X-Men: Dark Phoenix SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Review

X-Men fans the X-Men film series has been going on for close to twenty years now and is due to end with the ever delayed The New Mutants. This film will be the last X-Men film to feature the current cast tho and so you'd think that i'd be excited for this film given that I was raised on this franchise but oddly enough I wasn't in fact I was in different to the film and so here is my SPOILERS review of X-Men: Dark Phoenix because yes i'm calling it that because that's what it was released as in the UK and is overall the better title.

The plot what little of it there is is Jean Grey is hit by solar flairs during a mission and that awakens something dark inside of her and the X-Men have to find a way to stop both it and her. Oh boy do I have issues with what happens in the story but i'm going to go into that later , this movie is just under two hours and that means all we get is alot of rushed plot points which for a story this iconic is not what you want at all I don't know why Fox thought this was a good idea and because of the short run time what little plot there actually does suffer badly for it.

Starring in the film are James McAvoy as Charles Xavier / Professor X , Michael Fassbender as Erik Lehnsherr / Magneto , Jennifer Lawrence as Raven Darkhölme / Mystique , Nicholas Hoult as Hank McCoy / Beast , Game Of Thrones Spoiler as Jean Grey / Dark Phoenix , Tye Sheridan as Scott Summers / Cyclops , Alexandra Shipp as Ororo Munroe / Storm , Kodi Smit-McPhee as Kurt Wagner / Nightcrawler , Evan Peters as Peter Maximoff / Quicksilver and Jessica Chastain as Vuk.

In terms of the acting thew film does fair a little better but given how bad the script for the film is there's only so much the actors can do. I will say that the film does indeed deserve praise of the actors performances since I do believe all of the actors in this film are trying but as I just said there let down by a bad script and bad acting. I honestly do feel that if the film had a better script in place then everything else would have been better.

We have to talk about the X-Women scene because that line of dialog is just so freaking bad and you can just see from the looks on the actors faces that they really didn't want to say those lines. I have no idea who thought of that line but it's clear to me that the only reason this line existed was so that Fox could then pander to the SJW crowd because that line has no baring on the overall film heck it's not even brought up again.

I don't know why but the X-Men film franchise really does like not producing a good film when it comes to this story and that's a shame because this could so easily make a good film. Even during this movie I came up with a way to do just that and it's so freaking simple instead of having it just be one film you have it be two films and make each film two and a half hours. You have part one tell the first part of the phoenix saga and then part two deals with the second half of it I can't believe that no one has thought of telling this saga this way before.

Now then the X-Men film series has been one linear path at least story wise so when a character is dead they stayed dead. This film took that linear story telling and threw it right out the window by killing of a character we know for sure is alive and well in the original movie and that character is Mystique and if i'm being honest that was the point in the film where the film lost me because while it was bad it was least entertainingly bad but now they've gone and messed up the whole timeline and yeah this is what happens in the story.

Also not really adding up when you think about is the fact that Magneto isn't even close to looking like Sir Ian McKellen. That is something that I can forgive since it's only a minor thing but it's something that I can see bugging some people since in every Star Wars prequel we saw Ewan McGregor start to look more and more like Alec Guinness so why they didn't do it in this film to me makes no sense what so ever.

The entire third act of this film was re-shot and it really does show like really freaking bad because the X-men go from hating Jean to liking her again so freaking quickly. I will say that after seeing this film I do want to see what the original third act was just because it can't be as bad as the film it self and i'm sure it actually makes the film better but unfortunately it doesn't look like we're going to be seeing it any time soon or at least not in full.

Like The New Mutants this film also had it's release date pushed back quite a few times and for me that squashed what little excitement I had for the film. In all honesty when the film was first announced I was kind of excited for the film because the only other version of this story was the dreadful X-Men: The Last Stand but after seeing it get pushed back again and again it just got to the point where I just wanted it out so we could stop talking about it.

The effects in the film aren't that bad but at the same time there not that good and the effects were done by a bunch of different companies far two many to name. In my opinion the effects in the film were one of the best things in the film but given how I feel about the film the fact that the effects are one of the best things in it isn't really something to be proud of at least in my opinion but that's just me.

Like I said before this is the final film to feature the current X-Men cast and in some ways this does feel like a finale but it doesn't in others. It does nothing to get the characters were they are in the first film at all and I get that there was meant to be a new series of films spawning from this that would feature younger versions of X-Men characters weather or not that would have been in the same continuity is anyone's guess but it does do a good job of ending some characters in a place that feels right for there characters.

Since this is a superhero movie that means we have to talk about the action that's in the movie and like the effects the action is pretty good but it could have been better. The action really does suffer due to the time constraints because of the short run time we have to get to the next plot point and that means we don't get as much action as i'd have liked or even come to expect from this series but when it's good it's really good.

I actually forgot to mention this but for some reason even tho there villains in the original film in this film Magneto and Mystique are straight up good guys. That was fine for X-Men: Days Of Future Past but the fact that they made them straight forward good guys in this movie is to me totally against both of there characters and it's obvious why they did it it's because both of the actors playing them are big names and that's it.

Overall this is a pretty bad film and it's a bad final film for this cast but at the same time there is some good things to be found you just have to go throw alot of bad things to get to it and so this film gets 2 out of 10 from me.
