Paddington Film Review
British film fans i've seen alot of films made in the UK and for a UK audience but two of the films i've not seen are the Paddington films. Well that has now changed since i've now finally seen the first Paddington film (it only took me five years to finally watch it) and I do plan on seeing the second film as well but I chose this not only because i've not seen it but also because there's a new Paddington series airing a sneak peak in a few days and I want to have some idea of what i'm talking about and so here is my review of the 2014 film Paddington enjoy.
The plot of the film is Paddington is a bear from the deepest Peru and when his home is destroyed his Aunt Lucy sends him to London and while there he attracts the attention of Millicent Clyde who want's Paddington for her own nefarious reason. The plot is honestly rather simple and I think that works for this character and it was honestly rather well paced which is something that I honestly wasn't expecting and was very refreshing.
Starring in the film is Ben Whishaw as Paddington Bear , Imelda Staunton as Aunt Lucy , Michael Gambon as Uncle Pastuzo , Hugh Bonneville as Henry Brown , Sally Hawkins as Mary Brown , Madeleine Harris as Judy Brown , Samuel Joslin as Jonathan Brown , Julie Walters as Mrs. Bird , Nicole Kidman as Millicent Clyde , Jim Broadbent as Samuel Gruber and The Twelfth Doctor Himself Peter Capaldi as Mr. Curry.
I honestly had no idea what top expect when it comes to the acting I knew that there was some big names in the film and so the I knew going in to the film that the quality of the acting was going to be rather high. However i wasn't prepared for it to be as good as it was all of the actors in this film many of whom are Paddington fans really brought there a-game to this movie and it really does indeed show.
The CGI for the film was handled by Framestore who have worked on quite alot of popular films all of which feature great looking CGI. So then it shouldn't really shock you to learn that the CGI in this film is honestly freaking good perhaps the best looking CGI is in the bathtub scene where there is fully CGI water , bathtub and Paddington and it all looks so real which as anyone will tell you making water look and move realistically is always a hard task and so when you also add in two moving objects as well as a real life actor it's great that the CGI in that scene turned out as great as it did.
The best thing that I think anyone can say about this film is that it's nice it's a nice film to sit down and watch be it by yourself or with friends or family. I know that i've you've seen some of my reviews you'll know that i've said a film is nice alot recently and that's because it's honestly true and there's nothing wrong with a film just being nice infact given the time of year being nice is a great thing to be.
Now incase there are some of you out there who haven't heard of the Paddington character he first appeared in the book "A Bear Called Paddington" by author Michael Bond. The character has appeared in a total of twenty seven books with the latest one being released last year and it called "Paddington at St. Paul's" so to say that the character is a legend would be a huge freaking understatement.
The character is also a British institution with him appearing in quite alot of animated shows all throughout the years as well as appearing in a Children In Need video in 2009. So it should come as now shock to anyone that alot of the adult cast of this film were fans of the character and I think it's that love for the character which not only made the actors bring there a-game but everyone involved since they didn't want to do make a bad film featuring a character that was a huge part of there childhoods.
The only real negative thing I have to say about the film is that the villain isn't really developed that well. Yes I am fine with them having a villain since she works well for the story but I feel that they could have done a better job making her feel more like a three dimensional character instead all we get is a typical villain who could have been in any movie but tho to have only one flaw is in my opinion a great thing since everything else is so good.
This film is also really charming I can't remember a film that had alot of charm in it and yet this film has it in spades. Everything about this film is charming from the way the family interact not only with each other but also with Paddington himself to their next neighbour there's alot of charm to be found in this film and it was something that I not only enjoyed alot but found to be rather refreshing as well.
Now then since this is a comedy that does mean that we have to talk about the jokes that are present in the film and like alot of things in the film the jokes really do work. I cannot count the amount of times that I laughed at a joke in this film because there's so many and it happend alot of the time hell I can't even tell you what my favourite joke was altho I will say that there's a joke with Paddington dressed as a policeman which is pretty funny and cute at the same time.
Overall this really is a nice film and altho alot of people really did hype up both this film and the second one alot. I still feel that this is a film worth watching and is not only worthy of the name Paddington but also deserves all of the praise that it got not only from critics but from fans of the Paddington character as well and for once I don't find that many flaws and so it gets a rare 10 out of 10 from me.
