Star Trek Beyond Review
Film fans it's been about a year since I last reviewed a Star Trek movie and well with the world in the state that it's in I figure well might as well do another one but which one tho there's the sequel that's mostly set on earth for some reason and has the crew battling someone who's basically immortal or there's the one set on an earth like space station and has the crew battling someone who's basically immortal. All joking aside I went with this one because I do believe it's the more fun sequel which for me makes the movie more enjoyable and so here is my review of "Star Trek Beyond" enjoy film and Star Trek fans alike.
The plot of the movie is three years into there deep space mission the crew of the Enterprise go to a newly built starbase called Yorktown to get some supplies and take shore leave while there they find a distress call from another ship and since there the only one's with the navigation technology needed to rescue the ship they go but there attacked by something small and robotic and the ship breaks apart and to cut a long story short they need to find out why they were attacked , who attacked them and what they want. Yeah that summary is a lot longer then I thought it was going to be and this is me condensing the plot , as for what about the story it was nice to see a Star Trek film in this new timeline not take place on earth and the story was rather well told in my humble opinion.
Reprising their roles from the previous films are of course Chris Pine as Captain James T. Kirk , Zachary Quinto as Commander Spock , Karl Urban as Lieutenant Commander Leonard McCoy , Zoe Saldana as Lieutenant Nyota Uhura , this films co-writer Simon Pegg as Lieutenant Commander Montgomery Scott , John Cho as Lieutenant Hikaru Sulu , the late Anton Yelchin as Ensign Pavel Chekov and Deep Roy as Keenser.
Joining them in this film is Idris Elba as Captain Balthazar Edison / Krall , Sofia Boutella as Jaylah , Joe Taslim as Anderson Le / Manas , Lydia Wilson as Jessica Wolff / Kalara , Melissa Roxburgh as Ensign Syl , Shohreh Aghdashloo as Commodore Paris and Greg Grunberg as Commander Finnegan. The acting in the film from both the returning and the new cast I thought was very cast I really cannot think of a single bad actor in this film since they all bring there a-game to this movie which given the iconic status of this franchise is a really good thing in my own humble opinion.
Let us take a second to talk about the new characters in the film starting with Jaylah as played by Sofia Boutella. Out of the new characters I personally found her to be one of the better ones simply because she has an actual character arc which alot of them don't she starts the film just wanting to run away and hide from her problems but over the course of the film she learns that running away won't solve her problems only solving them will as such she grows as a character.
Now is as good as any to talk about the villain of the film Balthazar Edison / Krall as played by all round cool dude Idris Elba. I personally found his character to be very boring just because it's the same motivation that we've seen done a hundred times before in hundred better movies and for those that don't know he wants revenge on the federation for them leaving him to die. We've seen this motivation done better in other movies and so I just wish that they gave him a new and better motivation because Star Trek built on new ideas so it would not only make sense but would also be very fitting as well.
This is the first film in this new rebooted timeline to not be directed by J. J. Abrams as he was busy directing a small little known film known as Star Wars: The Force Awakens I doubt any of you have heard of it it's a little known film. So directing duties this time went to Fast & Furious director Justin Lin and you can just tell that the franchise is in my opinion in better hands with Justin because he made the film fun which is what a movie should be.
Don't get me wrong the first two films had there moments but they were also very dull and boring in parts so while they may have made great episodes of any Star Trek show they don't make great movies. A movie even one set in the world of Star Trek needs to at least be entertaining since you have to appeal to larger auidence since not everyone has seen episodes of the original series and so while the first two movies might be more in line with the what original series pacing would have been like this one feels more like a movie.
Doing the CGI for the film was Atomic Fiction, DNEG and Kelvin Optical don't worry if you haven't heard of any of these companies I haven't either. For me the effects in this company are a huge step down fro the effects of the previous two films which might be because they didn't have Industrial Light & Magic working on the film since they were working on The Force Awakens and because of that the effects don't really look as good as they in the other two movies.
The film also looks like it was very cheaply made which is something that you never ever want especially if your film cost $185 million American dollars to make. When the crew crash lands on the jungle planet (it most likely has a name I just can't remember it) the film goes from looking like an actual film to looking like a cheaply made episode of The CW's The 100 which is already a cheaply made show there's nothing about those scenes that make it look like a movie to me even when the film throws in a bunch of CGI it still looks cheap infact the CGI in those scenes make it look even cheaper since it's just hiding cuts and nothing more.
Since this is of course an action movie that does mean that we have to talk about the action that's in the film. In my opinion the action in this film is honestly really fun I honestly had a good time whenever an action scene started because of how creative they were and the fact that having an action scene set in the jungle just means that you can get more creative and they take as much advantage of that jungle setting as they possibly could do.
Overall I honestly think that while this film does have alot of issues it's one of the better films in this new timeline. However like I said the film does have alot of issues all of which i've managed to bring up in this review plus the fact the story has alot going on which really isn't needed when you stop and think about it but it is still a really fun film to watch and I can't believe that this film didn't do that well at the box office only making $343.5 million US dollars when the previous two films made $467.4 million (Star Trek Intro Darkness) and $385.7 million (Star Trek 2009) even so this film gets a 7.5 out of 10 from me.
