Your Name Dubbed Review
Now then anime fans depending on where your seeing this it's either been a few months or over a year since I last talked about an anime film and while plenty have been released in the meantime none have really grabbed me and so I haven't had the urge to sit down and watch one. That said while I have indeed already taken a look at this film in the past i'm re-reviewing it because i'm not happy with either the quality of the images or the quality of the review and again depending on where your seeing this review I might keep both up or I might not but nonetheless here is my review of the anime film that took the world by storm 2016's "Your Name" enjoy.
The plot of the film is Mitsuha a girl living in the country and Taki a boy from Tokyo find themselves switching bodies and over the course of a few months find themselves falling in love with each other but there is something even greater then distance keeping them apart. I'll admit that I found the story of the film to be it's weakest aspect don't get me wrong it's still a good story but at the same it wasn't as engaging as I wanted it to be or as it perhaps could have been.
Starring in the dubbed version of the film is Michael Sinterniklaas as Taki and Stephanie Sheh as Mitsuha. Also starring in the film are Kyle Hebert as Katsuhiko , Cassandra Morris as Sayaka , Ben Pronsky as Tsukasa , Ray Chase as Shinta , Laura Post as Ms. Okudera , Glynis Ellis as Hitoha Miyamizu , Catie Harvey as Yotsuha Miyamizu , Scott Williams as Toshiki Miyamizu and Katy Vaughn as Yukari Yukino.
The acting in the film I felt to be really good with all of the actors truly giving standout performances which for an anime dub is really an impressive feet since the animation is already done and so the actors have to match there lip movements perfectly as well as turn in a solid performance. As such you could easily forgive the actors for not giving a solid performance but no they all killed it in this film which is for me at least a great thing.
The animation for the film was done by CoMix Wave Films who as far as I can tell have worked on every film directed by Makoto Shinkai but I could be wrong. The animation was one of the many things that I got alot or praise when this film first came out and yeah it's not hard to see why since this film is stunning to look at hell i'd go as far to say that the animation in this film is a work of art like you could take any frame of this film and pass it of as a work of art it's that good.
I hated the fact that there are basically two montage scenes in this film with the first one acting more as a traditional anime opening and the second one just being the characters swapping bodies. I get why they had the traditional anime opening montage in this film but we don't really need to see a montage of the characters swapping bodies since it really doesn't give us anything that you couldn't show in any of the other scenes it's just there so they could have another song in the film and that's it and sadly that's not good enough.
Now there is somewhat of Makoto Shinkai Cinematic Universe forming here because characters from his previous film seem to show up in whatever his current film is. Which yes does mean that both Taki and Mitsuha make an appearance in Weathering With You and in Your Name we have the main characters from The Garden Of Words appear with the female protagonist Yukari Yukino appearing as the teacher of Mitsuha and the male protagonist Takao Akizuki makes a silent cameo near the end of the film.
Shinkai has said that he doesn't bother with the timelines of his films so I really wouldn't bother trying to work out how long has passed between appearances because chances are your wrong. However I think that it's cool that he takes the time to include these easter eggs for his fans and honestly it gives us all another reason to go back and watch these works of art simply to see which characters make an appearance and who doesn't.
Now while the idea of characters swapping bodies isn't a new idea how this film handles it to me feels fresh and new. Since they add in a great twist i'm still not going to spoil and I never will (at least in this version of the review) simply because it's something that you all need to see but just the idea that Shinkai adds to the body swapping concept make this tired idea seem fresh and new and that makes it more interesting in my opinion.
There are a few things that I really didn't like about the film the first of which being the fact that the film's pacing is far to fast if any animated film should be closer to two hours then this is it simply because it has a story and characters that demand that long of a running time. The other thing being the love story between the two characters which I personally felt was a bit forced since it comes out of nowhere and it doesn't really effect the overall plot of the film it's just there for reasons which isn't good enough at all.
Let's take a second to talk about the characters in the film because honestly I don't think anyone has talked about them but I could be wrong. First of we have Taki who to me it just your typical teenage boy he's struggling in school and at work and he lives I assume with his father but the issue is he as a character doesn't grow how the character starts the film is how he ends the film there's no growth in the character at all.
Sadly the same can also be said for Mitsuha who is the complete opposite of Taki in every single way and she wants to go and live in Tokyo and while we do see her live out that dream at the end of the film. Like Taki she has no character development and so to see her moving there really comes out of nowhere because it seems like it's out of character for her to do that since there's been no development for her character which is a shame because these are the characters that we spend the most time with and yet the film doesn't give them any character development.
Overall does this film deserve all of the love that it gets absolutely it does but that doesn't mean that it's a perfect film. In fact in my opinion it's far from being perfect don't get me wrong it's still a really good film but the issues that I mentioned are issues that could have been fixed if more time was spent on the script and even Makoto Shinkai himself admitted that the film could have used an extra year or two to get things right and I honestly think that the film could have done with that extra but since it didn't the film gets an 8.5 out of 10 from me.
The images used in this film were gathered from the Your Name fandom wiki page , the Weathering With You fandom wiki page and the Your Name Dubbed fandom wiki page. All of these images are really high quality or as high quality as I could find as such I do recommend that you use any of these fandom pages since the images are high quality and if you don't use them well i'll make sure you swap bodies with a random attractive girl or guy.
