that hard to see why this film has 78% audience approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes because this film is in all honesty the freaking good and while yes there are some bad things that are in this film those bad things don't over shadow the good things that are in this film. Now then i've talked about all of the good and well as all of the bad things that are in this film in very review and as such this film gets a 7.5 out of 10 from me.
