In This Corner Of The World Dubbed Review
Anime fans as you'll know i've spent the last few days re-reviewing some truly great anime movies and well here we are again. This is a movie that honestly truly touches me every time I see it , it's also a movie that I was dying to see from the second the first teaser dropped there's really no way I can introduce this film because what ever I say won't do the film any kind of justice so here is my review of In This Corner Of The World.
Now usually i'd give a film alot of hate for not having any kind of plot but honestly in this film it works. It works because this film isn't about the plot it's about the people and this film is to me as close to real life as you could get and real life doesn't have a plot. What drags this film down in my opinion is the run time it's nearly two and a half hours and that makes this film hard to get through at some points.
As with the previous two anime reviews i've done i'm basing this review of the dubbed version of the movie. So starring in the movie is Laura Post as Suzu , Barbara Goodson as San , Christine Marie Cabanos as Sumi , Kenna Pickard as Harumi , Kira Buckland as Keiko , Kirk Thornton as Entarou , Michael Chapman as Tetsu and Todd Haberkorn as Shusaku. I've done a bit of digging around and there's a few well done anime dub actors doing additional voices in this movie with the likes of Cristina Vee , Bryce Papenbrook and Cherami Leigh all supplying voices for the movie.
I don't really think that this needs to be said but the acting in the film is truly top notch and I mean this is OSCAR quality acting and that's something I never say in an anime film. I can't really imagine that this film was easy for the cast to make because of the difficult subject matter but the cast really do bring there A game for this movie and it really does show because alot of these actors never give this high quality of a performance.
The film was animated by MAPPA who outside of this film really haven't worked on anything of note and that really is a shame because the animation in this film is truly beautiful. I'd go as far to say that as far as independent anime goes this is by far the best animated one , to me this film is a work of art each frame looks stunning and more importantly each frame looks like it belongs in the era that the film is being set.
What really shocked me when doing some research for this film is that this film was entirely created thanks to crowdfunding. That to me is mind blowing and when you add in the fact that 39 million yen was raised so it's no wonder that the animation is great because it has a high budget but still I can't help but wonder why a story this good only got a film adaptation thanks to crowdfunding , it makes me wonder why this had to be the case because it's something that belongs on the big screen.
It's not al sun shine and roses tho since this film has a shockingly large run time of nearly two and a half hours. Which I believe makes this one of the longest running anime films of all time but I can't say for sure and if that is the case then well done this film for breaking new ground but Japan please don't make a film that long ever again and if you do please make sure the story your telling requires that long of a run time in my opinion you could have told this story in an hour and forty minuets.
That said tho I can see why they went with a longer running time because if they didn't the emotional moments just wouldn't quite hit the mark like they do now. However it's pointless in having those scenes if your audience is begging you to hurry the hell up so they were forced into making a tough choice and it's not one that everyone is going to agree with , heck I bet that some of you prefer the longer running time but I personally don't.
I have to take a minuet here to talk about the main character Suzu for the vast majority of the movie we see her as this positive person who's just trying to do the best she can with what life has thrown at her. During the cause of the movie tho we slowly see that positivity go away as the second world war continues. To me that makes her a truly interesting character because she's more real and the fact is if any of us were alive and in the same situation she's in we'd be a lot less positive.
Now incase your wondering yes I do own the DVD /Blu-Ray of this movie however i'm choosing not to watch the DVD /Blu-Ray. I'm doing that because of the fact that it's hard as hell to watch the dubbed version of the movie , most normal anime films or TV shows when released on DVD in an English speaking country would automatically have the dubbed version play whenever you press play not this film this film has the subbed version play automatically so you have to go into the main menu and hand select the dubbed audio, it's not over there tho because of the fact even when you select the English audio you then have to manually turn the subtitles of and that can be annoying when all you want to do is watch a freaking movie.
If your thinking of seeing this movie then I should let you know that you need to bring a box tissues with you because if it wasn't obvious enough by the fact that I mentioned that this film takes place during the second world war the main character Suzu is from Hiroshima. So if your a history buff you'll know that something terrible happens to that town and yes it does effect our main character but that's not the only hardship that she goes through in this film.
To me it's great that there's alot hardship in this film because that's life regardless of if your in a war or not. There's always going to be hardship just like there's always going to be lighthearted moments and I love that both of those are represented in this film. The best thing I can say about this film is that it's real life and I know that's going to put alot of people of but to me that's not only a good thing but a great thing.
Overall this is such a good film and even a few days ago I wouldn't have said that this is better then A Silent Voice and I still say that that movie is better in a lot ways now tho i'd say there about equal and because of that it's getting the exact same score a 9 out of 10. Incase you guys didn't know there will be an extended version of the movie coming out on December 20th 2019 so expect a subbed version of the movie out some time in 2020 , this new version will include thirty minuets of extra footage and more characters and the title of the film is In This Corner (and Other Corners) of the World.
